Lilaura

Hello loved ones! As most of you know I am about to embark on a life changing experience. I leave this Saturday, August 27th, 2011 for Costa Rica. I am so excited for this upcoming adventure in the jungle, as well as the challenges I will face in my attempts to learn and communicate solely in Spanish. I have no doubt that I will return to the United States evolved in some way, most likely for the better. Anyway, I thought I would create a blog so that I can more easily keep all of you updated on what I'm doing for the next four months. Feel free to send me messages and leave comments!
Pura Vida,
Laura

So before our last group excursion, we decided to do something awesome and hilarious for Nneka. Nneka has become pretty famous among us for her outrageously funny statements. So, the rest of us secretly made t-shirts that said "I Love Nneka" on the front, and then each one of us had a different one of her quotes written on the back. We all wore the shirts Friday morning on our excursion to Volcan Poas and lined up in front of the bus to reveal them to her. She loved it and thought it was both touching and hilarious! On our way to Poas "Don't Stop Believing" came on the radio and we had an epic karaoke sesh which I caught on video :) when we finally arrived at Poas, it was freezing cold and completely fogged ... read more

The day after Thanksgiving, I decided to take advantage of one of my last weekends here in Costa Rica and adventure to Montezuma. Definitely one of the best decisions I've ever made. Helen, Adele, Drew, and I left Friday morning at 5:00am for the 6:00am bus in San Jose, three buses, a ferry, and 6 and half hours later, we arrived in the beautiful town of Montezuma. Before I move on, I have to comment on the final bus ride where a drunk, homeless guy sat on the floor right next to where I was standing (the bus was packed).. He smelled horrible but was hilarious as he pulled out his radio and decided to translate English songs into Spanish. The downside was he kept scootching closer to me, and I was essentially backed into a ... read more

So aunt Cheryl and mom came to visit for a week, and it was awesome! It was so cool to be able to share Costa Rica with my mom, and my experiences and current life with both of them. A friend of Lorena's, Antonio, took me to the airport Wednesday night to pick up the ladies. Dinner was kind of chaotic as I attempted to switch back and forth between speaking English and Spanish. My brain was quite jumbled :) it was fun to have mom and aunt Cheryl stay a night in my home here and really see how I've been living. Thursday morning I went to class as usual, and Lorena took mom and aunt Cheryl around Heredia for the morning which I was told was fun and interesting as they attempted to communicate ... read more

It has been almost a month since I last blogged. Time has been flying by, so sorry I slacked. This post is going to be a combination of two weekends in La Fortuna; one consisting of a few of us staying in Maria's (our program director's) house, and one trip with the whole group and 9 professors from the States who came to tour Sol's Study Abroad program. Maria's house: Nneka, Gina, Anna, Helen, and I took a trip up to Maria's house the first weekend of November. The five of us stayed in a little granny unit next to Maria and her boyfriend's house on a dairy farm!! Maria's boyfriend Jorge Pablo runs the dairy farm with his brother and let's just say I got to experience the best cereal and milk of my life. ... read more

So I ventured to Panama. And I absolutely loved it. Everything went wonderfully except for Wednesday.. a day of travel hell. Adele and I decided to take a trip just the two of us to Panama to see both Bocas Del Toro, and Panama City. We left on Wednesday at 9:00am from Heredia to catch a 10:00am bus in San Jose. Well, there was so much traffic on our way to the bus station that we didn't get there until 3 minutes to 10:00. Adele ran to buy tickets and I ran to the bus to try to delay it, but there was only one seat left and they wouldn't let one of us stand. So our bus left without us. I explained to one of the men working that we had to cross the Panama/Costa ... read more

On October 14th, at 3:30 am, I left with my group for Nicaragua! Because we had to leave so early, some of the girls in our group and I decided to take advantage of Ladies Night and pull an all nighter. We went to La Birreria to see some good old shirtless male dancing, and this time I have pictures to show for it haha. Unfortunately the crowd was a little lame, so we didn't make it until 3:00, instead I went home at one, showered, slept for an hour, and then got picked up to go to the bus station in San Jose. It was a nine hour bus ride to Granada, Nicaragua, but so worth it. Crossing the border was a bit of a pain, but all in all things went well. Maria, our ... read more

I am way over due for an entry, sorry everyone, It's been a busy couple of weeks. On Thursday, October 6th, the majority of our group took off for the Caribbean coast. We left San Jose at 4:00pm and took a four hour bus to Cahuita. We stayed in a very basic, but cool hotel called Cabinas Arrecife just for our first night. Because we arrived to Cahuita fairly late, the only places open to eat were bars so we went to Coco's Bar for a snack, some drinks, and a little dancing. There was a local band that played for a while, my favorite song consisted of the lyrics "rice and beans" over and over haha! And apparently I missed one that consisted of "banana, like it hot, banana, like it cold." Awesome. Cahuita was ... read more

It has been yet another eventful week here in the magical Costa Rica! On Friday I took advantage of a free day and headed to the beach with my friend Helen. We got up at 6:00am and took a two hour bus from San Jose to a beach called Punta Leona, about twenty minutes north of Jaco. When we arrived we found a little place for breakfast called Soda Nimar which had the best gallo pinto and jugo de piña I've had yet! After breakfast we called a cab to drive us to the beach and we ended up venturing through this gorgeous jungle on a little dirt road and winding up at this small, pretty much empty beach called Playa Blanca. It wasn't the beach we had intended to visit but we were pleased with ... read more

It has been a busy, yet fun filled weekend. Besides adventuring down the Pacuare River and exploring some of San Jose with friends, I got to see my first volcano on Sunday with my familia tica. Lorena, her daughter Irina, and Irina's husband Moasir, and I ventured to Volcan Irazú. This volcano is the tallest in Costa Rica, and last erupted in the sixties. In the base of the main crater was a bright emerald green liquid that continued to change colors from green to brown and back to green, due to the chemicals in the volcano. I'm not going to lie... I pictured red hot lava and what not, but I will be seeing other volcanoes while here, and I've been told Arenal indeed has red lava and is still active. It was very cold ... read more

Yesterday I embarked on my first river rafting adventure! Our group left Heredia at 6:00am for the Pacuare River in Limon, on the Caribbean side of the Country. On our way we stopped and had breakfast in this beautiful restaurant overlooking a canyon. The view was one of the best I've seen here yet. After a traditional breakfast of gallo pinto, fruit, and coffee, we headed down a very rocky, windy road toward the Pacuare River. Once we made it there our group divided into two rafts of five. My group included Rachel, Gina, Nneka, and Helen, and our awesome tour guide Luis. We named our team "Guapas con Luis," and of the rafts, ours was definitely the loudest when it came to screaming in the rapids. So far, river rafting is the coolest thing I've ... read more
