It was the middle of the night and all was silent. Huggie Bug and Anita were tucked up in their beds dreaming of the adventure they had had with the zip and the shoelace. The light of the moon shone through a gap in the curtain and landed on the zip and the shoelace. It was so bright that it woke them up. They decided to wriggle free and go looking for an adventure. They had to go very quietly so that they didn’t wake the sleeping girls. Zip and Shoelace crawled through a tiny hole in the window and jumped down to the gound. They looked around deciding which way to go. Should they go into the dark woods or should they turn right and go into the city. Hmm what a decision to make. ... read more

Well, getting to Heathrow was a bit of a challenge. I had to swipe one of those bell hop type baggage carts to get my luggage from my room to the bus stop just out the back of the hotel. At 7.20 in the morning there was already a huge crowd waiting for the bus. Whoopty doda. It was freezing outside and I think I lost all feeling in my toes while I waited. Once the bus turned up the mob mentality took over the group. Everybody wanted to get onboard that bus (including me). I had slightly resigned myself to the fact that I wouldn’t be able to get on that bus. If I could have I would have taken the luggage trolley with me, but alas I think the hotel would have had something ... read more

Frankfurt was a pleasant surprise. I arrived at the airport and took the S-bahn into the city, to the main train station (Hauptbahnhof). I had a few hours before the train, so I left the luggage in a locker (costs 2 Euroes, near McDonald's) and went for a walk. The neighborhood right in front of the station was a bit seedy, with a lot of strip clubs and XXX movie theaters, but I didn't feel unsafe in any way. On the other hand, it was on Sunday during the day. The old town was surprisingly close. There were shops set up for the Christmas market, but nothing was open; what a pity. I visited Schirn, where there was an exhibit of (replicas of) Mao-era sculptures: Rent Collection Courtyard. It was interesting, but the admission was expensive. ... read more

The Allies are back! Frankfurt has been a breath of fresh air after our 11 day tour of Russia. Don't get me wrong, I very much enjoyed my time in both St Petersburg and Moscow; I could spend a great deal longer further experiencing the history and culture of Russia, as well as the approaching minus degree Celsius temperatures, however, for a first time visit, a change of pace was definitely welcomed after the 11th day. Little things like having to carry your passport around you at all times whilst in Russia slowly became more like having a ball and chain around your foot. The heightened sense of alert you had to maintain; watching out for pickpockets, and being prepared to mime what you are after to non-English speaking people became quite exhausting to think of ... read more

Thats how I was greeted by the Immigration officer in Frankfurt. After first disembarking from the plane, there were police at the gates asking to check everyone's passports. Seeing an Australian passport we were waved through, they only seemed concerned were the Russian ones. Last stop and one I was definately looking forward to was Frankfurt, after spending some time there at the end of my trip last time. With not so much time, and even less after a 3hr delay in Moscow we hit the ground running, booking two tours, one a day trip to the Rhine River the next day. Heading out to the Rhine, our first stop was lunch where Coke cost more than wine! Lunch was nice though and after it was out to the boat that would take us on a ... read more

So, I'm spending another night in Frankfurt, and making another 400 euros. I spent the day just wandering around Frankfurt, following some tourist map (more or less). You can look at the pictures, but to be honest, Frankfurt is pretty boring. Tomorrow's flights are overbooked as well, but I think it's time to come home (unless they make me an offer I can't refuse). ... read more

I made it safely to the Frankfurt airport after quite a delay in Chicago. I have so much to talk about already, I've met some nice people along the way and made connections for when I stay in Germany. On the plane ride from Seattle to Chicago I sat next to Jens, a 22 year old German who was finishing up his 4 week holiday in America. We talked about the sights, the people and how Europeans and Americans are different yet the same. He said that Seattle reminded him of a European city, very much. He and I are going to try to meet up in Germany when I get there, should be fun. He promised me a beer. Once I arrived in Chicago I grabbed a bite to eat and stretched my legs. Chicago ... read more

Trip to Frankfurt YEA!!! We slept in! That was really nice. We staggered down the stairs in groups. Lee and I were in the middle of the pack. Will came in last. Ate breakfast, got dressed to go to Frankfurt for the day. It was decided that we'd take the train as it would be easier than finding a parking space in Frankfurt. Annya led us to the train station; we had to wait just a bit for the train and off we went. We were like little kids when we got off the train. Wow! Look at that! Take a picture. Over there. Wait look over here. Old buildings and new buildings mixed together. Different types of shops and outdoor cafes. Tdom Bah led us to an Eastern Indian store. Lots of beautiful fabric. Perfect ... read more
