Visiting Manuel Antonio National Park is a highly recommended trip in Costa Rica. In all we spent 3 days in the area. We stayed in Quepos, which is an interesting, basic, low profile Costa Rican town with a mixture of tourists and locals – at the Wide Mouth Frog Backpackers – again, highly recommend this hostel! Two days we took the bus over the giant hill to Manual Antonio township. The first, we visited the National Park. Note here, the park is closed on Mondays and it does get very busy with locals hitting the beach on the weekend. We opted not to do a tour as we felt pretty comfortable spotting wildlife ourselves. We were handsomely rewarded! On the track to the waterfall, we stumbled across a Howler Monkey feeding on fruit in the canopy ... read more

So in some ways you could say we are still living for the weekend... while we are definitely enjoying the volunteer work, the daily commute (which is new to us!) takes its toll and this weekend we decided to escape from the city for a needed break. Along with 12 other Maximo Nivel volunteers (and our fearless driver, Leo) we piled into a microbus on Friday afternoon for the 3 hour trip to Manuel Antonio, which came highly recommended by pretty much everyone we have met! After checking into our hotel (Costa Verde) and having dinner, all 14 of us set out in search of the beach. By the light of the full moon (and some help from the iphone light app ;) we managed to find our way down a steep hill, across a mushy ... read more

Our trip from San Jose to La Fortuna was uneventful. We took a bus from San Jose to San Carlos and then continued on to La Fortuna at the base of Volcano Arenal, both trips were about 2 hours for a total of 4 hours on the bus. As we arrived the imposing Arenal looked over the city and created an easy marker for navigation for our time in La Fortuna. We knew before we arrived that we wanted to take a guided tour of Arenal and the surrounding area and possibly include a visit to the hot springs in our tour. Upon our arrival we were greeted at the bus station by some people wanting us to stay at their hotel. Due to the recession and the rainy season tourism is pretty depressed in all ... read more

As we were going to stick around in both Quepos and Manuel Antonio National Park for 4 nights, we decided to get a half decent place to stay that was in-between the two of them (they are about 7km apart from each other). Mimos Hotel was where we had pre-booked to go, and when asked in the reservation form if we had any special requests, we noted that we would love a balcony and a view of the sea if it was at all possible. What we didn’t realise until our reservation email was replied to, was that Mimo’s didn’t have a sea view! Not only was it about a kilometre from the sea, but there was also half a rainforest in front of the hotel stopping us from admiring the sea vista as well! This ... read more

Well we went to the restaurant Hicaco, in Jaco, to find that it was closed. So we headed to a restaurant in Herradura beach, called El Pelicano. Not only did I have the best seared yellow tail tuna I had every had, I also had a few of the best piña coladas ever made! Our dinner was delicious and we enjoyed the sunset right over the water. Yesterday could not have gotten any better! My dad and I rented a car and drove down to Manuel Antonio National Park. We went on a tour with a man named William, who was incredibly knowledgeable about all of the different animals in the park. He also had the unbelievable ability to spot insects and camouflaged animals that we would have never seen with our untrained eyes. After a ... read more

Hello! Long time, no talk. This week was my first week of classes! Well lets just say i didn't get much out of my classes and by that I mean I didn't really know what was going on in my three classes with fast talking Costa Rican teachers, confusing syllabus, and other costa rican students. Let me paint you a picture... I meet my friend Brandon to walk to our first tico class, we get there kind of late so we have to sit on the front row.. awesome. There are like six other US students from my group in the class too but the room is mostly full of other Costa Rican students. The professor finally arrives and says that there is too many people here and goes back to get the role to see ... read more

After spending another Monday night with the Jaco locals at Tabacon in which a good hour of the night was spent looking for a lost mojo I woke up later than I'd hoped. The plan was to go to Manuel Antonio National Park today. I caught the chicken bus at 9.30 with quite a number of gringos and then enjoyed some added 'rest' time. The park is good hour and a half from Jaco, but a beautiful day trip. It is quite small however there are three different beaches throughout the park and heaps of wildlife in which to cast your eyes. I was lucky enough to see two sloths, hundreds of monkeys and just about as many iguana's. The beach was my home for a couple of hours..I'm sure you know whats coming next...I swam, ... read more

Our Villa We have a 2 bedroom villa overlooking the ocean. It is a far steep walk (one we haven't attempted yet) down to the ocean- they provide shuttle service. We are at the top of the property so great overlooking views. We are close to some restaurants outside the property, grocery store and a quaint coffee shop. At the beach there is one restaurant which serves breakfast and lunch. They have good food here and the beer is Imperial- but reminds me of Canadian so not my fave! There are 3 pools as well- all a fun walk to find! Beautiful property and lanscape. Monkeys in the trees outside the room and down at the Ocean front restaurant as we showed yesterday. There are tons of lizards and Iguanas all around. I am still a ... read more

So I woke up pretty early today, went outside for a little bit and then came back in and fell asleep for a little longer. It was supposed to be stormy today, but it was pretty sunny out in the morning. We went over to the hotel restaurant again (arroz con pollo again… delicious!!!) and had lunch and relaxed. There were the small monkeys all around the area (including outside our room) and we went and hung out with them for a little bit :) They were eating coconut from people and they were SOOOOO cute! I want one!We went out to walk on the beach again and spent a lot of time down there because hey, why not! We were heading back but decided to go look for some jewelry at the vendors shops. IN MANUEL ANTONIO!!!! It took a ridiculously long shuttle ride to get here, but we made it and it is beautiful! We woke up at about 6am and the shuttle was supposed to pick us up at 7am, but it was late. By the time it had driven around to pick everyone up we were an hour behind. Then when we finally got on the road, we had been driving for only an hour and a lady realized that she was on the wrong bus. We were going to the Pacific side and she was supposed to be going to the Caribbean side. So, after much arguing and delay, we drove back about 10 minutes and dropped her off at a little restaurant for another shuttle to pick her up. Once we got to Manuel Antonio ... read more
