Bergen is an iconic travel destination, dear reader. The city is one of those rare places on Earth where one feels overwhelmed by a feeling of euphoria for just having arrived here. Famed as the gateway to Fjordland Norway, the city itself is surrounded by seven fjords and seven hills, and I'm sure if you look hard enough you'll even discover seven Norwegian trolls! Swarming with tourists during the Scandinavian summer season, who would miss the opportunity to head west to Bergen? To recap briefly, I took the train from Oslo for an extremely pleasant nine hour commute heading west through magnificent scenery. As the journey progressed the scenery keep getting better. A little tip is to take the first train leaving at the crack of dawn, and only pay half the standard fare for the ... read more

We headed back from Bergen on July 25th. Pooped from the night before but we got to sleep in a little to make up for it. We had until about 3 to be tourists. Our most important thing for Bergen was to take a trip up the side of the mountain in the Floybanen. It's a tram similar to the Niagara Falls one. So for anyone who knows that I'm afraid of heights, I've now gone to the 2nd level of the Eiffel Tower and up the Floybanen. There are picture to prove it! Bergen is a beautiful place on the west coast of Norway and sits on a fjord. Let's face it, many places in Norway sit on a fjord. But this one has the hustle and bustle of a city with a small-town feel. ... read more

Hallo....

Woke late (can’t get off to sleep as it is so light at night!) and walked across the bridge into Bergen. This involves going up and over quite a hill as this city is only flat along the waterways. Saw some amazing boats in the harbour - one from the Isle of Man which is privately owned (we chatted to one of the crew). Can’t imagine how much money you would need to have to own something like that. Had a good wander round Bergen, mainly down in the Bryggen area which is the old, traditional wooden fishing area and what Bergen is famous for. Has had a lot of damage from fires and is now heavily protected as a Unesco heritage site. Lovely place to explore and the frontage onto the harbour is very pretty ... read more

Very early start today as a long way to travel and we knew our route involved at least one ferry. Within 5 minutes of leaving the campsite we were climbing up up and away. Spotted the Heavy Water factory when we were part way up our first mountain. It was perched on the other side of the ravine - a building of quite beautiful design and proportion. Our 200 mile drive across to the west coast was spectacular. At the end of it we had concluded that the Norwegians are like moles, and wet ones at that. They must spend half their time on water and the other half underground in tunnels. Never seen so much water anywhere (and we have been to quite a few watery places). Fjord after fjord, each one more beautiful than ... read more

Well. That was certainly an adventure. My journey from Bergen to Lillehammer (via Oslo) was supposed to take 11hrs. Note the “supposed to” haha. Things started off innocently enough - when I grabbed my bag and left the hostel the girl working there warned me that NSB (the train company) had some electrical problems, so the trains might be slightly delayed. I’m like ok cool, thanks for letting me know. I then laughed - I waited all day for this train, what’s another hour or so? Silly me, thinking it would only be an hour. I got to the station and my train was already there - at this point it was 10:15pm and the departure board had us listed at leaving at 10:58pm - right on time. I smiled - there we go, no delays! ... read more

Well, the rain finally caught up with me in Norway… It was very overcast when I left the hostel, so I made a bee-line for the Fløibanen to go up the mountain to try and beat the rain. Apparently half the tourists in Bergen had the same idea because the line was quite gross lol. The view was amazing from atop the mountain - well worth the wait. Would’ve been slightly nicer on a sunny day - the colour of all the houses would’ve popped more - but nevertheless, a great view. You could see the entire city, the harbour and the mountains in the distance. I got some nice shots although I’ve come to the conclusion many tourists don’t know how to take good photos… ahem. I shouldn’t complain though - at least they’re nice ... read more

So, last night was the first time I made use of my sleeping mask - the curtains here are pretty weak, and considering it barely gets dark out… yeah, I used my fashionable mask. I originally planned on going to the science/tech museum, but by the time I found my way down there - and saw the bus load of kids arriving - I decided I’d rather walk around Nygardsparken, the lovely city park beside it. Apparently it’s a local favourite for enjoying the sun - I decided to join in this experience. I plopped myself down in the middle of a grassy hill and spent 3-hrs reading, people-watching and doing some sudoku puzzles. Love it. I wandered back into town after that - I would’ve stayed longer but didn’t want a sunburn thanks… On the ... read more

Side note first. Looks like my pictures didnt load too well for the published thing, so just click on one and you can get to them easily. The train ride from Oslo to Bergen is nothing short of stunning. From the deepest green trees up to the highest glacier in Europe it is really really really good looking. Like a faceless infinitely headed serpent however, the lightless entity we had pitted ourselves against sent one of its most powerful minions against us! He took the form of a man, though was unable to fully disguise the filth lurking within. We took warey note of thick oil pasting his shoulder length hair to his neck and the arrogant sneer twisting his mouth. We had no chance. I can only assume this minion of the evil was not ... read more
