James Emerson

HEPHAESTUS

A couple of years ago I was sitting in the university of Victoria’s library reading a book called \"the ancient mariners\" which is about the ancient marine history of the Mediterranean. This was the first time that I got the idea to travel across the Mediterranean and see some of the sights that I had studied in school. So After I graduated I started saving and planning and now I am off!

Untitled James Emerson I really dont think I had much of a choice in the matter. This one site contained in it so many things that I love, History, Ancient warfare, world changing events, and there have been comics written and moveis made about Thermopolye. Yes thats right, the actual site of where the movie 300 was said to take place. And you can say what you want about the movie, but take it for what its worth, a good piece of historical fiction. Did It happen exactly the way that it did in the movie, no of course not, but they did get enough of the facts right to make me happey. But I digress this is a travel blogg and not a movie review. Getting to the site proved to be a bit ... read more

Untitled James Emerson I had to do it. How can you come to greece and not see delphi, the center of the ancient world. The place where thosands, probalby millions went to get advice form the oracle of apolpo before making anykind of major descion. this one site has probably influenced the world more than anyone is aware of. How could I not go. All through university I hads heard that the place was amazing. I remember one of my proffesors saying that when you go there and see the sight, you know why people kept rebuilding the place time after time when it was destroyed by earthquaks. I prayeyed that it lived up to the hype. And still I recived further premenitions of the sights greatness while on the three hour bus ride there. ... read more

I've been told, by people wiser than myself, that traveling is not just about wandering the globe, soaking up sights and experiences that one cant get back home, but its also about self descovery. Finding out what kind of person you are, weather your the type that wants a nice hassle free trip, bereft of the unexpected with everything planed out, or if your the fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants type, who makes no plans or reservations, but figures it out as you go allong. in my case it was a happy mix of the two. But I leared something eles about myself, on the island of Mykonose, on the days where the sun was obsucred by a thin layer of clouds, enough to take the bite off, and the wind was blowing hard enough to cool the normaly ... read more

I woke up feeling very disoriented and confused. Where was I? I had bouight a ticket to Corinth, whcih I had passed through briefly on my way to Naplio, and this definatly wasnt corinth. I got off the bus to have a look around and see if I could figure it out and saw my big backpack lying on the sidewalk amongst a pile of luggage that had come from the bellie of the bus. Whereever this was it was the end of the line. I strapped the green monster on my back and began the investigation. Turns out that I was in Athens, which was fine by me. I was planning on going there anyway, I was just going to take a train from corinth in an effort to savemyself a couple of bucks. ... read more

Today I was like a Kid in a candy store. I got in to Nafpilo yesturday afternoon and didnt do much site seeing since i was pritty bagged form traveling and carrying my massive backpack as i staggered around the city trying to find a hotel. But i could just see those fortresses staring at me, beconing me to come and bask in the glory of their history. They were hard to miss, one was sitting in the harbour and the other was on top of a mountin and could be seen from anywhere in the city. But today I was rested and ready for the challange. After a harty breakfast and two cups of coffee I was ready to make the climbe and see the mountin fortress that sprawled across the uneven cliffs, almost ... read more

I left Corfu on saturday the 7th of april for the peloponese city of Patras. As i carfully stepped over borken peices of pottery, which had been hurled from windows as part of the easter celebrations, and doged the horeds of people and fire works that were randomly being set off, I considered trying to stay on the island for a bit longer. But I had already booked passage on on a ferry that would sail for 8 hours to the main land, and besides i had spent almost a week on the Island and I was getting a little to comfortable there. I took those all as sgins that it was time to move on. As I sat starring out the window on the ferry i started wondering what I was going to do ... read more

How many of you have ever taken the B.C. ferries over to Vancouver island? imagine that but a bit bigger with a pool, casino, sevral bars, a night club and a hotel, and thats what the ferry that runs from Venice to the Corfu, a little island off the coast of Greece. You might be thinking "wow that sounds awesome" and its not to bad for the first 4 hours, but 22 hours of being on a boat where everything is to expensive to enjoy gets old really fast, I now understand that song form pulp fiction, "playing solitaire till down with a deck of fifty one" because thats what i did, i had to use the a joker as the five of diamonds. And if your wondering why i had to stay up so ... read more

I have once again covered allot of Ground since the time of my last entry, at which time I I was just getting ready to leve the sunny and warm french riviara, for the suprisingy cold and wet italy. I arrived in the city of Florence at about 700 in the mourning, very tired and disorieanted after a 9 hour night train ride: It took me a couple of minutes to figure out what was going on when some one opend the dore to the train coach and staretd yelling "frienza" once i figured it out I had to quicky break camp pack up my few strew possions and hustle off the train before it took off for its next destination. About an hour later of walking through the rain I found the hostle, checked ... read more

I'm going to be sad to leave Nice, not because the city is particularly special or anything. Dont get me wrong, Ive had a great time wandering allong the soast line, taking day trips to little midevil villages and lookig around tyhe very expensive Monaco, Its been a great time. But the thing thats made this place the best is the hostel that I've been staying at. Its fantastic, and I'm a little worried that all my other acomadation is going to go downhill from here. Mabey not, but this place is going to be hard to beat. Right from the get go it was a cool place. Matt and I got into Nice having only a phone number of a place to call where we might be able to stay, so we called the number ... read more

Since I last wrote I have survived quite a bit, gone through highs and lows that filled mewithpure excitement and made me almost want throw in the towel. In Barcalona I excperienced some of the Greatest architecture that I have ever seen, I do have pictures which i will try and put up, but my technologically un savie self Cant figure out how to upload themusing the forign computer prompts, so you are just going tohave to wait. The greatest sight in barcalona was by far the Santan Familia (probably not spelled right) designed by a guy named Gaudie, whostarted the temple way backin the 1880s, and never saw his workcompleated as he was squiched by a trollie on his way to inspect the site one day. Now in 2007 the temple is stillnot done, but ... read more
