Bergen One The story in a peanut shell: 159km from Flaam by bus, walk to the hostel from the bus terminal, get organized in room, go out to dfind hairdresser and food, return to eat and go on Skype , go out to the movies, find my way back at the night time, find room mate, sleep well in Ikea bunk bed. Here's the whole papaya: The day began at 05:30 because I was most anxious about reaching the 09:30 bus in good time. Had packed and needed only to put away my toothbrush and the laundry hanging from the curtain rail over the heater. The tilly's underwear ARE drying overnight. At breakfast I saw the men who work all night at refurbishing the tunnel. The tunnel is closed from 21:00 till 07:00 every night till ... read more

Day Three had to be my favorite day in Bergen. It didn't start off the greatest though as bad dreams, constant snoring from the Spanish guy, and people whispering and packing up their stuff to leave early in the morning caused mine (and Destinee's sleep) to be a little interrupted. The joys of staying in a hostel though I guess!! However we were surprised to find that two of our 6 roommates were American cousins from Minnesota just enjoying a Norwegian vacation. It was nice to meet some fellow Americans. So even though it had a bit of a rocky start, we got dressed and headed off to the left side of the Vågen (Bay), destination: Akvariet i Bergen (aka the Bergen Aquarium). It wasn't too far of a walk, but a nice little jaunt as ... read more

The past week has been a bit of a blur as I set off on my first Norwegian vacation with my roommate Destinee to a city called Bergen. It started kind of badly as neither of us slept very well because there was this huge storm outside making a lot of noise. We also got up really early and thought we had to make it to our 8:00a.m. class. Luckily (as we found out via the powers of facebook), our Norwegian language class got canceled so I had more time to talk to my mom before venturing out. We headed off to get something to eat then meandered down to the train station (via the city bus) and ended up arriving about an hour and a half before we were supposed to leave. To pass the ... read more

Bergen was once the capital of Norway until someone had the wonderful idea to up and move the the production to Oslo. I´ve never seen a city with houses in the mountains until Bergen. Very beautiful. I actually thought about jumping on the overnight train back to Oslo, but settled on staying in Bergen. For three nights. The city is surrounded by seven mountains, one of which I hiked up one morning I was there. Quite amazing were all the tunnels that cut clearly through the mountains (the city is actually on on several sides of these various mountains, connected with tunnels.) On the weekends, downtown Bergen has a huge fish market. I arrived just as things were winding down, which was nice considering the amount of tourists that come through. At the market you can ... read more

The Oslo to Bergen railroad was known throughout Europe for its stunning scenery. The tracks traversed the high, mountainous plateau of central Norway where snowy peaks and glacial rivers were the norm and settlements were few and far between. My journey started in a station near Drammen. I took a seat at a north-facing window and then the train smoothly lurched and pulled out of the station. We passed through a few more stations before we started ascending into the mountains of central Norway. The rolling hills gave way to thick pine forests and then the trees gave way to the desolate beauty of the high mountains. I marveled at the snowy peaks and the expansive moraines. The train crossed several glacial rivers and I spotted several lovely waterfalls and lakes along the way. The train ... read more

Backpacking has changed now with all the hostel reservation websites. One of the great backpacking experiences is to just rock up to a hostel and find out your intended place to stay is booked out. It is then a dogfight to find any available bed in town. So when my two friends form home Jay and Kirsty asked for the authentic dribbleman backpacking experience I gave them this… We agreed to meet up in Bergen, Norway written as Europe’s wettest city, only a few years back it recorded 85 days straight rainfall. I had been here before in 2004. Back then I came here twice staying 4 days in total and not once did I see rainfall. It was one of the quick stories I’d tell a Norwegian every time I saw them on my travels. ... read more

DAY121 I have arrived in Oslo, Norway, it is 6 AM and have been on the bus all night with very little sleep. I was awake at every stop that were just in the middle of nowhere, I was waiting for a bathroom break, when on one of the stops I asked the driver and he said use the toilet on the bus. Oh for heaven's sakes! First of all I am in seat #4 up front and never has there been a toilet on a bus in all of my travels overseas. In the UK when I traveled there you were threatened with bodily harm if you ever thought of using the toilet on the bus. I wondered why others weren't complaining about toilet breaks?!? OK so it was a blonde moment. Of course everything ... read more
