Waking up on the morning of my Birthday is usually a fairly unpleasant affair due to the inevitable hangover from the previous night’s celebrating or, more recently commiserating. This birthday was no different in that waking up was indeed unpleasant, however this time the reason wasn’t a hangover, but because I had woken up on a bus. This unfortunately isn’t a crazy anecdote of me getting hammered the day before my birthday and somehow ending up on a bus going somewhere I had never heard of. No, I was on a bus purposely and fully aware of my actions in order to get to Bariloche in Argentina. We had come from Colonia again in Uruguay after having spent one more night there, and was currently making our way to our destination via a 24 hour bus ... read more

It had been over three months since we had felt sand between our toes and could cool off by dipping into the sea, and so we decided it was time to once again hit the beach. Now that we were in Uruguay, we knew that there were plenty of places we could go up the coast, and that the weather would still be fairly warm wherever we went, however the place that we really liked the sound of was Punta Del Diablo (Devils Point) We were drawn to this South American beach town for several reasons really; the promise of a laid back surfer town, no high-rise hotels, no ‘Mega clubs’ and a fantastic beach to boot. Plus, in case we needed persuading any more, our friends Troy and Kylie also happened to be visiting here ... read more

Once back in BA, we had a little over 2 weeks until our friend Louise from home was due to meet us, and therefore we decided to split this time into two parts. Week 1 would be spent in Uruguay and week 2 in Bariloche, back in Argentina. The fact that we could get to Uruguay in around an hour was draw enough for us, but the warmer weather in this part of the world when comparing it to Southern Argentina was the clincher, and so we headed north to a small town called Colonia. In order to get to Colonia, it seemed the best way was to make the short journey over the water in one of the frequent taxi ferries leaving from BA’s port. When we arrived at the ticket desk we asked which ... read more

After a whirlwind two weeks we was back in Buenos Aires sitting in the same café we had sat in two weeks ago, reflecting over what an amazing time we had all just had and thinking how sad it would be to see Matt leave the next morning. However, we did not want to be to downhearted as we still had a good few hours left of this sunny Saturday afternoon and a whole evening to enjoy with one final steak and bottle(s) of wine. We had decided to take a trip on the very touristy sightseeing bus, thinking this would be the best way to see the rest of the city in just a few hours. Unfortunately this was not possible due to an insane booking system, you could not jump on and off at ... read more

Whilst in Mendoza, it seemed there was actually more to do here than just drink wine and hang out (although this was fine by us), when we noticed a sign for white water rafting. Having done it a few times before and thoroughly enjoying it, Donna and I were keen to try it again, and so to was Matt having never been before, we saw this as an opportunity to get out of the city, and have some outdoor fun together. So, we booked it all up and before we knew it we were being fitted for our safety gear and being giving paddles. A fairly short but deliberate safety talk followed, and we were suddenly thrust into the raft. The weather wasn’t the greatest that day, and it was in fact a little cold, however ... read more

Mendoza was a place that we had all looked forward to since arriving in Argentina. Everyone we spoke to seemed to love the place, and it of course had the lure of fantastic wine at a decent price….what’s not to love! On arrival, we decided to have our standard walk around the place to get a feel for it and ended up cruising the pretty streets of Mendoza as well as visiting their huge main plaza. It was on said walk that we realised just how big the wine culture is here, when we saw a huge McDonalds billboard advertising a burger meal alongside a nice looking half bottle of Malbec! After the walk we treated ourselves to a cheeky beer before dinner which naturally turned into a few more. This went on until the point ... read more

After a 24 hour bus journey from Iguazu, we finally reached Salta. The bus journey was actually pretty smooth and we all came out of it having had a good sleep and feeling pretty chipper. We made our way to the hostel that we had pre booked and managed to get in our room as soon as we arrived even though it was early in the morning, this meant we could get sorted and head straight out. The hostel itself was a weird one in its layout, and it wasn’t the nicest or biggest dorm room we have ever stayed in, however it would only be for a night, so we couldn’t really complain. The first thing we wanted to do was get on the cable car that takes you a fair height up one of ... read more

After having seen Iguazu falls from the Argentinian side, I was ever so slightly sceptical as to what the experience would be like from the Brazilian side. Most people you speak to will tell you that the Argentinian side is better and others tell you to not even bother with the Brazilian side. For us though, this seemed ridiculous, as how can seeing those falls again be a disappointment? I just hoped we would see enough difference in the Brazilian side to warrant the trip over the border. Either way though, we would get a day out, be able to see the falls from all the possible view points, plus, we would get to head into Brazil for the day. Bit of a no brainer really! Before we got to see the falls though, we needed ... read more

Introducing Matt to his first 18 hour bus drive wasn’t something we were looking forward to. We had done a few of these ourselves in the past few months and were therefore almost immune to them, but how would Matt react? Answer…. Like he had been doing them for years. This was a huge bonus as we had several more of these to come over the coming fortnight, and if we was to see everything we wanted to see, these bus journeys were essential and were going to be frequent. On arrival to the small town of Puerto Iguazu we managed to find ourselves a nice little hostel close to the centre of town with a pool and with a room that hosted 5 people. The 5 bed room was a requirement as although at the ... read more

So, the day was finally upon us when we would get to see a friendly face from home. Donna and I were looking forward to seeing Matt (Donna’s Brother) and so got a taxi down to the airport terminal early doors in order to wait in anticipation for him to land. We had been dropped off at international arrivals and began to wait for his plane to get in. Once the plane had landed, we stood and eagerly waited for Matt to come round the corner of immigration. After a while of waiting, we got a little paranoid as to where he was, and so we checked the screen again to see if the plane had indeed landed on time as we thought it had. This was when we realised that next to Matt’s plane information, ... read more
