The best ever birthday present came this year when my hubby, Glyn, bought me tickets and flights to see Jello Biafra and the Guantanamo School of Medicine in Frankfurt. We were unable to see them in the UK due to various reasons and I was gutted as I’ve been a Jello fan since I was 14 years old and have only seen him sing once – I’ve seen three spoken word performances though, but still… It had been hard for Glyn to get cheap flights from the UK, so as a result we left Stoke at 2am for the three hour drive to Standsted airport. After an hour’s flight, we landed at Franfurt Hahn, an airport no bigger than a chicken farm in the middle of the countryside with the pinkest loos you will ever see. ... read more

Geo: 50.0924, 8.68195We had flown from Chicago to Frankfurt via Lufthansa Airlines. The plane was one of those huge planes that had the second level. Good German efficiency had lines for us to get in to but the numbers stopped right before our row number! Finally found attendant that told us to go ahead and board. We were seated at the bulkhead which meant we were able to prop our feet on the wall separating us from the business class which was nice. They served us dinner even though the plane did not leave until 10:15 pm. Following the rule of eat when you can because airport food is quite expensive we enjoyed a fish entree and two glasses of wine to help us sleep you see.We were able to get some sleep because you were able ... read more

Last day full day of trip before getting on the long ride to USA. We had to pay separately for breakfast here. After our morning duties, we checked the breakfast spread to see if it is worh paying 15 euros per plate. The spread seemed good. We finised our breakfast in the hotel itself before checking out. Front desk folks were willing to hold the luggage for us. Our flight to Frankfurt was to leave at 1:51 PM. We planned to return to the hotel by 1 PM. Since the train station was only 0.5 kms, we decided to walk to the station. After leaving the bags, we again walked to Salzburg old town. Elevator to top of the hill for a bird's eye view of the city Got tickets for old town boat ride Walked ... read more

I woke up after a luuuuvely sleep, and was ready for my first full day in Germany. Alex took me to buy food for breakfast from the local market that is literally 20 metres from her front door. There are stalls the full length of the road, full of fresh fruit and veg, butchers, a smelly cheese stall, florists, bakers, and fast food stalls. Alex bought lots of breads, sliced meats and pate. The breakfast we had was a massive feast with everything we got at the market, plus cheese, smoked salmon and jams. I was stuffed to bursting, but hey it would be rude not to eat everything offered :) Then we went to Kingstone which is the town where Alex works as a teacher of 17-18 year olds. Its a lovely old town that ... read more

Today I arrived in Frankfurt airport to be greeted by a smiling Alex, a friend of Joannes from Uni. When I was coming through customs there was a queue that took about 15 mins to clear, Alex said it was because someone had left a bag unattended and the bomb disposal unit had arrived and used a robot to investigate the aforementioned bag, that turned out to be a very innocent bag left behind by a forgetaful man !! So we arrived at Alex and Timo's appartment, and they have a double decker garage, you drive in normally, then you use a hydrolic lift and it raises the car up, and tah dah !!! there is space for another one underneath...... genuis !!! After settling in and having a nice cup of tea, we went out ... read more

On 9th May we fly to Perth to see our son and daughter-in-law Adam and Ange for 4 days before flying to Frankfurt, Germany to see our friends Kevin & Julia who we met in Africa. Kevin has been most helpful with the issue of us buying a motor home in Germany. He found that as foreigners, we cannot register and insure a vehicle in Germay/Europe so we have had to go to Plan "B".... and that is buy a vehicle through Turner Cars and Campers in The Netherlands where they find vehicles for us and check them out mechanically and negotiate a good price for us. They have found a way so that we can register and insure a vehicle as foreigners in Europe. We will be going by train from Frankfurt to Utrecht which ... read more

When I think of our time in Frankfurt, my mouth starts to water. From a friend who lives in Frankfurt I learned that the local favorite dishes are Possman Apfelwein and schnitzel with green sauce. Sampling these and finding a Black Forest cuckoo clock were our travel goals in Frankfurt. On our first morning in Frankfurt, we took a trolley to the tourist center of the city called Romer. Stepping off the trolley, it felt like we were transported to a postcard scene of Germany. This section was restored to how it looked before WW2 (the entire city was destroyed). Along with the facade, there were lots of quaint shops and restaurants that are worth a visit. Online research suggested that Handwerkskunst was the place in Frankfurt to buy my cuckoo clock. The store was close ... read more

Arrived in Frankfurt at around 5.30 in the morning and made it to our hotel at around 7am. Decided to stay awake all day so we could minimise jetlag and so launched straight into breakfast at the hotel. Spent the day walking around Frankfurt and found the christmas markets which seem to be set up in all the major towns and cities in Europe. Had our first taste of Gluwein (hot mulled wine) and will probably be our last as I think it is an acquired taste! Connor is going quite well with his German speaking. Very proud to see him talking in the local lingo although almost everyone here seems to have a good grasp of English so it's not really a problem. Sussed out train station which is huge and booked tomorrows train transfers ... read more

Sarah and I spent our first two days in Frankfurt, getting over jetlag and getting into the German language (though many people, especially the young people speak very good English.) Some words are easy as they sound the same (eg. old is spelled alt but prounounced the same as old but with a German accent.) Frankfurt is very business oriented though there are some nice squares in the old town and an easy riverside path. We have read that the weather at this time of year can be overcast and rainy and we were not dissapointed. Mostly it has been grey with a little drizzle here and there, but during our walking tour it started to rain and we just had time to rush under part of a building before it came down in sheets. In ... read more
