We flew into Cancun to clear skies and sunshine (which came with the obligatory heat and humidity). After going through customs, and Mom and Dad's first stamp on their passports we were on our way. I was super excited to see my parents as they experienced another country, especially Mexico! We headed towards Chichen Itza on the toll road and stopped at Valladolid to get gas. The attendent filled up the tank and the total came to $285 pesos, we gave him $300 and he said the total was $385. We looked at the meter but he had already started another vehicle... hmmm. So, our first transaction in Mexico was us getting ripped off by the gas station attendent. Great! We arrived at the Dolores Alba Hotel and had a delicious Yucatan dinner. The next morning, ... read more

Roskilde Julie J Vanover I was really excited when I put up this blog because Rockilde wasn't listed in the cities of Denmark, so I added it. I was the first to put up a blog on Roskilde and get it on the travel blog map! To go where no travel blogger has gone before.... I went to Roskilde to see the Viking Museum where the remains of 5 viking ships are on display. The museum also went into the history of the vikings and how and where they lived. There had been a long held belief that there was a sunken viking ship in a shallow area in the bay outside of Roskilde. Upon investigating these rumors they found out that there was not one but five viking ships that had been purposely sunk ... read more

Malmo Europe » Sweden » Malmo By Miss Julie June 18th 2007 Malmo Julie J Vanover I took a day trip to Malmo from Copenhagen, it was a little less than a half hour train ride over this huge bridge. I liked riding over the water on this huge bridge. I didn't realize that Copenhagen was so close to Sweden. I really didn't know anything about Malmo, I just knew that I wanted to see Sweden, so I arrived and just walked around town. I walked through this huge beautiful series of parks with windmills, ponds, and of course bridges. There was a ton of geese that ran around everywhere and let me know that th... read more

Copenhagen Julie J Vanover I have to confess that by the time that I arrived in Copenhagen I was pretty road weary. I slept in pretty late every day and then would lounge around my hostel for a few hours before I would head out for the day. I really liked everything that I saw in Copenhagen, I just didn't have an extremely good deal of motivation to see it. I mainly walked around the streets, I did a self guided walking tour and saw many beautiful buildings from churches to the Rosenburg Castle. My favorites were "The Little Mermaid" statue and the Nyhavn canal street. I really liked the red brick architecture as well. I took stroll through Christiania, a 'social experiment' that stemmed from some sqatters in an old military complex. I ate ... read more

Amsterdam Julie J Vanover I arrived in Amsterdam and I needed to find my hostel quickly so that I could get settled in and make it to the Free Tour of Amsterdam. The only problem was that there were no written directions on the website, only a map. So I used the little map that I had in my book and what I could remember from the web. Well, somewhere I turned the wrong way and the 10 minute walk from the train station turned into over an hour walk. I rushed to the meeting point for the free tour and passed them on the sidewalk so I just joined in the line! Yeah! I really enjoyed the free tour, we went into the history of the area starting from it's first settlement and the ... read more

Colonge and the Rhine River Valley Julie J Vanover I came to Cologne because I wanted to see the Rhine River Valley and Cologne was the coolest city- by far- around the area. I didn't do alot of sightseeing in Cologne because I always was getting in really late. I did see the Cathedral there which is massive, you step out of the train station and the Cathedral is literally right there. It is so big that your neck gets tired looking at it. Just walking around it was a workout. Unfortunately this was really all that I saw of Cologne, this city is on my list of cities to see more of. There isn't a whole lot to say about my cruise down the Rhine, I started in Koblenz and ended in Bingen see ... read more

Brugge and Brussels Julie J Vanover I thought that Belgium was very suprisingly beautiful, however my encounters with people here were very odd. I got off the night train from Berlin in Brussels and hopped on the local train to Brugge. The train was practically empty and so when a guy came to try to sit across from me experience had taught me this wasn't a good thing. He spoke a language that I didn't recognize (maybe Flemish) and I played dumb when he was asking if he could sit across from me- luckily my pack was in the way otherwise I believe he would have just sat down. He sat across the aisle from me after I played dumb with his gestures and continued writing in my journal. I could see him moving and ... read more

Ghent Julie J Vanover I came into Brussels on the night train from Berlin and headed to Brugge where I was staying. I got to my hostel but I couldn't get into my room until after 2 o'clock so I decided that since I didn't have a home I would take a day trip to Ghent and really feel homeless. I arrived in Ghent and finally found the tourist information office and got a map. The lady asked my nationality and gave me the map and showed me where I was. I moved over to the side to find what I wanted to see and the lady asked me if I wanted a walking tour. I said I would love one, she said that she usually didn't offer it to Americans because they weren't ever ... read more

Berlin Julie J Vanover I arrived in Berlin much later in the day than I had planned because of my visit to St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague. I didn't get checked in at my hostel until about 9pm and I still needed dinner. So I headed over to the main street a block away from my hostel and had an Indian Buffet. While I was eating I ran into two girls that I had stayed with in Budapest, they were on a pub crawl and seemed to be very much enjoying themselves. As I was walking back to my hostel I walked past a building that at first glance appeared to be a vacant building. Upon further inspection there were many red lights in the back of the building so I wandered back there to ... read more

Kutna Hora Julie J Vanover The morning that I had planned on going to the Castle in Prague I went to Kutna Hora instead because of President Bush's visit. Kutna Hora is a town about an hour outside of Prague that is known for the Kostnice Sedlec Ossuary inside of the All Saints Church. I got into Kutna Hora and had to take another train to get into the town, we stopped at this stop that said Sedlec, so I asked the conductor if this was the Ossuary. He nodded yes, but it appeared that we were in the middle of nowhere. I suspected that this was a funny joke to play on the tourists, but a few other tourists had gotten off as well, so I got off. And I am glad I did ... read more
