Background: Costa Rica is a Central American success story: since the late 19th century, only two brief periods of violence have marred its democratic development. Although still a largely agricultural country, it has expanded its economy to include strong technology and tourism sectors. The standard of living is relatively high. Land ownership is widespread.

we made it down the mountains, back to the sun and beach where we belong. we´re staying in quepos...dirty little town...we got eaten by ants in our bed last night!! not to worry though, we switched hotels this morning and tonight should be much better. we went to manuel antonio national park today and did lots of hiking. we saw lots of monkeys, huge lizards, and bright orange crabs living in the middle of the rain forest! we also roasted on the beach for a while...so nice. chad lost his sunglasses...again...and found them...again. lucky man. we´re going to stay here for [View Full Entry]

Manuel Antonio is a perfect place to get your fill of both beach and rain forest. It's definitely touristy, but it also maintains that small beach town feel. A little bit of everything...I loved it! We went 3 weekends ago so this entry is coming rather late, but I'll see what I can muster up from my memory. The bridge over a river leading into Quepos, the town next to Manuel Antonio, was damaged so we were delayed for a few hours while cars went across 1 by 1. We couldn't even walk across the mere 40-foot wide river because [View Full Entry]

We were in the mood for a little adventure, so we decided to descend upon the least developed area of Costa Rica, the Oso Peninsula. Just before we left Panama we learned of a place called Bolita on the Oso Peninsula near Puerto Jimenez. This magical paradise requires a stunning, steep hike up from a nearby town to Bolita during which you traverse a small river a couple of times. The hike is not too tough, but with a heavy pack on it was a bit trying. Essentially, Bolita is a cabin in the middle of the jungle with about [View Full Entry]

After Lake Arenal our destination was the coast, Manuel Antonio. It was a 5 hour drive from Arenal to Manuel Antonio, but due to traffic and stops it took us ~7 hours. We stopped at a crocodile viewing area (bridge that crosses the Tarcoles River). Below the bridge we were able to see vicious looking crocodiles. Dan was nice enough to carry Grayson across the bridge. The bridge has a skinny walkway across, missing railings, and speedy oncoming traffic. We were a little uneasy walking the bridge, but not necessarily because of the above, but rather because there were gigantic [View Full Entry]

Tuesday, March 13, 2007 Oh, dumb reality Travel is sort of like a drug for me because I let it be an escape from all the craziness (namely life decisions and General Chemistry) that drowns me when I'm at home. Unfortunately I've unwillingly had to dunk myself back into the madness. In order to maintain some traces of the "drug," here is a short summary of our other adventures: We had a fantastic stay on the Nicoya Peninsula surfing, lounging in hammocks, eating wonderful food, walking on the beach, chilling with the expats, and playing Rook. We also visited some [View Full Entry]

This was the start of the guided walk. Mauricio was explaining some of the areas and where he hoped to find animals.
We decided it was finally time to see the park. We hired a guide so we'd actually have a chance to see some animals. Our guides name was Mauricio, and he knew his stuff. He also had a really nice telescope that gave us great views of the animals and some good pics too. That said, it was pretty freakin expensive for a 3 hr tour. Here are some photos from the walk. Hasta luego... [View Full Entry]

I think it had about a 9 ft wingspan, but everything look bigger and closer underwater so I could be wrong.
Tuesday morning I went diving with Jaime. He is getting his DiveMaster certification as well as taking Spanish classes. It had been almost 4 years since my last dive so I took a refresher course that reviewed some theory and had a practical in a hotel pool. That was actually Wed and Thurs the previous week, but the dive wasn't till Tuesday. Not a whole lot to say about the dive. It was fun to be underwater again. Visibility was okay, and the swell wasn't too bad. We did two dives, about 45 minutes each, with 45 of surface time between. [View Full Entry]
