Walking through Carlsbad Caverns
After a few hours sleep it was time to get up and get ready for another drive. It was quite a long drive but most of us were asleep the entire drive, I don’t know how Jon does all this driving. We went straight to Carlsbad Caverns National Park and arrived in the middle of the afternoon. None of us were brave enough to take the stairs so we all took the lift down to these amazing caves far underground and walked the mile long trail around the bottom. They were very impressive but at the same time it wasn’t something I had never seen before, I’d been in plenty of caves before, this one was just massive. After we emerged from the caves most of us were starving and went straight for the café to get some food, we sat eating while we waited for everyone else to emerge from the caves.

We got back into the van and headed for our campsite. I thought last night was bad, this campsite was just as bad if not much worse, sometimes it’s hard to tell if we actually are at a ‘campsite’ or just sleeping on the side of the

road. The toilets were infested with bugs, usually I don’t mind but I’ve never seen so many bugs in one place, none of us used the bathrooms. We set up our tents and got ready to head back out to the caves and see the bats. We arrived at the natural entrance of the cave and picked out our seats for the nightly show of bats flying from the cave. It was an incredible sight, thousands and thousands of small bats leaving the cave to get food, though it did smell quite a bit. When the flow of bats decreased we headed back to the van, on the way we all went it and adopted a small bat of our own. We arrived back at the campsite and made dinner, for the rest of the night we sat around the campfire drinking. Eventually one by one we fell asleep in our tents.
