Dave woke us up knocking on the door around 6AM in the morning, I helped him out with what he was looking for then went straight back to sleep. Again, this time around 10:15AM, Dave came knocking on the door and woke us up. But this time we had to get up and meet the rest of the group down at Alexis Park. Due to the fires around California the interstates closed so unlucky for us we had to stay an extra night in this amazing city. We quickly walked down to their hotel because we were in a bit of a rush. They had to check out of Alexis Park because Jon only booked that hotel for two nights. For the last night in Las Vegas Jon luckily found another hotel to stay in which ... read more

Today we got to sleep in which was an extremely rare occasion during trek. Hannah and I spend most of the morning in the Jacuzzi while watching the news about the terrible fires in California. We headed down to get some breakfast in Starbucks soon after and as we returned to our room we bumped into Dave who stayed out in the casino most of the night, he was up thousands of dollars. We got our stuff ready and walked down to the other hotel where we were meeting the rest of the group. We got sick of waiting for Dave and Sara and jumped in the van to leave but as we did we saw them just coming around the corner. We went to have lunch at the famous ‘Luxor” buffet. Hannah was full from ... read more

We woke up and excitedly had breakfast and packed the van. Today we are driving to everyone’s most awaited place, Las Vegas. As soon as we got there we headed to the retail outlet so we could all buy some nice clothes for our big night out tonight. We had no idea what was in store for us tonight, Jon had organised everything, all we had to do was give him $130 each and dress up. However since Ben was extremely short of money at this stage he wasn’t coming. The group spilt up to do some serious shopping around the retail outlet. Dave, Jon and I all needed a suit and we searched and searched this place for a decent fitting and good looking suit. Eventually Dave and Jon found a great store and both ... read more

North America » United States » Utah » Zion National Park October 21st 2007

We woke up and packed everything back into the trailer and anything else into the van. But even though we had a massive cleanout in the last few days there was still stuff all over the place. We did one last sweep of the bunk house to make sure we weren’t forgetting anything then hit the road. It was only a very short drive today, we were going to Zion National Park which was another place none of us had ever heard of. We arrived at the campsite around lunchtime and put up our tents around the campfire. As soon as they were up we walked down to the Zion National Park Visitor’s Centre to have a browse through the gift shop. We needed to catch a shuttle bus to get to the trailhead so we ... read more

North America » United States » Utah » Bryce Canyon October 20th 2007

Had quite a bad night’s sleep last night due to all the loud snoring going on in the bunk house. We all got ready and got in the van on our way to Bryce Canyon National Park. But it was quite a long drive so Jon took a shortcut through a dirt road called the ‘Grand Staircase’ which is closed when there has been rain anytime in the last week, lucky for us there hadn’t. The road was so bumpy and rough the van was all over the road but it was all great fun. Jon was getting a little excited and speeding this massive van up and down narrow roads and sharp turns. We first stopped at the Bryce Canyon Visitor’s Centre and had a quick look around. I bought a book about all the ... read more

North America » United States » Arizona » Lake Powell October 19th 2007

We woke as normal and packed the trailer ready for our relatively short trip to a place called Lake Powell. We first stopped at a small Navajo market which was located just off the side of the road but in the middle of nowhere. We looked through the small stores full of hand made weapons and jewelry. I ended up buying a wristband made from dried seeds, I also was looking for something to send home but most of it was quite delicate so I didn’t bother. We got back into the van and continued on. Our next stop was another lookout point which overlooked a windy canyon with a windy river at the bottom, it was another awesome view. We took some photos then headed back to the van and on our way. We soon ... read more

We woke up at the crack of dawn and slowly got ready to head down to the lookout point where we were last night and watch the sunrise. It was freezing cold and some of the girls from our group brought their sleeping bags, fantastic idea, it was that cold. The sunrise was beautiful despite the freezing cold. It was an amazing sight seeing the sun rise over the Grand Canyon. Afterwards he drove down to a lodge to have breakfast, when we arrived there were deer hanging around outside the lodge eating grass. We took some close up photos and headed in for some food. We sat inside and ate a nice hot breakfast to keep us warm and awake. We finished our breakfast and left the lodge to go for a hike down into ... read more

I woke up to the sound of Betty ringing the breakfast bell and shouting at us to hurry and get up for breakfast. We slowly headed down to get some breakfast but it looked terrible but I was hungry enough to try it. That was until I asked for no mushroom sauce but still Betty piled it on, and my eyes weren’t wrong it was disgusting. We had a lazy morning today because for once we weren’t in a rush to leave. Eventually we packed up the trailer and headed off to one of the most famous places on Earth, the Grand Canyon. We drove straight to the airport at the Grand Canyon to go on a helicopter ride. We wanted to go on the hour long ride in and around the canyon but because it ... read more

North America » United States » Arizona » Monument Valley October 16th 2007

We woke up quite late considering we were leaving in half an hour. We quickly packed our stuff and threw it into the trailer. We had a short drive and stopped off at a cliff which had ‘hole n’ the rock’ written in large letters with an arrow pointing to a small hole. Had no idea what it was actually referring to but we all took the typical cheesy tourist photos then got the van and continued driving on. Next we stopped at an amazing lookout point where we could see for miles and miles into the distance. We took some photos and relaxed for a while on the edge of a cliff overlooking an incredible rocky landscape. We returned to the van and ate lunch then continued on to our campsite. On the way we ... read more

North America » United States » Utah » Moab October 15th 2007

We had another free day today although there didn’t seem to be much to do around Moab we weren’t going to waste our time. We woke up and got ready to go down to the mountain bike shop and go for a bike ride. Only Hannah, Min, Tina, Dave and I decided to go but the strange thing was that Jon said we were the first group he has had who have done the Moab bike ride. We walked down to the bike shop where they took our height and weight and adjusted the bikes to our individual build. We waited around while they adjusted our bikes in the workshop and soon enough they were ready to go. These bikes were high tech, really good quality mountain bikes which were worth around $1300 second hand. We ... read more
