Yasu, So I finally made it into Greece. I caught the bus in Tirana and started to head across the Albania/Greece border towards Thessaloniki. The passport control took forever and then afterwards we had to wait for the bus to get searched which took so long that I began to wonder if maybe the bus had just kept going and left all its passengers standing by the side of the road. Anyway we all piled back on the bus and were driving along and all of a sudden a few of the passengers and the bus driver started yelling at each other, and every time you'd think it was over one of them would get the final word in and the whole thing would erupt again. I of course had no idea what they were fighting ... read more

The Acropolis: Hiking Up to the Holiest Rock We are up early to make the most of our last morning in Athens. Breakfast at the hotel is pathetic, but then, nothing at the Best Western has impressed so far. We head out toward the main street that leads directly to the Acropolis, briskly walking for 20 minutes until we hit the foot of the hill. There, we wonder which way to go, as there aren’t any clear signs, and the few that do exist are covered in graffiti. On the way, we pass at least three sites with ruins encased in glass. If only we had the time to see all of Athens… Leroy approaches a waiter at a café to ask him which way the path to the Acropolis lies, but before he gets even ... read more

Milos, Mykonos, Santorini, Aegina, Patmos??? Our clock is all wrong now. We went to bed at 6am and, although Leroy gets up a little earlier, we’re not ready to face the world until about 2pm. The Acropolis closes at 7:30pm and the Best Western concierge encourages us to walk there. It’ll take an hour, he says, so we must leave enough time. But our need for a bed and our empty stomachs win over. We have to find a place to stay tomorrow night and the night after. Thursday night should not be a problem since most of the soccer fans will have left. We contemplate getting a place in Aegina, an island just 20 km away from the port of Piraeus, which is only 15 km south of Athens. But if we party for the ... read more

I was entering the previous entry and the tour bus arrived so got to end it abruptly with no pix. We went on a 2-day tour to Delphi and Meteora. So glad we took the tour instead of trying to DIY, cos the guide provided so much interesting information and it's also more convenient. The guide told us that Delphi has very good weather condition, enjoying avg 300 days of good weather per year... unfortunately, this day is one of the 65 days!! :( Slight drizzle, we can still stay outdoor but the grey sky wasn't good for pixs. It's also very windy and gets so cold. Anthony fell in love with the Greek salad, had to have one at each meal and for the first time, he's taking so much feta cheese. We did ... read more

We went to the meat market, seafood market and the veg market. Very vibrant places, and full of activities. The sellers in the meat and seafood market are mainly young guys, and pretty cute too. We took a metro to the ferry terminal. The torture then begins... we walked for half an hour with full battle order... to locate the building to collect our ferry tickets... then another long walk (1 hr) to the other side of the huge port to reach our ferry. Shawna didn't even have energy to nag.... A buckle in Wendy's backpack BROKE :o Guess the bag is too heavy..... It's going to be a 18 hrs journey to Rhodes island. Our cabin is tiny, but at least we get a bed to rest. Somehow, I was able to sleep better in ... read more

We took a tram (didn't pay because we didn't know how to) to National Archaeological Museum. Today is National Museum Day. Good news is that entrance was free!!, but bad news is, the whole place is crowded with school kids.... The Acropolis is under major restoration and plus the crowd, there's simply no way to get a decent photo of the Parthenon without scaffolding structures and people. No matter what, we've seen the REAL thing.. :)... read more

Well, we are in bustling Athens at the moment, and are about to embark on the last leg of our journey, travelling over to the Greek Isles. Chester filled you in on what we had been up to as far as Florence, so we will fill you in on what we have been up to since. We travelled from Florence to Rome via Pisa, but only due to a train-ticketting bungle where we were given a ticket for the wrong date after paying 30 euros for a booking, but we managed to jump on a couple of non-reserve trains anyway. The trip was a bit longer but definitely more scenic as we went along the west coast which went very close to the coastline. Rome was great - had a very welcoming feel, though the place ... read more

Dinner was a Greek salad and kebab which looked like 2 rolls of shit.. but tasted very good. The television in the room shows only programms in Greek, but there is one channel which is in "Universal language"... a 24/7 prono channel. We realised our hotel is in a red-light district, probably that explains why we get this kind of channel.... read more

Woke up to this whaling alarm sound - there was a bunch of ruckus outside of the hostel and I was scared they was going to be a riot in the Monastiraki (aka ghetto)... It turned off after a few minutes - we never found out what it was for. Outside it was super busy. We could tell we were in the ghet because of all the hardware stores selling chain saws. Seriously every other store was a hardware strore. The Acropolis was amazing - its still hard to believe we are in Greece!! We walked around the Plaka and realized why everyone told us to stay there!! Its a far cry from the Monastiraki - winding stone streets with cute little sidewalk cafe's everywhere. We even found a Starbucks!!! Thank God!!! I was starting ... read more
