Touchdown in Frankfurt March 5, 2024 Kirsten and I scanned all the European flights leaving JFK and the best option was Frankfurt. So, as I’m finishing my second glass of Rioja, I’ll type out a few lines. I watched a great romcom, “She Came to Me” while eating dinner. I read a few chapters in my new book “The 3 Body Problem”. Now I’m going to put this seat into sleep mode and try to get some sleep. Kirsten is already out and I’m going to be asleep soon. Wake up Mr. Vaughan, woah... that was a rough flight and I only got about 2 hrs of sleep. I felt like we were riding on brick roads in downtown Orlando. Kirsten slept like a baby. We had breakfast and as they were taking away my tray, ... read more

The rest days provide an opportunity to spend a bit of time in one spot rather than roll into town attend to what needs to be done, eat, sleep, breakfast, ride, rinse-and-repeat. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't be doing this if I didn't enjoy it, but the rest days are GOLD. Frankfurt is a beautiful city. It has blended the old with the new in a more integrated way than we normally see where the old part of town is totally separate to the new part. There are lots and lots of high end shops to cater to any needs although it did take me numerous attempts to find somewhere that sold Garmin Heart Rate Monitors. Mine died after the first week of the ride and I've been trying to replace it ever since. Jeff ... read more

Let's start with the night before. As I mentioned, we were meeting up with Baerbel and Michael for dinner in their home town just across the river from Bingen. We caught the ferry over and were taken to the top of the hills behind Rudesheim which afforded great views over the Rhine (see photo). We then went on to have dinner in a local restaurant that served authentic German food. There was live music playing and the place had a great vibe. We had an amazing time with our hosts, the meal, conversation and company were all perfect. We caught the ferry back to Bingen at about 11:20pm and didn't get to bed until after midnight. This morning we both woke about 6:30am and began the ritual of packing up again - it is already getting ... read more

July 13, 2023 – Touch down in the Father Land I wake up to something or someone tickling my hand, it’s Kirsten and they are setting down my breakfast in front of me. “Vould yous like some koffee Her Wangan?”. Ya, Ya. Kirsten ordered me the 3-cheese quiche, talk about rich I could only eat half of it. The koffee was GREAT. We’re landing and I’m thinking the pilot is bring in this plane in hot, or Maverick from TopGun is flying. We are off the plane and head to immigration, Kirsten goes first, as she speaks German like she’s lived her all her life. I go next, he looks at me, then looks toward Kirsten walking away and says Kirsten’s husband. Yea, that’s my name. He stamps my passport and I move on. Kirsten asks ... read more

The Rain has caught up with us Oct 14, 15 & 16 2022 We slept in late this morning knowing it was raining all over Germany. Kirsten and I vonder down to breakfast and the dining room is full. We find our table, we’re happy but sad knowing our getaway is coming to an end. Last night as Kirsten was slipping away, I started checking the flights. Yeah, we’re doing the buddy pass shuffle. Its Friday and the flights Saturday looked pretty good, it’s raining so l suggest.... let’s go home and get out of this rain. Kirsten agreed, so after breakfast I loaded Frankfurt Zentrum “city center” into the google maps and Apple Car Play took it from there. We ended up in downtown Frankfurt, parked the car and grabbed our umbrellas and walked the ... read more

This is my third attempt to cycle in Croatia, maybe the fourth? Previous trips were scuttled due to Covid, or the reluctance of the tour operator. No matter, here we are, ready to go, despite the war in the Ukraine, and the chaos in the Balkans. I land in Frankfurt, and immediately head to Athens for a few days, to acclimate (jet lag mostly), see my friends (my Greek brothers), and move south to nicer weather. After three nights in Athens, I fly to Belgrade, Serbia, before flying to Split to start the cycle cruise. My erstwhile, good friend, Dirty Pat, says Belgrade, and the famous Hotel Moskva are must see. We shall see! This type of cycling trip is rather unique for me. We cycle during the day, and stay on a small cruise ship ... read more

Day 8 – The flight to Dubai where we transited to Frankfurt was at least 30 minutes early and the scheduled departure 20 minutes later so we were left with over 3 hours to kill at Dubai airport. However it is so strung out it took a good half an hour to get to our gate via lifts, escalators, a train and more lifts and added to that a break for a coffee and snack the time didn’t drag too much. However, given we had no more than 30 minutes sleep on the flight to Dubai we were both feeling pretty jaded by the time we boarded the Frankfurt-bound flight at 3 am. The flight to Frankfurt was very smooth – although we ended up with an exit row seat which was great for legroom it ... read more

What a Day this has been!!!! (start of a song from one of my favorite musicals!) What a rare mood I'm in!!! WOW! Today was a travel day from Rome to Frankfurt. It is here that we will meet up with our tour guide from Image Tours and start our two week guided tour around Europe. Our driver showed up a little early so we were rushing around trying not to hold him up. No lift, so we had to drag our suitcases upstairs and through the gravel courtyard to the street! We got to the airport way, way early which Is great....no rushing! We get to Lufthansa only to find out we have to check our carry ons because, as the agent said, they were too big. Now we have covered 5 airports so far ... read more

So, Frankfurt is literally a shit show on Sunday mornings around the train station... Literally human shit in the underpass and on the subway platform. 3 shits in the less than 10min walk to the subway platform. Wow, guys. I'm really in a rush to return here lol. Fun fact: Frankfurt is actually the first city in continental Europe that I stepped foot it, and boy am I glad that the first time I was here I didn't come anywhere near the train station lol. Would have put a bit of a damper on my introduction to travelling all those years ago... ahem. Anyway. Thankfully the Old Town was a poop-free zone. I headed off to see the cathedral and the area around there. I mentioned I'm at the point of my trip where I'm losing ... read more
