Background: Costa Rica is a Central American success story: since the late 19th century, only two brief periods of violence have marred its democratic development. Although still a largely agricultural country, it has expanded its economy to include strong technology and tourism sectors. The standard of living is relatively high. Land ownership is widespread.

A couple days I was diving with Trudie, an Open Water student, at the Aquarium just off the coast fo the Manuel Antonio National Park. We were nearing the end of our dive and I noticed out the corner of my eye an unusual movement on the sea bed. It looked like a sizable rock about a foot in diameter was moving up and down. I got closer and peered underneath the rock and there was a mesh of legs and suckers, but what was it and what was it doing?! I signaled to Trudie to have a look, and we [View Full Entry]

Costa Rica, famous for sportfishing and diving in coco island. Recently it came to us via various fisherman, news of an offshore pinnacle. Finally i got a couple of friends together, got a boat and headed out there. 26 miles offshore. At a depth of 95ft at its shallowest point surrounded by sand at a depth of 130 - 140 ft " veinteseis" is no easy dive. We loaded up with ponies and dropped anchor. The current was ripping so when we did drop a rapid ascent was made. Once past 30ft the current prettty much dropped to nothing. All i [View Full Entry]

Manuel Antonio National Park
One of Costa Rica's better known beaches
Day 8. High humidity. Bottled water and sun block in hand, we load up the bus and head south to Manuel Antonio National Park, one of Costa Rica’s better known beaches. The drive over is an adventure in itself. Roads are narrow and pockmarked. As we drive over one-lane bridges, the wooden beds bounce and shudder. As some tour members settle on the beach, a few of us take off for a hike thru the forest. It’s a beautiful, sunny day. Not a whisper of rain. Instead, within a few feet of beginning the hike, we are soaked. Drenched in sweat. [View Full Entry]

Jenny stoked to wait in the airport another couple hours
So much for a romantic getaway where you forget all your problems and just relax. Yesterday was one of the most harrowing days of both our lives. After having to kill three hours in an LAX terminal that had all services closed, a very long 5 hour red-eye, a completely and unnecessary cab ride and another three hour wait in the Coca Cola bus station, which looks like parts of LA (if LA was in hell), we finally boarded our bus for Manuel Antonio thinking all of our tribulations were behind us. However, Cosat Rica's highway 1 had other ideas. Our supposed [View Full Entry]

We woke up fairly early today so that we could spend a little more time in Manuel Antonio before we had to leave to Alajuela. As we were getting ready to go upstairs to have another wonderful breakfast, the obnoxious girl next door comes back and is screaming “Buenos Dias!!!” into our room with probably the worst accent I have ever heard. You can imagine we got out of there really quickly. We enjoyed another breakfast with Elena and then she snuck us upstairs to the see the view of the entire place from Anita’s balcony. It was so gorgeous. The [View Full Entry]

We woke up a couple times during the night because there was an insane rainforest thunder storm beating down on us. Extremely loud thunder, pouring rain, really close lightening, and all that jazz. It continued on trough the early morning, so we decided to sleep in a bit more because the park would have been muddy and difficult to trek through if we had arrived there at the initial time we were going to. Once we finally got up, we went to Anita’s house just a few steps away to have breakfast. It was honestly the best breakfast we’ve had in [View Full Entry]

After a “crazy” night on the town, we woke up to the beating rain of an insane thunder storm, so much for our hike. We decided to sleep in instead of trekking through the rain to see crocodiles and turtles. I was pretty sad about the turtles because we haven’t seen one yet. We finally got a full nights rest thanks to that lovely storm. When we eventually got out of bed, it was sunny and absolutely beautiful. We put our suits on and sat out for the last time on the black sand beach. A bunch of surfers were out [View Full Entry]

Not a bad view . . . but we had to work to get here.
Thanks for your patience with our previous Spanish message .... now the English version! After our long 4 day week of classes, we headed to the coast! We left Friday morning, bright and early at 6am with Val and Eric. It really wasn´t a problem getting up since the rooster is helping us with that! We took a public bus leaving from San Jose and it took about 3.5 hours to get there. Again, glad we took dramamine, the route was incredibly curvy and bumpy, but pretty - the vistas are so amazing!!! Vale la pena! Once we got there, [View Full Entry]
