Yesterday, we took a drive to Kaikoura - famous for whale watching. Unfortunately it was a grey and windy day, so we were satisfied with viewing some seals up close and having a yummy pub meal. On a clear warm day it would be a beautiful area, a lovely coastal town with mountains close by. This morning, we visited the resident pets at the B&B - some Alpacas and miniature horses. Milly the Alpaca is very friendly and greets you with a kiss. Unfortunately she got a bit spooked by the male in the herd and ended up spitting in my face! But she is still very cute... Then we headed back to Picton for a spot of shopping - they have quite a number of nice gift type shops featuring locally made products. In the ... read more

Today we went on a Bubbly Grape full day wine tour of the Marlborough region - we went to 6 wineries (Cloudy Bay, Saint Clair, Withers Hill, Villa Maria, Bouldevines and Bladen) and the boutique chocolate factory, along with a delicious lunch platter... We were pleasantly surprised with the variety of the wines - this region certainly doesn't only do Sauvignon Blancs! We had some really nice Pinot Gris, Riesling, Gewurztraminer and Pinot Noir! A great day...... read more

In summary - we survived! QCT conquered by the Browns.... Day 1 15kms - Ship Cove to Furneaux Lodge Woke to bitterly cold howling winds in Picton (130 km/hr). Early start to catch water taxi - unfortunately the seas were too rough to stop at a wildlife santuary island we were meant to visit, so it was straight to Ship Cove for us. The walk was enjoyable, tough uphill and steep downhill to start the day - then pretty easy after that. Some nice views of the Sounds and beautiful green rainforest. We arrived at Furneaux Lodge at around 2pm, had a hot choc and coffee on the verandah before heading to our waterfront studio to firstly stretch and then have a well deserved arvo nap! Dinner was in the lodge, 3 course meal with bottle ... read more

On Saturday afternoon we arrived in our final destination, Vienna, by train from Hallstatt. Our apartment is only three metro stops from the city centre (or approx. 15mins stroll) and we certainly saved the best accommodation til last - this place is really nice. After we arrived we went for a walk into the city to look around and came straight across the famous Stephansdom. We returned to the hotel, buying a small suitcase on the way - to keep our purchases safe on the long trip home :) On Sunday it was time for Mike's surprise activity - I had purchased tickets to the exclusive Spanish Riding School performance. And wow - it was absolutely amazing (and being a non-rider, I know I can't appreciate it nearly enough)! The riding hall is a beautiful setting ... read more

On Wednesday morning we left Berchtesgaden with beautiful blue skies (finally)! We caught a taxi to Salzburg and then two trains to get to Hallstatt, arriving at around 3pm. We caught the ferry across the Hallstatter See (lake) and arrived at our hotel. First impressions of Hallstatt were fantastic – its possibly even more beautiful than Berchtesgaden! Its even smaller and the way it clings to a tiny strip of land between the shoreline and the mountain is quite breath-taking. It has a nice village feel – our hotel is located right between the lake and the town square – perfect location. We went for a walk around the town in the arvo and then enjoyed a bottle of red on our terrace in the evening before dinner. Yesterday morning we caught a bus to the ... read more

After a champagne breakfast to start the day on a great note, we caught a local bus to one of the most popular places in Nationalpark Berchtesgaden - Konigssee (lake). The lake is 602m above sea level, 8km long, 200m deep and the most pristine lake in Germany. Its emerald green, clear waters are simply stunning. We took a ferry ride on the Konigssee to the furthest point of the lake. Here we did a hike (approx 6km return) to Lake Obersee and around its shores to a waterfall. The views were simply breathtaking - amazing alpine lakes with snow capped mountains in the background every direction you looked. After the hike we caught the ferry back to Konigssee and then caught a cable car up Mount Jenner. The cable car took us to 1800m above ... read more

On Sunday we got up just before 4am in order to catch the flybussen (airport bus) from Bryggen to the airport at 4:45am. Our Lufthansa flight departed Bergen at 7am, arriving at Frankfurt around 9am, then we had another flight to Munich, then caught the airport train to the Ostbanhauf and then another train to Berchtesgaden - finally arriving at our destination at 5pm! A long day of travelling. It was a miserable day in Berchtesgaden - very cold with unrelenting rain. After checking into the hotel (nice large room with two balconies) we went for a walk into town to find some supplies - after wandering around for about an hour in the cold rain we finally found a kebab shop that was open that we could at least buy some drinks from! Otherwise the ... read more

Today we did a massive hike (approx 15kms) from Mount Ulriken to Mount Foyen which surround Bergen to the East. It was hard going, up and down and around other mountains, on rocky and muddy terrain. But the views were spectacular and it was a good way to spend the day - being a Saturday there were heaps of locals also doing the walk - some hiking like us, but other were running and some mountain biking (don't know how on earth they would have got up and down some of the tracks - we had to climb like monkeys up and down the mountain face in some parts!). At the top of Mount Ulriken there was a fantastic view of the whole area and the surrounding islands, but best of all (as it was a ... read more

Norway is a land of extremes - extreme weather, extreme wealth (and therefore costs) and extreme landscapes. And extreme beauty of course! Bergen is a lovely town - the old town area (Bryggen) has charm and it has the similarily safe and clean feeling of Munich. It actually feels a little like a mixture of Hobart (because of the layout with the wharf and fishing culture) and Queenstown (because of the way the town creaps up the surrounding mountains - and the beautiful scenery in general!) Seeing as these two towns are a couple of our favourites - its safe to say Bergen really countn't go wrong! Our visit started on a very good note - we caught the airport shuttle bus to Bryggen (the last stop) and as we got off (in the rain) we ... read more

We've seen quite a lot since my last entry. The cruise ended on Saturday in Athens. A quick summary of our thoughts re the cruise - whilst cruising as a whole probably isn't really our thing, it was the best way for us to see Gallipoli and the Greek Islands. It was also nice to have a comfortable place to come back to - where you knew the food would be safe and you didn't have to think much! It was really nice not to have to pack our bags and lug them to an airport or train station for 7 days. The negatives - such a short time (one day) at each destination, which isn't really long enough to get a feel for the location. Also not eating the local food (which is usually a ... read more
