Saturday, March 31 A sleepless night followed by a long, boring day = not much to write about. There was a storm, with pouring rain and howling wind, during the night. I got up at one point to see the palm trees thrashing back and forth, just like you see on TV for hurricanes. Scary! We chowed down on the last of our cereal and milk and ended up sitting in the lobby for the rest of the afternoon with our luggage, since our flight didn't leave until late that evening. Played cards... read books... ate lunch from the grocery store... and I got addicted to the puzzle game Sodoku; reminds me of Andrea! Before it was time to leave, I went out for one last moment with the sea. I've always loved the sound of ... read more

Athens for NESA Europe » Greece » Athens By TheKeithsMarch 31st 2007Alana and Bryan Keithurl='/Videos/2962.html' onclick='dialog("/Videos/2962.html?popped=1","tbvideo",600,600);return false;'Greek DancingWe were in Athens, Greece for the 2007 NESA Spring Educator's Conference at the end of March for 3 days of workshops and special speakers. Bryan was a teacher presenter, and the school paid for our hotel stay at the Intercontinental in return. Not a bad trade - 1 hour presenting for $800 in hotel bills! We spent some off-time at the Acropolis and the Plaka with some new (and old) friends, and finished off the weekend with a Gala dinner before heading to T... read more

Hi Again Everyone, Thought I would get in another entry as I'm not sure what it is going to be like getting access to computer once I leave Greece -- and I know there will not be any once I leave Kathmandhu and am up in the Himilayas! Really enjoying trip -- seeing lots of interesting things and getting lots of pictures and video -- will try to upload some photos at some point... Getting ready to leave for airport -- flying first to Kingdom of Bahrain in Saudi Arabia, and then on to Nepal... Athens is a large city with a lot of hustle and bustle, traffic and noise... it was much nicer down the coast by the sea... I am looking forward to a change of scenery and environment, and can't wait to begin ... read more

Chapter four contains the climax and conclusion of the journey. We flew into Athens at 7 in the morning and had flights out at 4 the next morning so instead of getting a hotel or hostel, we decided to save money and hang out in Athens/ the airport and left our backpacks in lockers at Athens International. We took a taxi into the city because as long as you split them four ways, taxis are actually cheaper than everyone buying individual metro tickets. The first thing we decided we needed was coffee and food, and low and behold when we stepped out of our cab, what did we see like a shining beacon of hope - Starbucks. Oh Athens, you know my weakness. It was just about Mocha Frappuccino time, grande please, no whip. I ... read more

Hi everyone, I think it's Wed morning here -- and still Tues nite back home... There is a 10 hour time difference between Pacific time and here in Athens... Had very nice flights Monday from Abbotsford to Calgary (I have never noticed before just quite how amazing the mountains are around where we live, but I guess I'm a little more aware given my destination) and Calgary to Montreal... aisle seats with no one beside me! Montreal was a bit cool and rainy but I got to walk around a bit downtown that night, and next day went to the old part of town which is pretty neat -- got lots of pictures of old buildings and stuff... The flight from Montreal to Athens was 10 hours overnite (got here at 11am on Wed morning)... another ... read more

Overnight Bus Tales Why do we keep on doing this? Maybe because the cheapest way to get from Istanbul to Athens was by, you guessed it, an overnight bus! We left Istanbul at 10am in a very nice coach complete with two Greek drivers this time. We had been allocated the four front seats which we thought was great for watching the scenery but unfortunately it also gave us a view of how the drivers drove the bus!! We watched with a mixture of fascination and horror as our drivers drank coffee, spoke on hand-held mobile phones, looked for CDs and changed them in the console and even rolled their own cigarettes while managing the steering-wheel with their elbows!! There wasn't really much we could do so we tried to sit back, relax and enjoy the ... read more

The blazing beams of the sun shine across vast space and a crystal blue sky, bathing me in heat and light while wave after wave of cooled air molecules roll in from the Mediterranean, smash across my side, and tangle with my blowing hair. I'm standing on an Athens rooftop in the early morning, breathing and meditating after some long Hatha Yoga practice while the sweat dries on the Kenyan cloth Leso I've been using as a mat. I think about God's perspective: the simultaneous viewpoint of every particle, molecule, and complex structure in the universe. I think about the emptiness of vacuum contrasted with the burning mania of the stars. I dwell on the complexity and diversity in the make-up of planets. I fall in love again with the rocks and waters of the Earth--while ... read more

"From Sydney to the acropolis....is 30 hours by foot and wings" I started my journey in top spirits and continued this mood despite the exausting flights that got me to my destination. All that free time did give me a chance to watch borat a few more times. I had the window seat and it seemed my prayers for a couple of sexy co-eds in the seats next to me had been ignored and replaced with two middle age brits. There was an amazing lightning storm as we passed over indonesia, and i tried to ignore the possible danger it meant to the aircraft and enjoyed the show. An uneventful change at bangkok, followed by an attempt to sleep. I managed to get a few hours in before arriving at heathrow. There was a traffic jam ... read more

Well my first week in Athens was unfortunately very dissapointing. Not so much Athens' fault as the bacteria..... I had a cold. a pretty bad one at that. fever for a few days, coongestion, headaches, etc.... there wasn't much i could do but hang out in the house and sleep. bummer. Once i began to recover, we took some small little trips.... the first was to Lycavvitos, huge hill near the swankier, priceyer neighborhood of Kolonaki. As i was still foggy i didnt think to bring my camera. which i certainly regret. the day was perfect. the sunset was goregeous overlooking the Acropoplis and behind the church on the hill sat the moon perfectly full in the sky. we went into the church, lit some candles, crossed ourselves and kissed the icons.... (my germ concious ... read more

So, this post is just under 2 weeks late, but that's the way we roll in Greece. A couple of weeks ago 5 of us went to the lovely little island of Monemvasia. It was a pretty fantastic weekend, though expensive (travelling in Europe is super expensive!). We left from the bus station on Friday Morning (2 weeks ago) and traveled south into Sparta (which is pretty much a dump) and switched buses to go to the little port town of Monemvasia. Monemvasia is pretty much this huge rock sticking out of the water just off the coast of the Southern Peloponessus. On the far side of the island is a wonderful little medievel city that has been inhabited since the 10th century AD. It feels pretty much like walking around a castle. Lots of people ... read more
