After several months with no travel, it was great to get away again - this time to the scenic North Island of New Zealand. The purpose of our trip was a new year's eve beach wedding at Paraparaumu Beach, which was a great evening even though the weather forced a change of plans. We landed in Wellington on a miserable day and drove the scenic route around the bay through the small harbour city. We didn't see much worth stopping for in Wellington, so went straight up to the sleepy seaside town of Paraparaumu and checked into our nearby accommodation at Raumati Beach. The wedding was at Nga Manu Nature Reserve in the nearby town of Waikanae. The nature reserve is on a very picturesque 13 hectares and was full of diverse flora and fauna. We ... read more

Seven nights on Waikiki beach was the ideal way to wind down our five week holiday. There is always plenty going on at Waikiki and we loved every minute of our time here. Our first day we decided to go check out a Luau. We went to Germaine's Luau, which is on the west coast of Oahu at an idyllic beach location. The weather, as it was every day we were in Oahu, was just perfect! It is about an hour drive out to the Luau, and our tour guide Matt was incredibly funny trying to get everyone in the mood to party. However, he wasn't having much luck because our bus seemed to be full of grumpy old Americans who for some reason were all a bit miserable. One guy even put his fingers in ... read more

The Big Island of Hawai'i is certainly one of the most geologically interesting places I have been in the world. From the moment we picked up the car from Kona airport and started driving the 110 miles to the town of Volcano (not a very creative town name!), where we were staying for the first two days of our stay on the big Island, we realised this was no ordinary landscape. The drive from the airport goes through some tropical jungle and amazing beaches along the coast, which then suddenly becomes completely dry, dead, barren land and then becomes mountainous and rocky. We also encountered fierce stormy weather and blazing sunshine during the 3 hour drive. This island was completely schitzophrenic! Our lodge in Volcano was a supurb tropical retreat, and the owners prepared us an ... read more

We arrived in Seattle and headed straight to the nearby Pike Place Markets, a labrynth of difference levels of markets culminating in a huge fish market at the top. The shops in the lower part of the market were mostly arty types and I really liked the ones with the old posters and magazines. Next to the market is also a chewing gum wall, where people just put their chewing gum on the wall, just for fun, and now it is completely covered in gum. Rather disgusting, but in some way art. Only in Seattle could they pull this off as art! The next morning we headed straight to the Space Needle to get the overall view of the sprawling city that is built around Lake Union. At the top of the Space Needle we learn ... read more

We loved our visit to Vancouver, a city that is surrounded by water, temperate rainforest and an abundance of outdoor activities. We were very fortunate to stay with friends who lived downtown and got a bit of an inside tour of the area including some great local bars. We walked around town, checking out the various neighbourhoods as well as spotting a few film productions going on. Vancouver is actually the 3rd largest film production centre in North America after LA and NY. We headed off to Granville Island, actually a peninsula south of downtown that used to be an industrial manufacturing area, but is now converted to a huge market area selling mostly food (including seafood straight off the boat) as well as containing the microbrewery Granville Island Brewery and also has a million boats ... read more

We enjoyed a brief visit to Toronto, the largest city in Canada on the impressive Lake Ontario. Luckily for us, we stayed with our friends who have an awesome top floor condo in downtown Toronto. Downtown Toronto has heaps of great modern condo buildings and an impressive skyline with the CN Tower standing out amongst the buildings. We didn't come to Toronto to do the touristy things, but wandered around the harbour area and checked out a few of the notable buildings and the shops. I also went for a run which enabled me to check out some of the nice park areas around Downtown. Toronto actually reminds me of Australian cities in many ways. It isn't a really touristy place, but is easy to get around and has plenty to do. The highlight of the ... read more

We really enjoyed our all too brief trip to Montreal, a city that seems to suffer from an identity crisis but is a great city to visit with beautiful natural features, a fascinating history and a vibrant population. I started the morning in a very healthy way, going for a 10km run, the first half of which was along the picturesque McGill University, where all of the staff were on strike and protesting, and then up the very steep Mont Royal, a huge park on the hill that overlooks the city. The views from the top were fantastic on this very sunny morning so I stopped for a break and then ran back down the hill which was much easier! There were so many people out running, riding and even doing some weird sort of cross ... read more

There is no doubting that being in New York makes you feel more alive. This was my 3rd visit to the Big Apple, but the second I step off the train in Manhattan it still puts my senses into a trance – everything moves so fast, the neon lights are so bright, the traffic and people on the streets are so loud. It must be the most alive city in the World. We stay at a hotel just opposite Penn Station – an ideal location to hit everything in central Manhattan, and as we check in there is a barrage of information hitting you on the screens above the reception desk. One screen shows baseball scores, another has the weather, another has CNN headlines and along the bottom scrolls stock prices. In the elevator is a ... read more

We had another free day in Split after our Bosnian day trip, which we used to check out the incredible old town dominated by Diocletion’s Palace– one of the world’s most impressive Roman monuments. Diocletrion was a 3rd century AD Roman Emperor who decided to retire to Split. I can understand why, it’s a beautiful harbour town and combined with the fact that it had sulphur deposits. The palace itself is a huge area taking up several blocks from the harbour. We kicked off the morning by climbing the Bell Tower, which was a very narrow steep staircase, but at the top we were rewarded with excellent 360 degree views of the city and harbour area. From there we went to Marjan Hill, a tough climb in the 30 degree plus weather but worth it once ... read more

We had an extra day in Split and thought why not do a day trip to Mostar in Bosnia & Hercegovina – a historic old town that was caught in the middle of the early 1990’s war with Croatia that saw its historic Stari Most (old bridge in English) destroyed. However from 1998 to 2004, the locals recovered the bridge rubble from the river below and rebuilt the magnificent bridge. The town is now a living triumph of peace in the region, with the city containing approximately 50% Bosnian muslims and 50% Christians, meaning it is scattered with a mix of impressive mosques and churches. It is in the Hercegovina region of Bosnia & Hercegovina, our guide informs us that there are clear borders between the two regions, but believes that they would never be allowed ... read more
