The last blog for our trip to Honduras via New York and not a very exciting one but I thought I'd shove it in to complete the blog. The final leg of our journey saw us return to Omega jungle lodge in the hope of some white water rafting but as it hadn't rained we opted for another day of horse riding and, as it was our last night in a decent place, stayed in their luxury cabin, which was SO nice. After the horse riding we caught a bus in the afternoon to San Pedro Sula where we stayed the last night in an utterly crap hostel that was highly recommended in the guide book. Since being recommended they've massively upped their prices and cared little for their guests. I can't remember the name but ... read more

After the adventurous journey out of La Moskitia we were originally intending to head to Cayos Cochinos to do some diving and chill out on deserted beaches etc but we couldn't get hold of the resort and so we went to plan B - Roatan. The idea was that we'd spend about 5 days diving here before heading back to La Ceiba for a day trip somewhere and then the trip home. We managed to score what was basically our own appartment with a full on kitchen, which was great because we could cook for ourselves and save some money. The problem, however, was that Laura had developed an ear infection while we were in La Moskitia (probably due to the diving before) and it only ever got worse while we were there. Initially the doctors ... read more

The last thing I want to mention is the journey out of La Moskitia, which is an adventure for sure. We woke up at 3am in the night and kept our eyes peeled for a colectivo boat that would take us for 3hrs part of the way to Batalla. It's pitch dark except when the guy driving the boat switches on his flash light to scan the coast of the lagoon every now and then and everybody stays silent (wishing they were still in bed no doubt). After a little while we realised that our guide was just behind us in the boat - taking his kid into the city to see a doctor - which would come in handy later. At one point there was something very fishy going on as the boat pulled up ... read more

After one night in Bélen we took a short boat ride (we really could have walked but didn't turn down the free lift) to the neighbouring community of Raista - the two communities are basically separated by the airstrip - where we would spend 2 nights and were met by a new guide. Aside from watching thunder storms and shooting stars in Yamari we had the most fun in Raista. Shortly after arriving and dumping our bags in another impressively well built room, this time in a sort of longhouse, we jumped onto a long boat and headed across the lagoon for a guided walk in the forest followed by some tubing down the river! While we didn't get to walk in pristine forest we did get to walk around for a couple of hours in ... read more

Soon enough after returning from Yamari to Brus Laguna we were piled back into a big dugout canoe and were on our way to the second stop - Bélen (Bethlehem). The views along the way were great and we saw all the usual things you might expect like kids swimming and jumping off boats, people doing their washing, people fishing and even a dugout canoe loaded up with cows they had some how persuaded to lie down with their legs in the air so they could be transported. The journey used to involve a potentially dangerous journey out to sea and along the coast but after a few deaths and some nasty hurricanes funds were injected into the local area and the whole community spent something like 220days digging a channel along behind the beach to ... read more

After our day of horse riding the idea was to head into La Moskitia next so that we still had time when we came back to relax for a while on a beach somewhere. There are no roads into La Moskitia and so you have two choices for transport: Fly or go overland by pickup truck and boat (see later). We chose to fly in and overland out. Wed 27th: Having lost the plane tickets we forked out for two more and flew to Brus Laguna, one of the biggest settlements in La Moskitia, on a small twin propeller plane. When we landed in a grass field at the end of a dirt road in the middle of nowhere we instantly knew what kind of a week we were in for, the kind of week we ... read more

On Laura's birthday we left Utila and were picked up on mainland Honduras by Omega Tours, who we'd organised to go horse riding with. Laura had never been horse riding but had always wanted to so we thought we'd take the opportunity and as this company is run by a very respectable German couple with well fed and looked after (but small, as everywhere round here) horses it was a good place to be doing it. When we arrived back on the mainland our lift was nowhere to be seen (confusion over which terminal to be picked up from) so after being tricked by some guy into topping up his phone credit so that I could use his phone I called Omega tours and we were soon on our way sitting comfortably in the back of ... read more

Before I blab on about our trip to Utila in general I'm going to Shamelessly cut to what was by far the highlight of the place for me and one of the most incredible experiences of my life - WHALESHARKS!! I was lucky enough to be in Utila during one of the best times to see these amazing creatures and in between diving, during your surface interval, boats on the north side of the island cruise around looking out for sea birds that might indicate where there is a 'boil' and hence where whale sharks can be found. What happens is that whale sharks sometimes herd schools of small fish (they don't just feed on plankton) into a tight ball at the surface, where the schooling fish jump around making the water looking like it's boiling ... read more

OK, so it's been a while since I've written a blog and I've missed out few blog worthy trips in the last 8months or so to various places including Vancouver/Whistler for my first time skiing and lots of trips to France including another skiing trip and a brilliant road trip around the southwest but never mind. Here begins a quick trip to Honduras stopping off in Manhattan, New York for a couple of days on the way out. Day 1 of this 3.5week jaunt saw myself and Laura up and about at stupid o'clock on my birthday to catch a ridiculously early flight to the "big apple". Fortunately, given that we were flying back a few time zones, I still managed to have a decent chunk of the day to enjoy for my birthday when we ... read more

From Tikal I jumped on a tourist shuttle across the border to Belize, where I then caught several different local buses to get to Sitee River. Before I entered Belize I wasn't really sure what to expect. I here very different things from peoples experiences, with some people loving it and others thinking very little of the place. Even just for the language I didn't really know what to expect, despite the official language being English. When I jumped onto my first local bus I was even more confused. I knew that, aside from English, Creole was spoken a lot and Spanish in many places too (there are also other languages spoken in places). Creole I had been told was kinda broken English and so I half expected to understand it. However, on the bus (where ... read more
