Woke up this morning very groggy, my head was spinning but still managed to pack my stuff into the trailer before most people. Today would be the first day of hiking since way back in Yellowstone somewhere so most of us were looking forward to the exercise. First we stopped by the Arches National Park visitors centre to have a quickly look around, it was in an impressive location, surrounded by rocky red cliffs. We took the typical photo of the sign then continued into Aches to do three relatively small hikes. The first one was the shortest and took us around some basic arch formations of rocks then up to a large arch which had an amazing view. We took a group photo then headed back to the van as it started to rain. We ... read more

Another early start today, we got ready and packed the trailer to head off. Drove most of the day and arrived in Mesa Verde National Park late in the afternoon, None of us knew what to expect in this National Park, we’d never heard of it before. We walked along the trail down a hill until we reached a lookout point. From here we could see a large valley and in the valley walls a small city made out of stone had been built into the cliff. It didn’t look real from the view up on the lookout point it was a spectacular sight. We waited here until the tour guide came, we had just made it for the last tour of the day. She took us down ladders to the stone city and we sat ... read more

We woke up today and packed up our tents and gear into the trailer. Most of us weren’t brave enough to face sharing a shower with all those bugs so we all went without. I was so happy to leave this campsite and after the last couple we were all hoping they wouldn’t get any worse. We got in the van for our drive to check out the city of Santa Fe. We stopped off in Roswell just before lunch to have a look at this famous town. The other trek group arrived and we went into the Roswell museum. It was full of information about aliens and conspiracies but after briefly wondering around the museum we came to realise that it was kind of lame. We looked through the tacky gift shop but didn’t dare ... read more

After a few hours sleep it was time to get up and get ready for another drive. It was quite a long drive but most of us were asleep the entire drive, I don’t know how Jon does all this driving. We went straight to Carlsbad Caverns National Park and arrived in the middle of the afternoon. None of us were brave enough to take the stairs so we all took the lift down to these amazing caves far underground and walked the mile long trail around the bottom. They were very impressive but at the same time it wasn’t something I had never seen before, I’d been in plenty of caves before, this one was just massive. After we emerged from the caves most of us were starving and went straight for the café to ... read more

We got up and packed the van to be back on the road by around 8:30AM, today we headed for the Texas/Mexico border town of Del Rio. We first drove to San Antonio and stopped to have a look through the Alamo. We wondered around but most of us weren’t very interested, we took some photos and browsed through the museum then went to have a look in the shops. We were still looking for clothes to wear in Vegas and feeling a little desperate because no one had found anything useful. I did find a suit today which looked quite good but it was just slightly too big and anything else was way too expensive so I didn’t bother. I walked around the shopping centre with Dave and we stopped to get some lunch in ... read more

We got up this morning and a few of us made our way by bus to the centre of Austin to have a look around. We thought it would take longer to get into the city so we actually missed our stop and ended up at the Austin University. We wondered around, totally out of place until we found a bus that took us into the city. We got off near an old political building which was very impressive, we had a brief look around inside and when we came out on the other side we continued through the park and into the city centre. We walked down the street looking for any op-shops so we could buy a used suit for our mystery night in Las Vegas that Jon was planning. But it was so ... read more

We woke today around 8:30AM which was quite early considering we only had a short drive today and were hoping for a sleep in. We were staying at a hostel for the next couple of days which was run by a friend of Jon’s. The deal was that instead of camping somewhere in Austin we could stay at this hostel for a very cheap price, as long as we did a favor for Jon’s friend. A bunch of school kids were coming to the hostel today to learn more about other countries, and since our group consisted of people from all over the world she asked us if we could sit down and have a chat with them, tell them about ourselves and where we come from. We arrived at the hostel around lunchtime, Jon went ... read more

We were each given a key to get into either one of the rooms where we were staying and after waking up and packing the van, Jon was collecting them. However we were missing one, we’d looked everywhere inside and unpacked all our luggage but we had no idea where it was. Eventually we gave up looking, Jon wasn’t happy but we had a massive drive today and couldn’t hang around any longer. We drove until mid afternoon then stopped to take a boat ride on the bayou and have lunch. We ate lunch, sandwiches again, then jumped aboard the boat with a crazy guy called Cajun Jack, he was hilarious. Not long after we’d been on the boat it started pouring down, absolutely throwing it down, but the boat tour went on. By the time ... read more

Woke up in a hotel room this morning with a sore head and a very vague recollection of what happened last night. Hannah and I got ready and walked to our other hotel which was literally on the next block. We were all wondering why we all woke up with a sore head but after talking about it and looking at photos, it started to come back. Most of the group decided to have a walk around New Orleans to check it out, Hannah went straight to bed again. We headed past Bourbon Street and into the French-Market Place, looking in different stores for some souvenirs. I bought a few New Orleans t-shirts but Dave and I really wanted a decent necklace from here. We went off and looked in store after store trying to find ... read more

This morning after we got ready and ate breakfast we quickly cleaned the van and trailer as it was getting pretty filthy then set off to New Orleans. We arrived mid afternoon and went straight to the hotel to drop off our stuff. Tonight we were staying altogether in a large house like room which was made up of two separate quarters. We ran around choosing our beds and bringing our gear in before it was time to catch a boat down the Mississippi river. We walked down to the pier, bought tickets and before long we were sailing down the river getting amazing views of the city of New Orleans. Some areas of New Orleans were still looking a little rough and run down due to hurricane Katrina, even though that was two years ago. ... read more
