I recently vacationed with my family on Roatan, Bay Islands, Honduras. One of the activities that we were most excited about was fishing for tuna. We've fished in Mexico, Costa Rica, Hawaii, and Alaska, always having an excellent experience even when the fish weren't biting. Not the case with this trip. The first mate spent the bulk of his time on his cell phone conducting personal business instead of taking care of his duties on the boat. Even when he was not on his phone, he didn't have a clue about which tackle to rig and how to rig it. Consequently, we spent a lot of time waiting for the Captain to do the first mate's job for him. When we did get a good sized fish on the line, a poorly manufactured leader failed, allowing ... read more

Current troubles and Central American passions during coups being well known for exploding, my tour group decided to skip going to Copan and get the heck out of Honduras. We were on Utila enjoying some diving and relaxing after sneaking out of the capital, Tegucigalpa, only about an hour before the roads were blockaded. Our tour leader thought he could get us back onto the mainland and to San Pedro Sula and out via a flight to Guatemala City. As the previous night he had stated going to the mainland was NOT a good idea, Corinne and I (a tour member from Switzerland) decided to head for Roatan and fly directly to the good ole U.S. of A. She managed to snag the very last ticket on the Thursday flight. that's what I get for being ... read more

Roatan is probably the most beautiful place I’ve been, it’s everything you’d expect a typical Caribbean island to be. A glorious last stop on my round the world trip (if you don’t count a Miami that is). I’m not much of a beachy holiday kinda girl but I can tell you that Roatan could easily change my mind. I was staying in West Bay, reportedly the most beautiful beach on the island and maybe the best in Honduras. And it certainly looked like it to me. A wide sweeping beach, powder soft white sand and almost always pretty quiet, shady palm trees, warm crystal clear turquoise waters, blue skies, 30°+ heat, a vibrant coral reef just meters from the shoreline (at the end of the beach) alive with tropical fish and a few quiet restaurants and ... read more

Day 795 (03.06.09) to Day 799 (07.06.09) From a choice of two Caribbean islands, which should we go for? It doesn't sound like it should be a difficult decision really does it? And yet it's one we pondered over for some time before finally making a decision an hour or so before we caught the ferry. We had heard that some cheap diving could be had in the Bay Islands of Honduras, and before we made our way back to England and it's murkier, colder waters that we were sure not to want to dive into we wanted to squeeze in one last diving excursion. We could choose from Utila or Roatan but had met no-one who had been to both to help us with our decision. On the one hand we had Utila with supposedly ... read more

From the time I landed at the airport to the low quality expensive fishing and snorkeling tours, not to mention the double charging restauraunts I was not happy with this so called tropical resort. The only place I found true Honduras and excellent food and snorkeing was a little island called Helene off of Roatan. A really nice christian man named Frank took me in and rented me a cozy cabin for a great price and took me spear diving in a homemade canoe. Now this was paradise, this other guy named Darcy showed me around the place. He was like a guide showing me a cool cave with pools of water at the bottom. In this cave Mitchell Hedges found a genuine Crystal Skull! I saw a show on the sci fi channel about Mitchell ... read more

Waking up on Thursday morning left us breathless at the views from the ship. It was unanimous that this was our favorite stop and very beautiful. I had been most looking forward to this stop, and it did not disappoint - after all, it's not often one gets a chance to venture to Honduras! Roatan is a small island with a single ship dock. We were suprised that we did not have to tender into the pier, so it was quick and easy to exit the ship onto dry land. I had read on cruise critic that the way to go at this port was to just hire a guide or taxi for the day and ride around. At $35 a person, this was a deal that couldn't be beat! I had wanted to do a ... read more

On Roatan there are two prices, the local price and the tourist price. This is important the know when going to bars and getting taxis. Sometimes, you are just out of luck. Never take a taxi to West Bay, they will assume you are a tourist staying at one the resorts. I´ve heard stories of people who have paid 10 american for a taxi from West End to West Bay. And of course there are some bars that will only charge the tourist price, but since you can get your drinks to go, its easier to just get a beer at the cheaper bar and then go to a more expensive one. And the bars in West Bay only charge the tourist price, an even more inflated price than in West End actually. But sometimes its ... read more

I always thought tropical islands would be so beautiful. I was right the island itself is beautiful, but food, service and some of the people were quite the opposite. I will write briefly for now. I really would like to get Jose at the passport stamping booth for leaving the country fired. This was the most disrespectful man I have ever met. A couple years ago he would not let my wife ( who is a native of roatan) leave the country without permission from her mom. She is my wife with an american resident green card visa that wouldnt expire for two years. Why would I need her moms permission when her mom signed papers when we got married saying that I was now responsible for her and that she was mine. My wife whom ... read more

Day 102 Had a very early start ready for our 3 flights to Roatan. Tom was obviously looking forward to seeing his old buddies although slightly apprehensive that they might not remember him! When we finally arived on Roatan we jumped on a busy bus that would take us to Punta Gorda which is the village where Tom lived. Amazingly one of his old students was on the bus and remembered him so I think that was a bit of a relief! When we reached our destination at 5pm after over 12 hours travelling we were pretty tired so were keen to find a bed. Mary Lou who did all Toms cooking when he was there hooked us up in one of her friends guest rooms which was actually really nice. Big room, flushing toilet and ... read more
