Today was yet another great day! Morning dive was to Calvin's Crack (another fav. among all Roatan divers) . . . absolutely gorgeous site! Followed by the usual dropoff dive to the Prince Albert Wreck in CocoView's Front Yard. The afternoon dive trip was personal - - - just the four of us and the captain and divemaster aboard for a "private trip"....nice and relaxing. On the way in Todd and I had the opportunity of watching a Yellow Headed Jawfish swirling eggs in his mouth. (the male carries the eggs until they hatch, spitting them out every so often to keep them the right temp. and all that jazz) - very unique! Sorry the blogs are short . . . my mind is still elsewhere! Hope the pictures tell a little! Oh - - - ... read more

Today made the trip! PILOT WHALES EVERYWHERE!!! Today was an early day - Todd and I woke up to do a dawn dive at 6am, followed by a quick bite to eat and then off to the dive boat for a day we'll never forget! The dive was good (as are all the dives here), but our surface interval this morning couldn't be beat! We were greeted by a pod of Pilot Whales. We donned our snorkel gear and went for a swim with these awesome gentle giants. The pod started out small - 3 adults and a smaller one, which eventually grew to 11 total! It was absolutely unbelieveable . . . a once in a lifetime opportunity we had the pleasure of sharing! Besides the pilot whales that made the day, as well as ... read more

After an action packed night in Miami at the Cirque de Soleil show "Corteo" (which was fantastic!) and no sleep ~ off to the Miami airport we went . . . and we're finally here in paradise! (went to do a blog yesterday but the server was down =( Yesterday was relaxation day - - - a nap (or two) in the hammock followed by a meet and greet with other CocoNuts. Saturday night was mellow. Rain was in the forecast and things were starting to look dull, but . . . Today (Sunday) was a different story! The morning brought a passing shower, but the sun came shining through and it was a great day! (The sunset was beautiful too!) Today was all about diving! It went breakfast, dive, dive, lunch, siesta, dive, dive, drinks ... read more

Our next port of call was the beautiful Isle Roatan, Honduras. Forty miles off the coast of Honduras this is one of the newer ports in Central America. Also, according to our cruise director it is the least developed of the ports in Central America. My beautiful bride and I had booked a tour through a local tour guide and needed to be the ship fairly early to make our tour. Our new friends had decided that they would come with us. We were excited to have people we know joining us for the tour. At 6:30 Am our wake up call came and we readied ourselves for the day’s activities. We could see the port out of our window and we watched the people in the port getting ready for our arrival. At 8:00 AM ... read more

The ride from Semuc Champey was an adventure in itself! A collectivo, a vehicle about the size of a large van, is a main source of transportation in Guatemala. With 21 people crammed into it, we started our trip to Xela. The driver could serioulsy enter the Indy 5oo the way he was racing down the windy, bumpy roads, taking corners so fast that the tires were screeching. Even the locals on the collectivo seemed a bit nervous at is driving. The driver must have sensed his passengers apprehensivenss as he turned up the bass in the music to mask the screeching sounds. For about an hour we just held on, trying not to look at the road as our crazed bus driver zipped in and out of cars and music almost deafened us. A couple ... read more

I’d considered going diving today. But I’ve just been getting so tired so easily. And while I find diving to be mentally rejuvenating, physically it drains me. And as much as I love it, the more I plan my trip to South Africa, the more aware I am that I need to keep saving my money. So I decided against diving. Instead, I decided to make a day at the beach. Even with the cost to the taxi, it’s not that expensive and totally worth it. I had myself a nice sleep in. Got ready to go. Took a taxi. And there I was. On the island of Roatan, off the coast of Honduras. At West Bay Beach. Lying on the soft sand, under the brilliant sunshine. It was such a lovely day. I swam in ... read more

From the coastal town of La Ceiba, Honduras, I caught a $50 ferry over to the Island of Roatan, one of the famous Bay Islands. I traveled over with a new friend from NY, another solo female traveler coming from two months volunteering in El Salvador. We stepped off the ferry and stuck out our thumbs, aiming to catch a ride to the backpacker-tourist side of the island. Five pickup trucks later we arrived in West End (free transport was much better and more interesting than the $20 taxi service offered at the ferry dock). We ended up walking a bit also, with our packs and everything, and added to the fact that some invasive germ was causing my body to react feverishly, by the time we reached the cheapest hostel on the one-road strip, ... read more

After the adventurous journey out of La Moskitia we were originally intending to head to Cayos Cochinos to do some diving and chill out on deserted beaches etc but we couldn't get hold of the resort and so we went to plan B - Roatan. The idea was that we'd spend about 5 days diving here before heading back to La Ceiba for a day trip somewhere and then the trip home. We managed to score what was basically our own appartment with a full on kitchen, which was great because we could cook for ourselves and save some money. The problem, however, was that Laura had developed an ear infection while we were in La Moskitia (probably due to the diving before) and it only ever got worse while we were there. Initially the doctors ... read more

Roatan Island, Honduras Our day started out with a quick breakfast & then up to the top deck to take pictures of our arrival to Honduras. Today the plan was to shop for a bit, come back to shop, then leave on our excursion -- Glass Bottom Kayaking & snorkeling! Am told that Roatan Island is one of the 'richest' in Honduras. By the first block, one could see that it was still very 3rd world. Lots of little wood shacks with no fans or air conditioners, pot holes in the paved roadways, tons of vendors & little bars on the water. Lots of blocky yellow & turquoise buildings with lush trees & plants lined the street-way. We were there first thing in the morning for them (we went by ship-time), so lots of kids were ... read more
