Friday, Germany Day 2 First, we really aren't in Frankfurt ... we're in Rodgau, but just a 30 minute train ride to Frankfurt. No rest for the wicked!!! We’re out of the house at 7:45. Breakfast was served at the pow wow grounds. We get the eat free!!! Now that’s a good thing for a bunch of Indians!!! We were served the typical German breakfast: bread, cold cuts, cheese, butter, something like Miracle Whip. And coffee. The coffee was good. And, hey, it was free!!! After breakfast, we went to work setting up many canopies that belong to Tdom Bah. I raised my hand and used the “elder card,” so I snuck off to a quiet spot and typed. Had to get that Germany Day 1 done. We went back to the house in the afternoon ... read more

I know this last update is late, but to my defense every time I start working on it I just choke up and can’t finish. I just didn’t want it to end. Lori wakes up before me and wakes me up. Get up and let’s get going, I want to get to the airport before anyone else does. You know first come first serve, right! Oh yeah… I said, we’ll get to the gate and wait until they call our names. I immediately run for the bathroom to avoid any question about if we’re going to get on the plane. I finished shaving and getting my stuff together; I’m heading out the door and yelled I’ll be down stairs having breakfast. Lori shows up in about 20 minutes, I had just finished checking the counts on ... read more

What are you looking for ? Getting a Schengen Visa was as tight as a Muay Thai fight ! Several follow-ups, written explanations, phone calls and documents later, we finally got that shiny sticker pasted on our passports. And, it almost got ripped off !..How ? ...Read on.... The Kolkata airport interiors at night is a dream come true for insomniacs. Dimmed lights (not intentional but due to the dust accumulated), soft and soothing music (again, they might be playing Techno, but then - the dust on the speakers makes it sound like a Yanni masterpiece), very scary policemen with very medieval riffles, and last but not the least, the proud office bearers at the immigration counters - very annoyed with their night shifts, and very annoyed because you're flying at an odd hour ! ... read more

Flying to Frankfurt I've never been to Germany before. Might have flown over the territory on my previous trips to the UK, but never really stepped on German soil. This time, we had to catch a train from Frankfurt on our way to Basel, Switzerland. We flew Air India this time. This was my first tryst with the national carrier. Not that they grossly disappointed, but then I was mentally prepared for some motherly care, knowing that this airline simply refuses to retire its fleet of air-hostesses ! I think their aircrafts are much younger and fitter ! We had to connect via Delhi, and I must say the airline did a fair job in keeping all the passengers in their respective corners at the Delhi Airport. The Flight from Kolkata to Delhi carried some ... read more

There has been a serious delay in posting this entry. This was due to lack of high-speed access for the last few days and a busy schedule to Toronto and back and to Toronto again to see Adele's final show at Randolph Academy for the Performing Arts and to attend her graduation ceremony. More about that later. First though, the flight home. Our flight from Amsterdam to Frankfurt was short and sweet. When we got to the gate in Frankfurt we were directed to see an agent regarding our tickets. Turns out our seats were sold and they had to issue us different tickets. Originally Lenora and I were not sitting together so Lenora asked if we were together now with these new tickets. Well, the lady said, sort of -- you are across from one ... read more

We had an early breakfast at 6am so we could catch the airport shuttle back to Frankfurt at 7am. It's a good thing we left early, because traffic was at a standstill around the city. Still got to the airport in plenty of time. Peggie and Jerry had to wait much longer since their flight was later in the day. We're sure our driver was trying to be helpful, but he sent us to the wrong place. We asked several times but he kept telling us that United was in Terminal 2. We still had a weird feeling as we dropped off P&J at Terminal 1 for Lufthansa. United and Lufthansa are partners so it seemed strange but away we went. We walked and didn't see it. Then we asked and they sent us to the ... read more

Brian and Amy went for a run/walk and had some breakfast with Peggie, Jerry, and Eva in the morning. Amy's gone back to healthy oatmeal for breakfast but it's hard to turn down "brotchen" (great crusty rolls)", cheese and salami. Brian's weakness is the liverwurst on black bread. Plus, sometimes, there is "speck" (bacon) - bacon is gooood. We better walk more. After yesterday’s bike to ride to Frankenthal to pick up more Euros, today we returned to Frankenthal to spend them! We all loaded up into Eva’s car and she drove us to town for some shopping. She dropped us off in the center of the city and we fanned out to find some bargains. Since the dollar is not very strong, most things were a little expensive and we’re really sorry we can’t easily ... read more

Amy on the mend - Hurrah! We got up early to go for a run (for Brian) and a walk (for Amy). Then, in the afternoon, we biked to Frankenthal in search of the magical Deutsche bank ATM which gives us money for no fees. We got there, had great maps and knew EXACTLY where we were. The problem is we didn’t know exactly where the Bank was. We “phoned a friend” and found out that the “Colleen Deal Google Search Helpline is equal to the “John Kriz Map and Direction Service” which was closed for the moment. Thanks for the save! We explored around the shops and town and had a three scoop gelati - canceled out the exercise of the ride completely. Then we cycled back to Edigheim, which is where Aunt Eva is, ... read more

Amy’s started to come back to life a little. Today she had a mid-day massage in the close-by spa town with both hot and cold stones. We’re hoping this chases the last of the germs away. While Amy relaxed, Brian, Peggie, and Jerry walked around Bad Durkheim. After Amy was finished, Karin picked us all up and we drove to the historic town of Speyer. The town was the home of German Emperors with some of the earliest architecture dating to the 1200s. Karin, Brian, Peggie and Jerry walked around the town, while Amy stayed at a café both to rest and to do work . You know she’s feeling better when the computer and phone come out! She got to talk to a lot of the gang - John, Greg, Barb, Christine and Ron so ... read more

Boy, the Germ in Germany isn't fooling around. Amy still feeling "mir ist schlecht" - that means like crap. When she wants her Mom to bring her ginger ale and crackers, you know it’s serious. Aunt Eva found some magical meds that Amy started taking today and by the afternoon some of the fever and flu seems to be fading. She actually got up and moved around. Now it’s just a cold so we might be back in the game tomorrow. We managed to all go out to Dinner in Frankenthal with Brian’s cousin, Uli. We ate at a very small restaurant where the family goes - a mix of Tapas and Spanish with a German twist was interesting and aioli is good in any country. ... read more
