Hey hey
Leaving the University of Limerick for a 12 week unpaid leave and heading off to Central America. Sadly it is probablly my last big trip for a while so I plan on making the most of it. Panama to Mexico and everywhere I can fit inbetween. Travelling solo and barely a word of spanish - let the fun begin!!!

North America » Mexico » Yucatán December 9th 2011

Hey hey - well have arrived in Mexico and so has Alan yippee :-) before he arrived by boat from Belieze to Chetumal in Mexico - sniffer dogs and all!! Jumped on a collectivo (local shuttles in Mexico and headed for Playa Del Carmen. A beach resort on the Yucatan coast about an hour south of cancun an what a culture shock. The beach is stunning here but it is basically a holiday resort and the end of backpacking for now. One main strip called 5th Ave so as you can guess lots of American rich tourists, Starbucks, dominos, burger king, MacDonalds and the list goes on. Spent 2 days on the beach and headed north to Cancun to meet Alan. Jam packed 36 hours in Cancun for Alan - arrived at 1am. Following morning we ... read more

Made my way across the Guatemalan border again this time into Belieze. Arrived in belieze city (no longer the capital since a hurricane hattie hit in the 60's and they relocated the capital to Belmopan) anyway not a very nice city so on the boat straight to Caye Caulker a little paradise island off the coast. It's a really chilled out island full of the Garifuna people who are decendants of the west African slaves originally brought to central America. They are a really cool race very chilled out, dreadlocks and listening to reggae music and super friendly speaking African English ( essentially an island full of bob marleys really. I managed to spend the most of a week here sitting at the beach, watching sunsets, exploring the island and not alot else. The island has ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Guatemala » Petén Region » Tikal November 24th 2011

Another border cross and heading north and back into Guatemala - cant seem to get away from this place!! The reason for my re-enty and stopover is to visit Tikal supposedly one of the most spectacular of all the Mayan ruins sites. The Mayan people settled here around 700bc and by 250bc most of it was completed. It sprawls over 30sq kilometres making it way bugger than any of the other sites. As you will see in the pics towering pyramids poke above the jungle canopy some above 60m and most you are allowed to climb. We took a tour from Flores a little island on a lake about 60k away and left at 4.30 in the morning to ensure that first of all it wasn't too hot and second of all there were alot less ... read more

Ruins

Left the island and amazingly made it all the way to Copan. It was another 12 hour boat and bus day bit at least it was only one.  Two nights is all I stayed here but you could easily get sucked in. It's a very pretty town only 10k from the Guatemalan border and alot less touristy than most places I've been. I was surprised considering the Mayan ruins are the main attraction.  Arrived around 7pm and found a hostel straight away and found out the national park is 1k from the town so no tours necessary just a stroll out of town and pay the entrance fee. Armed with all the necessary info I headed for food and a wander around the town.  Next morning I headed to the ruins and they were just stunning. ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Honduras » Bay Islands » Utila November 15th 2011

Well I haven't done alot since I last wrote to be perfectly honest. We did have thee most horrendous journey ever. Left Semuc Champey heading to Rio Dulce expecting the first hour to be difficult again before hitting the main road however 2 hours in we were resigned to the fact that this could take a while. Basically we ended up on a minibus for 6 hours 5 of which the road basically didn't exist!!! At various sections it had been washed away at one side, we were driving around what had been rock slides. There was no surface at all and on a couple of occasions the driver would have to get out and strategically place rocks he was carrying on the bus to make sure we could get through the mud without getting stuck. ... read more

Left the lovely Lago Atitlan and headed back via Antigua to what we have been told is the highlight of Guatemala, a little town called Lankin in order to visit Semuc Champey - and wow were we not disappointed. The 12 hour journey 11 of which were quiet pleasant but the last hour was through a dirt road (road is stretching it a little) in the pitch black bouncing up and down in the back of a minivan which was not made for these roads not that this deterred our driver. Finally we arrived in the dark to a little hostel in the middle of the hills with plenty of charm. Following morning I was totally blown away by the view from our room we really were in the middle of the highlands and it was ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Bahamas November 4th 2011

Hola Said farewell to Antigua and the lovely Cecila my very patient Spanish tutor and 5 of us headed for lake Atitlan(a kiwi, Brit, an American, an isralei and me) and took a 6hour minibus to the lake. 5 hours were perfectly pleasant but the road down to the lake through the mountains was rough and full of potholes.  Arrived in the dark so got a lovely surprise in the morning it was so beautiful. We choose San Pedro town but there ate about 15 others around the lake to choose from.  First day was spent kayaking on the lake followed by  a massive Halloween party being hosted by our hostel (Yo Mammas) which went on till the early hours all back to ours after the pubs kicked us out.  Sunday was a bit of a ... read more

Headed off on my mammoth journey north again. Leaving Granada to Managua from there across the border to hondorus and another cross back out to Elsalvador stopped in San Salvador over night and left again out of Elsalvador and on to Guatemala city which is to be avoided so for me straight to Antigua a beautiful town overlooked by a huge volcano (Pacaya). Not much fun in a two day bus journey with 6 Borders included but arrived safe and sound but very tired. Spent Sunday checking out this beautiful city just walking through the cobbled streets and getting my bearings and also organising the week ahead. 9am Monday morning Spanish school stared for a week. 4 hours a day for five days and what a culture shock. First cause it's back to a routine, second ... read more

El Salvador

Headed off from the Carribean coast onwards to San Jose and as expected it was very rainy as there is alot of rain here at the moment due to some storms in Mexico and the pacific coast in general is a washout. San Jose itself was not very impressive and the rain did not help. The capital cities in general in Central America get very little good press and the three days I spent there it rained for the 72 hours so I am added to the list of people unimpressed by the capital. Even more annoying was that my hostel had a pool but nobody was in it as it was cold and miserable!! So onwards and upwards to cross the border to Nicuragua on an overnight bus. The border as always was highly entertaining. ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Costa Rica October 14th 2011

Left Bocas and headed to the CostaRican border - and what a border crossing it was. First of all on the way we past hundreds of acers of banana plantations and it turns out pretty much every banana we have ever eaten comes from this reigon the biggest employer here is Chiquita and there are also heaps of distribution points for "DelMonte fruits" as well. Ok back to the border crossing, arrived and all you see is this big massive old rickety bridge with a track in the centre for trains, it looks too old to walk across not to mind take a train!! So we got stamped out of panama walked the bridge (most of the time seeing the water below through missing planks) and into CostaRica - 1st border cross done, piece of cake!! ... read more
