We slept a little bit in and was then headed out around 10 to view Athens and do our own walking tour to the Acropolis and what not. Breakfast was good as it was a pastries and coffee. yummy. We then got on the Metro and got off near the national gardens in which we cut across them to get towards the older olympic stadium. When we cut across we were lucky enough to land in front of the parliament building and watched the changing of the guard. Much like the one in London, the standing guards switch out every hour. They have a funky outfit with big furry balls on the toes of their shoes. Was cool to watch. Then we got to the old olympic stadium which was cool, then walked to the temple ... read more

When you mention to people that you are going to Greece, almost everybody has an opinion on Athens and whether it’s worth visiting. “Smoggy, dirty and crowded” are the usual adjectives people use when talking about Athens. I can’t imagine going to Greece for the first time and NOT visiting Athens. How do you land in the city and manage to avoid going to see the Acropolis, the Temple of Zeus and see the city where so much of Western Civilization started? Sure, it’s a crowded city with its share of grime, graffiti and so forth but it also how some wonderful, magical corners and experiences to be had. Since the Olympics were in Athens in 2004, there have been big changes to the infrastructure which is a huge boon to travelers. The main improvement ... read more

Well... we made it! We are alive, our bums are slightly sore (thanks Elaine for reminding us) and our feet already hurt from walking around. Here's the basic story of our flights and arrival since yesterday... Where to begin? We got on the plane, it was 30 minutes delayed from Edmonton which made it less time to wait in the Calgary airport, we essentially got on and right back on again. Thus began our looooooooong flight to Frankfurt. That was fun... and long... and... long. 9 hours later, after 3 movies, some crappy tv shows, a little sleep, and two meals (both of which were very good) we arrived in Frankfurt with time to spare. Which is good, because we had to take a TRAIN to our gate from where we landed because the airport is ... read more

Woke up pretty early and got on my flight to Athens. It was a 2 hour flight and everything went smoothly. I was meeting Alicia there as her flight was coming in a half hour after mine. After getting my bag i realized her flight is on the same baggage carousel and i waited no more then 10 minutes before meeting up. We then took the train to the metro station and got off on the stop that was noted on her directions (she got an apartment from a friend in Athens) and from there, well her directions/map well was not much more then some chicken scratch on a paper. So we walked every which way, and asked more then a half dozen people on how to find our street where the apartment was. Mind you, ... read more

Finally, getting to my Athens trip. Even if the blog is not that interesting, I think you find the pictures amazing! I have no second doubts about going to Athens, but I must say, I was a little disappointed with it. I had a great time and had perfect weather, but was surprised by how "desertist" it was. I really thought it was going to be plush and green. Now it was not as desert as Cairo, but just a lot of dust, dirt and sand. But with that said, I had a great time and really enjoyed my visit. If you just want to see Athens, four or five days is almost perfect unless you want to get into all of the facts and details. As for me, four days worked out perfectly and ... read more

Yesterday, I arrived at my hostel with no sleep and exhausted at 7:30 in the morning. So, I walked into my room and laid down on the bed to sleep. Then I thought that I would be better off if I just made myself stay up until at least early evening and get onto the right time zone/sleep schedule. So that's what I did. I headed to the Acropolis after the guy in my hostel drew the route on my map. Now I'm pretty good about navigating and figuring out where I am, but Athens was very hard for me to figure out. Partly because the streets go in on directions and partly because it's a completely different language that uses different symbols. So, I went down the wrong street a few times, but figured ... read more

I woke up feeling very disoriented and confused. Where was I? I had bouight a ticket to Corinth, whcih I had passed through briefly on my way to Naplio, and this definatly wasnt corinth. I got off the bus to have a look around and see if I could figure it out and saw my big backpack lying on the sidewalk amongst a pile of luggage that had come from the bellie of the bus. Whereever this was it was the end of the line. I strapped the green monster on my back and began the investigation. Turns out that I was in Athens, which was fine by me. I was planning on going there anyway, I was just going to take a train from corinth in an effort to savemyself a couple of bucks. ... read more

Arrived in Athens on Thursday night at about 6pm local time from Heathrow. The plane was delayed slightly, possibly due to sailors held captive in Iran returning to Heathrow airport that morning. Athens was a nice 17-degrees when we arrived. We got our airport transfer and went straight to hotel. We basically just slept until the morning because we were really buggered from all the travelling. The next morning we went on an Athens sightseeing tour. It went trough all the major tourist spots, Hadrian's Gate, Temple of Zeus and Parliament Building, then to the Acropolis. Acropolis was massive, but there were heaps of people there. Was a bit of an effort to get around to everything. We wish we'd gone back again, and we did try again the next day, but the trading hours were ... read more

We left Santorini for Athens Monday, and after a LONG metro ride later, we arrived at the hotel in the heart of the Plaka near the Acropolis. We walked around and I enjoyed my first real gyros pita in Europe (every city has their own inferior imitations and variations)! We saw some ruins, old churches and houses just walking around the city. I then really wanted to see Kallimarmaro Stadium, home of the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 and used in the 2004 Olympics for some of the events - it was built in the 4th Century B.C. for the Panathenaic Games and then restored for the modern ones! We walked to Parliament and watched the changing of the guards, done every hour here. It was quite a show, complete with the guards' cute ... read more
