Well this wasn't in the original plan….. New York again!!! A second time in the USA and New York City in 2007 was never on the agenda, after going there in January with Daz, Mai and Alissa…. But during the middle of the year, when we were experiencing supposedly the wettest summer ever in the UK, I was chatting to Mum and Dad regarding their trip to Europe and what we would be doing when they arrived. Egypt was on the agenda as you all probably know by now, and they would be using their Frequent flyer points to do an around the world trip. It turned out that they had to make a 12 day stop in New York before getting the flight back to Australia. Qantas Frequent Flyers don’t make thing too easy on ... read more

Arriving in Cairo late at night would be a traumatic experience, except that we had organized a hotel transfer. On exiting customs there was a smiling Egyptian with a “The Bensons” sign . Transfer was fantastic and we were in bed within about 45 mins of landing. The Windsor hotel is one of the very old establishment hotels of Cairo, past it’s grandeur, sadly. But it was an atmospheric place to stay with a great bar and a quaint old fashioned lift, with a lift attendant. However, it was the Sphinx and the Pyramids that we had come to see. Early next morning Dad and I went for a walk and met a guide called Ali. We negotiated a 130 Egyptian pounds tour for 6 hours and he drove us, weaving and braking, through the chaotic ... read more

Well I finished off a few things at work while Mum and dad rested up in Walthamstow. We grabbed another Car, this time a Peugeot 307 and headed to the south of the UK. Mum wanted to go on a "Mythic quest"..so we visited Glastonbury Tor, once the Isle of Avalon and Cadbury Castle, formerly known as Camelot. Dad wanted to visit Dartmouth and I wanted to see the town of Torquay. Staying onboard a Cruise boat for 2 nights, with our car safely stowed in the hold was a great way to get to the continent. We arrived in Bilbao well rested at 7am and took off through Basque country towards France. We were heading for Brittany and Normandy, because rain had set in. By the time we reached the beach at Royan the sun ... read more

I headed from work on Monday night to Heathrow airport to pick up the folks who were flying in from Bangkok. It had been 9 months since leaving Aus when Mum and Dad dropped Darren, Mai and I off at Sydney airport. So it was great to see them walk through the gateway. After a few hugs I led them down to the metro and headed to Walthamstow, which they would use as a base for the next 5 weeks. After settling in, we went to see Spamalot in the west end, which was a riotous musical based on Monty Python’s Holy Grail. We visited Ronnie Scotts, a famous Jazz club, and they saw the sights and delights of London, including the Tower, The Tower Bridge, Soho and Oxford St. The following weekend we grabbed a ... read more

I decided to take the Thursday off instead of working, even though we were leaving from Heathrow at 8pm, I new it would be a late night. Cam wandered to Walthamstow, and we headed on the Tube thru central London towards Heathrow. After checking in and ensuring we had a window seat (at night). If any of you know me, one thing I’ve always wanted to see is the aurora borealis. (Aka, the northern lights). This was the closest I had ever been to the Artic Circle and therefore my best ever chance to see the lights, unfortunately even though we were flying into Iceland at midnight it was still dusk. They do call it land of the midnight sun during summer. On flying into Reykjavik, we land and find the quietest airport on earth. Cam ... read more

G'day all, I've been living in London for the past 4 months now, which means that I've been away from Australia for over 7. After arriving in London from Greece, It was time I found a place to call home. I had been traveling for over 3 months and was ready to settle down in one place. Also the $$ were low and I needed a Job. I found a nice little room in North London, a place called Walthamstow. Around 30mins by tube to the Centre of London and I've been working for the last few months at a health company running a migration project as a Systems Engineer. I have met a great bunch of people, funnily enough most of them are not from UK. Indian, Italian, Polish etc. This town is very ... read more

It's been a while since the last update (sorry, been having too much fun) This was to be the last country before heading back to the UK to obtain a contract, Another Cab takes us over the border from Albania to Greece, We jump on a bus on the border and head towards the town of Ioannina. This is where we were going to grab some transport out to the monasteries of Meteora. (Mum and Dad advised us to check these out, they missed them and always regretted it.) So that’s basically how the travel plans were made, and I'm sure glad we did. We arrive in Ioannina in the morning, a bus to Meteora leaves at 3pm. We bunk down to spend a few hours before the bus leaves. Cam goes to grab the ... read more

We say goodbye to Emma and grab an overnight sleeper to the newest Country in the world. Montenegro is only 9 months old since it declared independence from Serbia. We arrive in Bar with torrential rain, as I had the homey waterproof gear Daz and I bought in New York, I was assigned to find out how to get to Kotor. (see pic of me in the rain and my Homey gear. I just needed some Bling to make the set) Well it turns out my waterproof gear was not so waterproof with torrential rain and I was soaked to the bone by the time I found where the buses left from. Oh well 5 bucks can’t buy quality in New York. Kotor was amazing, an ancient town with massive mountains behind it. A huge ... read more

We didn't plan on heading to Serbia, we were going to Pogoricia (Montenegro’s capital) as it was quite close to Sarajevo. On finding out that it’s an 8 hour bus ride and the same time train ride to Belgrade we chose to continue our trip via train with Emma as she couldn’t do without the continuous New Zealand accent teasing. : What to say about Belgrade. Well I’m sorry to say, not much. The place was polluted, it smelt and I just really didn’t get much out of it. We grabbed a decent enough hostel and headed out to see the sights. Another walled city that wasn’t quite as complete as all the others we had come cross on our travels, nowhere really spoke much English so we pointed to certain items on menus for ... read more

Between the ages of 14-17 I was finishing the last years of my schooling, starting my first job, played squash and tennis in my free time, met up with mates and doing the usual stuff most of us did during the years of 1992 to 1995. During this time, the news reported on a country called Bosnia, and specifically a city called Sarajevo. Now we were far away from this place and ok I was old enough to remember but not quite old enough to know the extent of what really took place. Maybe it wasn’t even my age that was the reason for not knowing exactly what was going on. Who of us can seriously say we know exactly what is going on in Iraq at this very moment. Who of us knows the ... read more
