Mykonos & Santorini

Looking for ideas for summer trip
14 years ago, January 21st 2010 No: 1 Msg: #100635
Me & 3 friends are going to either/both Mykonos or Santorini in August 09 for 1-2 weeks.
Has anyone got tips on how to get there from the UK? I've found cheap flights to Athens or Mykonos.
Has anyone caught the ferry to Mykonos & got somewhere to stay from people on the wharf?
Any tips for cheap travel & accomodation would be great.
thanks

Hi Mickey, Santorini and Mykonos are not cheap places but cater mostly to rich American tourists (Santorini) and party jet setters (Mykonos). Thus the room rates are very high and August is the HIGH HIGH season. Maybe camping is an alternative, although it is hot and usually windy (especially in Mykonos) during this time of the year. Why not try another island? You can do some island hopping, starting in Mykonos (1-2 days), there isn't a lot to see on the island but lot's of parying. tThen go to Paros and/or Naxos, which are more reasonably priced though it won't be cheap there either. Paros has a lot of tourism but is quite big, Naxos is less developed. Good beaches on both. There are many other popular islands in the Cyclades, you can check them out on the web, so there are other alternatives. Then you can go to Santorini and spend a couple of days, you don't really need more to see the pretty villages and the volcano. The beaches there is nothing special, hot black lavasand. I would think that anywhere you go there will be people offering accomodation upon arrival, though the week before and after 15 August is when all Greeks go to the islands, in addition to the foreigners, so the choice won't be great. Especially if you arrive on Friday or Saturday night you may not find anything at all, it has happened to me a couple of times, then you can always sleep on the beach.... Don't know of flights. there are many flights to UK from Heraklion, Crete and there is a fast catamaran connection between the two islands (2 hours), it may be a cheaper options. Reply to this
