We are in Athens. Great Hostel. Its fun, but loud. We saw the Acropolis today. It was free! (score) It rained. Again. Or still, depending on how you look at it. We went on a walking tour anyways. Our tour guide was kind of cute. We are tired. Thats all. --Jen... read more

So we made it from the Pantheon to the Parthenon :) We had a lot great surprises today, like a nice walking tour with some helpful information about the city as well as interesting historical tidbits--I enjoyed this more than Jen, but that's okay we both had a good time! Then we decided to just see the Acropolis today, great idea because it was free!! :) We scored big time with that! Another surprise . . . take out taste just as good as dining in but is 1/2 the price! Sweet! We love the food here . . . okay we've only tried a few things but we love the kebab/gyros they are so yummy! Baklava is good too. Not so nice surprise today . . . it rained . . . go figure. ... read more

Hello friends, Well, Mykonos was just fabulous, and it was really hard to leave! I'm in Athens now doing the sightseeing thing for a couple of days before coming home to Canada . . . yes, I'm in slight denial that this is the end of my trip, but it's definitely been more than I could have asked for. Because I'm short on time (and because I want to enjoy the super-muggy, burning hot, ever-so-polluted Athens during my short stay here), I'll update my blog properly once I get back to Canada, with pics and all! Yassas, Georgia P.S. I apologize to any of you who may catch me moving between Greek and English once I get home . . . it's been a bit of an adjustment from talking only Greek for two weeks and ... read more

I'm adding a few more notes on Athens before I leave tonight, by way of further explanation of some of the pictures I've attached. I'm sitting in Syntagma square at the moment, enjoying the wireless internet I only just today discovered. It is apparently a project of a nearby university, perhaps with the intention of getting Greeks to become more "wired." So far, though, I'm the only person I've ever seen in the square with a laptop, and for this reason I have gotten more than the usual stares. I was just thinking yesterday how it is the little things that you notice when you travel that remind you that you are in a foreign environment. And these are the things that natives don't observe at all. In Athens some of these would be the following: ... read more

I arrived in Athens a week ago on the first stop of my Backpacking the Balkans tour. I have stayed here for a week with my friend Georgia and her mother, who is a saintly spanikopita-making machine. She just laughs at us when we show up at 5AM every morning, and wakes us up at 2PM in the afternoon with the aroma of Greek (not Turkish!) coffee. Georgia is an Athens native and a fairly famous performance artist in the country, and through her circle of friends and knowledge of the city I have had many experiences I would never have had otherwise. I have tramped through the city several times over, mingling with the Anarchists in Xarchia square and the African vendors in Monistiraki by day, and then meeting up with Georgia and her ... read more

Athens, is without a doubt, a center of great historic relevance to our past and present and is def. worth the time and effort if you can make your way there. I flew into Athens for a 6 day trip and to try to get a ticket for the champions league final match between ac milan and liverpool and it was a great experince. First of all, nothing is cheap in Athens, particularly if you are from Asia and you havent realized the full impact of the Euro on your malaysian, singaporean or other asian currencies...it just cleans you out if you're not careful! Airport: a small airport that is reasonably new, built to accomodate the Olympics in 2004 and is situated some 40 minutes by metro train that provides an excellent option to get to-from ... read more

The "Party Bus" picked us up at 9 AM on Wednesday, May 30. We had a quick flight to Atanta where we boarded the plane for an 11 hour flight to Athens, Greece. It was a good flight. I stretched out in first class watching movies and finally sleeping. Athens is a busy place. There was a lot of traffic as we headed to port. The cruise ship is great! I LOVE the game room. I have been there 2 times already! Our private courtyard is nice. Mom and Roe just LOVE it. Dad and I are taking great pictures. Tomorrow we head to Katakolon, Greece. We will go exploring on our own. We will be back on the ship for BINGO!!!!! I hope I win!... read more

I left Glasgow around 3 in the afternoon which was actually quite depressing. After meeting so many amazing people, I would likely never see many of them again :(. The plane trip was relatively problem free and we ended up being seated next to a girl from Dundee who was headed to the same island as us. We arrived in Athens around 12:30 their time and realized we needed a taxi because it was too late for other means of travel. The taxi driver seemed to be quite sleezy and talked excessively with us while driving us in a huge circle around our destination. When we finally arrived the fare was 48 euros. We told the guy all we had was 40 and gave him that telling him that he cheated us. Arrived at the hostel ... read more

Today we went to Athens, Greece. About the time we reached the Acropolis a downpour began. Not just your typical shower, but more like movie rain, where it is just buckets of water. The steps were slippery, but we climbed to the top and got to see the Parthenon. We bought umbrellas from a vendor for 8 Euros each. That many umbrellas in a small space was asking for trouble. I have a few marks on the front of my face from getting pegged by the ends of other peoples umbrellas. VERY cute I must say. Our tour guide was interesting. She filled every second on the bus with talking. I think she was running out of things to say when she randomly said: 'Our bus is white." LOL! Great trip even if it was ... read more

It's been a while since the last update (sorry, been having too much fun) This was to be the last country before heading back to the UK to obtain a contract, Another Cab takes us over the border from Albania to Greece, We jump on a bus on the border and head towards the town of Ioannina. This is where we were going to grab some transport out to the monasteries of Meteora. (Mum and Dad advised us to check these out, they missed them and always regretted it.) So that’s basically how the travel plans were made, and I'm sure glad we did. We arrive in Ioannina in the morning, a bus to Meteora leaves at 3pm. We bunk down to spend a few hours before the bus leaves. Cam goes to grab the ... read more
