Making Papyrus
Cairo. Demonstration of making papyrus.
Terry: Rich, Kim and I talked about our trip. We agreed that we were really glad we came to Egypt. We did manage to cram a lot of things into a short period of time, but hats of to Kim for arranging everything! We saw a bit of Cairo, sailed down (I think) the Nile stopping at exotic ports of call, meandered through ancient historical temples, dodged aggressive vendors in local bazaars, took a ride on a traditional felucca (boat), visited temples of gods and tombs of pharaohs, stayed at a beautiful hotel, put some part of our bodies in the [View Full Entry]

Glimpse of the Red Sea from my "patio."
El Quseir Nice place. Right on the Red Sea. Across that sea is Saudi Arabia. We’re in Egypt. That’s in Africa. We’re a short boat trip from Arabia. All this probably won’t sink in until three weeks after we’re home. I’ve been internet deprived and even though the brochure said wireless access, not. So forget that, Kim and I are heading to the pool. We did have a relaxing day. I, of course, wanted a massage, but my leg is still too swollen. Last night I only slept a couple of hours because I couldn’t get comfortable. Didn’t know what to [View Full Entry]

Brown, green and mountains ... sorta like Tucson.
We have such a full day ahead of us. Plan A was to be done with the Valley of the Kings and be on our way to El Quseir, a hotel on the Red Sea where we have reservations for two nights before heading back to London. Due to some river boat snafoos, we are now in Plan B. Plan B is a whirlwind tour of: Colossi of Memnon, Valley of the Kings, Temple of Hatshepsut and Temple of Karnak. Then a drive of five hours to El Quseir. Off we go. Early in the morning. Really early. Our van is [View Full Entry]

We're trying to get into the main entrance at the Temple of Horus
It’s Sunday morning … I’m back on track. We’re in Edfu, or ancient Djeba as it was once called. Ahmed tells us we’re going to the Temple of Horus, the falcon headed god. Usually we walk or get in a van. Not this time. Waiting at the dock are horse and buggy after horse and buggy. The buggies are black with silver trim, some decorated more than others. Lots of colorful dangles. I’m liking this. Ahmed escorts us to one of the buggies and we hop in the back. A little squishy, but we manage. Ahmed sits with the driver. And [View Full Entry]

Kom Ombo, Kim's Story Africa » Egypt » Upper Egypt » Kom Ombo
I tried to get Kim's story into my blog on Kom Ombo, but that didn't work! So she gets her own blog. Here's Kim's story: We were given our 15-20 minutes free time after our guide finished his tour at the Temple of Kom Ombo. Mom went her own way, and Rich and I wondered around for our allotted time. When we were done, we headed to the meeting point. I sat on the side of a pillar next to Ahmet and a local man, while Rich took some more pictures, and we waited for Mom to show. Rich said something [View Full Entry]

Temples of Sobek and Haroeris
What day is it? I have no clue. Kim tells me this happened on Saturday. Our itinerary was changed, or we missed an excursion, or I’m confused, and since I am now in London, I have no idea what we did when! But I do remember the things we saw, so here goes: The River Nile: sand on the west side, lush vegetation on the right. Time to sit on the pool deck and get a bit of sun as we continue our river boat journey down the River Nile. It takes some processing to realize that we are in Africa, [View Full Entry]

We're dressed up for Egyptian Nite.
Yesterday was so busy that I didn’t have time to write. So I’m trying to catch up this afternoon, Sunday, while we are jockeying for position at the only lock on the Nile between Aswan and Luxor. So, yesterday. We had an opportunity to “sleep in” which meant a choice. As breakfast was served between 7:00 and 8:00 a.m. and we didn’t have to meet our guide, Ahmed, until 9:00 a.m., did we want to sleep or eat? I slept. By accident. Kim tried to call my room to wake me up, but I never heard the phone ring and she [View Full Entry]

Another long, but exciting day! Up at 6:00 a.m., dragging ourselves to the lobby to check out. Forget breakfast!! It was either sleep more and eat less, or visa versa, and we’re not 20 any more!!! We needed our sleep!!! Our guide and driver were waiting for us. We were running a few minutes late, but the drive back to Cairo wasn’t as bad as yesterday (was it just yesterday?). Today was some type of holiday, and the highways were relatively chaos free. However, as our driver pulled up to the airport (brand new as of five months ago), we were [View Full Entry]

I couldn't see these pyramids at night, but in the light or morning, there they were.
Greetings from Giza! Wow! What a full day we had!!! After a wonderful breakfast buffet, Rich, Kim and I headed out with our driver, Muhammad, our guide who picked us up at the airport, Nuan, and our guide for the day, Suhair. Nuan said goodby at the Cairo Museum and left us in the good hands of Suhair. The drive into Cairo didn't take as long as the drive to the hotel last night. The traffic was not as heavy, but still crazy! Reminded me of driving in Naples, Italy where when there are three lanes of traffic, there are five [View Full Entry]

Wow!I slept 12 hours. Kim and I had a busy day ... many errands to run before we leave tomorrow at "o dark hundred" as Kim says. I think we have to leave at 6:30 a.m. and NO later. I'll be up at 6:00 and ready at 6:30 a.m. Low maintenance!! Tomorrow I'll start taking pics and uploading to this blog. We fly to Cairo and should get to the hotel around 5:00 p.m. We have lots of reading material ... all the do's and dont's of traveling in that part of the world. Wendy is worried about Kim's hair .... [View Full Entry]
