Athens 2007 - Day 1 - The flight the bus and the boat This was the day. I got up at 5:30 and my wife drove me to the airport where I checked in for my flights which were leading me to Madrid and from there to Athens. The plane to Madrid was REALLY old and as always when you fly Iberia on domestic flights the service was below any standard. The cheapest sandwich costed 6.50 EUR. Have never seen this anywhere else. But then in the plane from Madrid to Athens I was really surprised. I had a seat at an emergency exit and the area was huge. I had a women sitting next to me but (maybe since the garlic I ate the night before…Hail garlic!!!) she changed her seat after the start ... read more

So it is a bit cliche to have a toga party in Greece but having an Animal House style party at the Pink Palace was so much fun we have hardly stopped talking about it. We were given pink satin sheets and told to make togas. This called for a lot of creativity on our parts and it kinda sucked because trying to make a sheet into a hot outfit was just not happening. Plus the things were blazing hot and made me feel like I was wearing a winter coat. We found some girls in the hall who helped us look like slutty(but respectful of course mom) ancient greecians. Dinner was frickin amazing. People complained about the food at the hostel but I devoured it. Everyone went to the bar afterwards for ouzo and ... read more

So this morning we grabbed a quick breakfast at the hotel (and of course my birthday Starbucks coffee) and headed off to the Parthenon! It's about 100 degrees here so it's VERY warm and climbing up a huge mountain ... great! Haha ignore my sarcasm -- it really was amazing. :) I forgot my camera cord in my room and don't want to lose this computer, but hopefully I will be able to upload some photos. I've taken about 133 photos so far - between the five of us I'm sure we have a ton. We then ate at Kosmikon in Plaka ... it was great! I love the food here :P We did a bit of touristy shopping -- you know, postcards, magnets, etc. We're finally back and are going to try this nap thing ... read more

Somethng has changed. Where are the endless piles of garbage, the potholes and the unfinished buildings. Of course, we're in Greece now. At the Albanian/Greek border, the Greek customs official asked if we had stopped at all in Albania. On seeing the perplexed look on his face when I told him a week, there didn't seem much point in attempting to explain him we actually enjoyed ourselves. First port of call, Monodendri, one of the numerous Zagorian villages, 1100 meters into the Pindos mountains. These stone buildings with their slate roofs are reason enough to visit this wonderful section of northern Greece. For us though, the star attraction was the Vikos Gorge. There is a sign in Monodendri claiming, "1997 Guiness Book of Records, world's deepest gorge." I don't know if this meant: a. the Guiness ... read more

If you ever want to travel to paradise, just hop on a ferry and head over to the Greek Isle Mykonos. It truly is utterly amazing there. And I really hate to be leaving it, but sadly I must. I really wish I could spend a month there, living on the beach, taking little day trips into Little Venice, and just writing, you know? Well, I boarded the hydrofoil that would take me back Piraeus. I met this really cute Japanese couple (whom I would later see back in Athens), and we shared a few stories on the way back. The rest of my time was spent drinking a really good iced coffee and then chilling out with my trustee IPod :). As soon as I was back in Piraeus, I hopped on the metro and ... read more

Well! We're here. We are currently in Athens ... we got to the hotel around 7.30, which gave us enough time to settle in our rooms, shower, and off to dinner around 10pm! Real dinner time around here. :) I don't have much else to report, seeing that we've only been here for a few hours. The hotel is really cute. Tomorrow morning we're heading out to see the Acropolis (which, btw, we have an awesome view of from bar/pool which is on the top level of our hotel). Tomorrow evening we have plans to go meet with my Yiayia's friend's family and be shown around Pireas. In other news, tomorrow is my 21st birthday! All I really want for my birthday is Starbucks, which I have yet to find here, although I do know it ... read more

lets see...last time we wrote we were in naples about to hop on a boat for a daytrip to Capri. the island was AMAZING!! such natural beauty there, and not many tourists. we spent the whole day baking ourselves on the beach next to beautiful greenish blue water. it was a good day. then we took a 16 hour ferry to greece. we have been in athens for 3 days now...and we don't want to leave. we love it more than we imagined we would. our hostel is amazing...right under the acropolis and it has a rooftop bar where we all hung out every night. we spent our first day here wondering around with a new found friend. we explored the acopolis and the little markets that surround it. this city is absolutely amazing. so ... read more

So we finally arrived back in Athens after 5 nights in the Greek Isles. The best part I mentioned before is the cheapness of the islands. These Islands are great, life is so simple and you forget that you're still in Europe. We laid on beaches day in day out and Revved up some ATV's to get around the islands. Since I left off we were in Naxos, the next island we visited was Santorini with it's famous cliffs and white buildings. It's very nice. Our first day was spent on the beach in the a small town of Perissa, it sould be also noted all the sand on Santorini is black which is kinda cool. The next day we rented ATV's for 15 Euro and headed for a drive to Red beach (which has a ... read more
