Hey hey - well have arrived in Mexico and so has Alan yippee :-) before he arrived by boat from Belieze to Chetumal in Mexico - sniffer dogs and all!! Jumped on a collectivo (local shuttles in Mexico and headed for Playa Del Carmen. A beach resort on the Yucatan coast about an hour south of cancun an what a culture shock. The beach is stunning here but it is basically a holiday resort and the end of backpacking for now. One main strip called 5th Ave so as you can guess lots of American rich tourists, Starbucks, dominos, burger king, MacDonalds and the list goes on. Spent 2 days on the beach and headed north to Cancun to meet Alan.
Jam packed 36 hours in Cancun for Alan - arrived at 1am. Following morning we headed an hour out of cancun to spend the afternoon Ziplining in the jungle -15 lines in total and even managed one upside-down. Followed by about half an hour off roaring in a little corona buggy (Alan driving cause I'm just not that brave) and finally we arrived at our first Cenote (a fresh water sinkhole all over this peninsula - an old huge
cave system) where we both plucked up the courage to jump from a rope swing into the Cenote!!! We arrived back in cancun and headed to the main strip to meet up with 2 friends who I met in Belieze to go to CocoBongo!!!
This is the biggest nightclub in Mexico. I was very sceptical!! Dreading the dance and electronic music and decided to stay 2 hours home by one I was massively surprised. It was $40 entrance and one of the best shows I have ever been to. Free bar till 3.30am and a massive stage over the bar and more like an arena than a club. All the music was popular music from the 60s onwards and dancers all dressed up an lookalikes on stage. They were also doing acrobatics from suspended ropes and jumping from the top to down to the main floor. It was just incredible!! Needless to say we stayed until the free bar ended and headed home. It was worth the $40 for the free bar alone and the show alone.
Following morning it was time to move on and we caught the boat to Isla Mujeres. Alan finally got to relax
seeing as he barely saw the beach in cancun. The water and beaches here are amazing turquoise water and golden beaches. Spent a couple of nights here at the beach and soaking up the atmosphere.
Final destination in the Yucatan was Tulum about four hours south. Here we went to visit the ruins - what makes these ruins special is the location right on a cliff face on the beach. They were beautiful but the ruins themselves were the smallest and most touristic I have visited. We also visited the beach here which was gorgeous and full of kite surfers but mad windy - not exactly relaxing sunbathing. Our last thing was super cool we went snorkelling in two of the Cenotes here.
The first was Casa Cenote which Is shaped liked a boomerang and we snorkelled all the way up to the end and back. This is a special one as it is the last in the series of caves so it is where it joins the sea and as a result it is a mix of fresh and salt water. This also means there is also a mix of both fresh water and salt water fish.
The water was crystal clear and the colours were amazing. Then we moved onto Gran Cenote. This is more traditional as it like walking into a cave/swimming pool. Here it was more about the cave system. We were snorkelling with torches to see deep into the underwater caves and stalagmites and stalactites. This was our favourite it was so cool and we saw turtles - always a treat.
So after a jam packed week we are leaving the Yucatan on a 17hour overnight bus to Chaipas to San Cristobal de las Casas....
