We arrived at the train station to find our hotel directly accross the road about 100mt up. We read te reviews whcih advised us that it was in red light district! It was too! Fancy that.................. It wasnt intimidating but there were lots of unsavoury characters trolling the streets amongst the numerous reputable cafe's. We dropped our bags and took a walk looking for a good place to eat and settled with Kakadu the Aussie eatery........... Richard ordered a Crown Lager but they didnt have any or any VB so was convinced to try the German beer. We sat outside and really enjoyed the atmosphere. Next day we started out late to look for breakfast and ended shopping with Imeldo buying yet again another pair of shoes!! We will have to buy another suitcase just for ... read more

Amy started feeling a little weird last night but today was officially down for the count - wicked sore throat, stomach pain, and achy bones. She slept for almost 24 hours and had to break out the old remedies - drinking hot tea and gargling salt water. Everyone one else needed a day of rest too, so it worked out okay. Did laundry, read books, watched it rain, caught up on the blog. Tomorrow we’re going to take it easy as well until we’re all back to fighting strength. Happy Father’s Day to Amy’s Dad, Randy, and hope all of you Fathers out there had a great day. Since there are no pictures today. You can learn some German words. Tscheuss (Chuuuuussss in a kind of high voice) is Goodbye or See you. Geburtstag is birthday. ... read more

Today was outdoor adventure day. Osse, Britta, Karin, Roland, Peggie, Jerry, Amy, and Brian (and Millie!) drove about an hour to Altenglan for a “Draisinentour”. We picked up “draisinen”, 4-man railway cars equipped with two sets of pedals and room for 2 more passengers. We chained them together and took off. The old training tracks led through the countryside and through small towns. The route was 40 kilometers (about 25 miles), and we made several stops along the way to take a break. We took turns pedaling so everybody had a chance to get some exercise and Millie was a perfect passenger. See videos. Poor Jerry’s behind ( his “hintern”) took a beating. Peggie sat up front and gave the signal to stop whenever we came to a road crossing. Brian tried to show his Mom ... read more

Today was a quiet day because tomorrow is the big birthday part for Aunt Eva and we need to rest up. We went for our regular short morning walk and took a ride to visit Brian’s cousin, Karin and her husband Roland. Their home is beautiful and they made us a fresh asparagus salad. We came right at the time of year for fresh white asparagus which is awesome. With some great ham and egg in the salad and some crusty bread and wine, it's gourmet fare. Their cat, Leah, was a prrrrfect host. We've been finding black cats everywhere we go but they haven't been "crossing our path" so no bad luck (we hope). We're going with the theory that if they let you pet them and purr, it cancels out the superstition. After lunch, ... read more

Tuesday, June 16th: We got up early to start the day - Brian and Jerry went for a run and Amy went for a nice walk. We found the bakery but resisted as we knew breakfast was waiting. Good bread, liverwurst, ham, salami - breakfast of champions - can’t beat that to kick off some sight-seeing. Around lunch, Osse was nice enough to take us for a drive through the wine country - lots of vineyards and even some white asparagus farms. We went to the ruins in Burg Neuleiningen. The overlook lets you look out across the wine country. Then we were off to Freinsheim where the town is surrounded by a stone wall. Brian and Amy went for the walk around the wall path while Peggie, Jerry and Osse lounged in a lovely café. ... read more

Monday, June 15th: We arrived in Frankfurt around lunch time on Monday. We were greeted at the airport by Brian’s cousins, Karin and Roland, who were very nice to drive us to Aunt Eva’s in Ludwigshafen. We saw German rain for the first time. Here are some pictures of the family and Eva’s garden and one of Amy so you can all see her new hair. This is for those of you who never recognize her (you know who you are, Mike Neer!). It’s kind of a demented red-headed Cleopatra look. In fact Jerry is calling her, “Cleo.” This haircut, too, shall pass. Everyone decided to take a little nap and we decided to walk around and explore. This was how we got lost the last time we visited years ago so we decided to be ... read more

Sunday, June 14th: We’re off on another trip - this time to Germany. All started well as we headed to the airport in the evening. The dogs and cat (Griffin, Skye and Dixie) were all safe and sound with a Pet Sitter room-mate back home. Brian grabbed some running shoes on the way to the airport (really hideous silver, orange and blue - Florida Gator colors! - what do you expect from 15 minutes shopping). He said we’ll have to run and exercise to cancel out all the great German food we’ll be eating. We got to the airport in plenty of time and that was a good thing - United had some real process problems with international check in - Brian had to tell Amy to MYOB because she wanted to jump in and try ... read more

Hi there interested beings. Like many of you I have been waiting in frustration for news from the well known bumbler, Roscoe, christened for the purpose of this blog as Arvey Bee (aka RVB, Bickers, Roscoe, Bones, Chopper - feel free to let me know if there are other aliases). Because he can be so difficult to track, and because his whereabouts may be of importance to some of you, I have decided to create a blog on his behalf. This is modeled on a 1990's old computer game, a favourite of Arvey's when he was but a budding sleuth. The game was called Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego and I believe Arvey may be using game as a travel guide. Here is the story so far: 10th June 2009 * Arvey has nominated ... read more

Wow, so much has happened since the last update that I dont even really know what to say or how to fit it all in here. Since I last wrote, we have been to been to Cinque Terra, Rome, and are now back in Frankfurt enjoying the last day of the most amazing trip ever. Again, the moping is back, as I am not happy to be leaving Europe, but I suppose all good things must come to an end (if it came to an end about 3 weeks later though, that would be ok with me) So Ill try and just give a quick update. After a day of travels, we made it to Cinque Terra, Italy. It is seriously the most beautiful place I have ever seen in my entire life. It consists of ... read more
