After a month without my MacAir I am now back on line. We are in Norway at present and the computer has just been returned to me. Disapointed that it stopped, but I will try to feed through a general report of what has been happening over the last month. I also have been able to download thousands of photos onto the computer, so I will get some of these onto the blog as well. Hope that everything is of interest. The last blog was from Durbrovnik and the boat was in the water, ready to go. We sailed from there for about 7 hours down to Montenegro, were we intended to stay for a couple of days. We sailed around the whole area and finally settled for the night in a bay with a few ... read more

Bergen to Kirkenes - the half part of our cruise with Hurtigruten Thursday 31st May 2012 Fred and Lorraine left a little earlier than us as they wanted to take the funicular up Mt Floyen and we hadn't made up our minds on where we wanted to go. We walked around the old buildings near the YMCA and then came across the entrance of the funicular train, a long line of people waiting. Rags hates waiting in queues so we decided to walk up to the peak using the paths, stairs and roadway shown on our map. It was only 320m above sea level but the zig-zag course made it well over an hour before we finally reached the summit. Both of us were pleased with ourselves, even if we were warm and a little footsore, ... read more

The idea of an 'hermit holiday' is for a group of friends to meet at an airport on a Friday evening, knowing that they will be flying somewhere for the weekend without knowing where exactly they are flying to. Another friend not travelling that weekend would have bought flights for each person, with each flight going to a different destination. The participants only find out where they are going, once they get to the airport. Everyone flying is then required take a video camera with them to record their experience. As regular readers of this blog will know, I have lied about my next blog being from Norway not just once, but twice. Sag and I were meant to travel to Bergen all the way back in March, but was post... read more

The aim of this trip was to see as much of western Norway in one weekend. As our time in London is coming to an end, we have been trying to get to places that we won't be able to get to on our planned road trip for next year, while still earning as much as we can- hence the Friday night after work flight. We chose to head to Bergen on the west coast as we had heard it was one of the most picturesque Scandinavian towns- thankfully it didn't disappoint. Friday was a write off, as we didn't arrive at our hostel until midnight. We went to bed hoping for no rain for our Norway in a nutshell tour the next day. Saturday brought clear skies so we excitedly headed to the train station ... read more

Today we did a massive hike (approx 15kms) from Mount Ulriken to Mount Foyen which surround Bergen to the East. It was hard going, up and down and around other mountains, on rocky and muddy terrain. But the views were spectacular and it was a good way to spend the day - being a Saturday there were heaps of locals also doing the walk - some hiking like us, but other were running and some mountain biking (don't know how on earth they would have got up and down some of the tracks - we had to climb like monkeys up and down the mountain face in some parts!). At the top of Mount Ulriken there was a fantastic view of the whole area and the surrounding islands, but best of all (as it was a ... read more

Norway is a land of extremes - extreme weather, extreme wealth (and therefore costs) and extreme landscapes. And extreme beauty of course! Bergen is a lovely town - the old town area (Bryggen) has charm and it has the similarily safe and clean feeling of Munich. It actually feels a little like a mixture of Hobart (because of the layout with the wharf and fishing culture) and Queenstown (because of the way the town creaps up the surrounding mountains - and the beautiful scenery in general!) Seeing as these two towns are a couple of our favourites - its safe to say Bergen really countn't go wrong! Our visit started on a very good note - we caught the airport shuttle bus to Bryggen (the last stop) and as we got off (in the rain) we ... read more

You know the guy who said the best laid plans of mice and men etc. That was today’s adventure. Plan A booked and PAID FOR was ship docked at 7:00, off the ship at 7:30, taxi to RR Station and pick up tickets by 8:10, train at 8:40, bus, boat ride to FLAM, steam train to Myrdal, train back to Bergen. Day dawned with brilliant blue sky and found out that the ship would not arrive until 8:00. OK, a bit tight but was assured that there would be plenty of taxis available. There were about 12 of us doing one or another version of the trip but we all had to catch the 8:40 train. Roy, Donna and I were first in line to disembark but …….. There were no taxis on the pier. We ... read more

Nic zajimaveho nas neceka, jen baleni, cesta do Bergenu a let zpet. Vstavame pozdeji. Zabere nam to nejakou chvili. Navic pruvodce slibuje ... read more

Ja ... read more
