Today we left Poland on our way westward to our final destination in Paris at the end of the month. The hotel last night was luxury and we were sorry to leave after one night but we had another border to cross today. The drive through Poznan this morning was straightforward and all the signage was easy to follow. It wasn’t long before we were driving through the familiar countryside of open pasture and woodland. The route we followed had the best road surface we have experienced in Poland and this meant a relaxed and comfortable drive in preparation for the perfect roads we were expecting in Germany. The only bumps were the disused railway tracks still crossing the road. Heading westward the weather looked quite threatening with large black clouds forming across the sky and ... read more

Germany is a country of middle sized cities. No sprawl such as is seen in Shanghai or Istanbul, rather a city seems to be an extension of the village feel. A church or two or five, a market place or a few and shopping streets rather than massive indoor malls everywhere. I spent my last day in Germany in Frankfurt and Kronberg with my hosts Connie and Jonas. They live in Kronberg which is an easy 20 minute commute on the S Bahn from the centre of Frankfurt. Kronberg is a small village with very narrow old streets, famous for its apple wine festival which lasts a whole week, and the whole area is famous for its green sauce. This sauce was invented by Goethe's mother ( Goethe is known as the genius of modern German ... read more

Geo: 50.0924, 8.68195Absolutely brilliant breakfast this morning - it was the standard Bulgarian spread, with cold cuts, cheese, yogurt, cereal, coffee, tea, bread with absolutely delicious homemade jams ... even though the cheese was mushy and not that tasty, and some of the cold cuts were actually hot dogs oddly encased in inedible plastic, it was absolutely brilliant. Why? Tiramisu. Yup, tiramisu!!! I've never had it for breakfast before but after this morning, I questioned why I've never done so. Doesn't get any better than that, it's the Bulgarian Breakfast of Champions!!! Coming back to Sofia, I had a bit of a Bulgarian Bucket List - the UFO Monument at Mount Buzludzha was a big miss, but there were still a couple of small things back in Sofia I wanted to cross off the list before ... read more

Geo: 50.0924, 8.68195Sean here:Despite my best efforts and desires, I do not like the flight to Europe. I know, I know, poor me . . . shouldn't I just be happy that I get the opportunity to travel to Europe in general? Well, I do harbor that appreciation, but the luster definitely wanes after 31 hours without sleep! Here's a little recap of Day 1.We started out eager with anticipation as the alarm sounded at 4:45am. Compared to other trips, we actually had our packing and cleaning wrapped up for a decent bedtime of about 11pm so we had a good sleep base to start from. Danny showed up to take his role as wheelman followed shortly by fellow travelers T-Ball and J-Ball (as I like to call them anyway – they are actually Tony Ball, ... read more

Geo: 50.0924, 8.68195This Blog continues from my previous one. I was still staying in Witten, which ended up being four nights instead of two. Partly because I took a day trip to Koln, or Cologne. The previous night we had checked the cost at 26 euro, I got the right ticket but when I was on the train the conductor said I had the wrong ticket and slapped me with a on the spot 40 euro fee. I went to the ticket office in Koln and they said I had the right ticket and couldn't understand why I was charged 40 euro. I was able to get my money back but had to send the documents in and they would transfer the money back in to my account. And yet I still see no money return, dodgy ... read more

We were only in the airport and the train station in Frankfurt. The airport seemed nice enough, if not still a little smoky--there were designated Camel Smoking Stations (fishbowl glass enclosures) for smokers but I suspect the smoke was wafting out into non-smoking areas. To get from the airport to the train station we took a bright yellow double-length shuttle bus. Our impressions from the shuttle of Frankfurt: 1. It's an industrial town 2. Lots of change is happening, new buildings being built, transition. One building was all concrete, which reminded me of images I'd seen of Eastern Europe during the Cold War. It was a hotel. Frankfurt was, of course, a Western acquisition early on so I was surprised to see it. I read a book recently about WWII as told from a Hitler Youth ... read more

Our overnight flight to Frankfurt went very smoothly. We even arrived about 1/2 hour early. Germany is 7 hours ahead of us in Chicago. We departed at 7:40 PM from O'Hare and arrived in Frankfort at 11:30 local. We couldn't check into our hotel until 2:30, so we decided to take a long walk along the Main River, which runs through the middle of Frankurt. It was a beautiful day, sunny and high 70's. We walked through an old section of town called the Rumer, which is kind of a large square with old cathedrals and shops. We stopped at an outdoor cafe right on the river and participated in the national pastime, having a couple beers with the locals. We're trying to get our days and nights back in order (I'm writing this at 4:30 ... read more

Geo: 50.0924, 8.68195Dear Spain,I was a fool. I beg for your forgiveness. My indiscretions with Croatia and Montenegro were only fleeting moments of fancy, where I was caught in a whirlwind of desire and emotion. They both meant nothing to me; deep down, I only thought of you while I was with them. I am a horrible pig, that will forever live with the guilt and the shame of cheating on you ... I hope that you can find a way to forgive me, with the boundless love that only you can offer. My life had been dark and empty without you and once again, your beautiful light has illuminated my heart and soul, filling my memory with beautiful moments that will forever be cherished. You, and you alone, are the only one for me. Perdóname mi ... read more

Last day in Europe... for now! Today is my last full day in Europe... I can't believe it's over already! It was the fastest 3 weeks ever. I am really upset that I'm leaving, but I know that I will be back for sure. I learned a lot on this trip, and I think it is for a few reasons. 1. This is the first time I have traveled for an extended period of time in counties that I had not been to before. I origionally thought I was a semi-experienced traveler, and to some extent I am sure I am. However, while in Rome, my trips never extended for more than a few days, no more than a week at a time. Therefore, bringing clothes and supplies for 3 weeks all at once was challenging ... read more
