Europe » Italy » Veneto » Venice August 19th 2008

Everyone woke up and got ready for a day of exploring Venice. We jumped into the bus and Billy dropped us off just outside of the city, it was as far as buses could go. Jamie had a little chat to us regarding how to get around the maze of streets and canals which made up Venice. We had no maps here but instead he told us to follow the signs to the main sights, but careful of any fake signs which storeowners frequently erected to lure in confused tourists. We all followed Jamie as we walked through Venice heading for St. Marks Square. I was stunned walking through this beautiful city which was like nothing I’d ever experienced before, it was incredible. Once the group arrived in St. Marks Square we had some free time ... read more

This morning we had a very strict deadline, get up, get ready, eat breakfast and pack the bus before 7AM, otherwise you will be left behind. Today we were heading into the smallest country in the world, Vatican City. Most of the group boarded the bus on time but we still left quite late, some of the group literally ran to catch the bus as it left. I didn’t think yesterdays queue at the Colosseum could be beat but once we arrived at the Vatican the queues were insane. Luckily we were having a group tour around the Vatican hence we could join the much, much smaller, group line. Our private tour was with a young American historian who gave each of us some headphones so we could clearly hear her from her microphone. Once we ... read more

Europe » Italy » Lazio » Rome August 17th 2008

We were up early for our free day in Rome and I don’t think there was a single person who wasn’t going inside the Colosseum. We got ready, met with the group and got dropped off at the subway station to catch the train into the city. We arrived at the Colosseum to see possibly the biggest queue I had ever seen, there were so many people lining up to by tickets. However thanks to Jamie we had a sneaky plan which would significantly cut queuing times. We headed over to the Roman Forum and bought tickets to both the Forum and the Colosseum, therefore avoiding those massive queues for tickets. The Roman Forum contains some of the oldest ruins from the ancient civilization in the city, it is also where the ancient civilization was developed. ... read more

Another early morning and we woke up to find a beautiful day outside, it was perfect for our guided walking tour around Florence. Hannah and I packed up our gear and carried our luggage to the bus where the group was slowly getting ready. Eventually we all packed the bus and made the walk back into town to explore Florence. We met with our tour guide who introduced herself then lead us to our first stop in the Piazza della Signoria which was a huge square in the centre of Florence. The square is scattered with amazing statues and we stood listening to our guide explain the immense history behind some of them. It began quite interesting but she had so much to tell us that most of us lost interest quite quickly. Next we headed ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Florence August 15th 2008

One by one the group started emerging from their tents, everyone looking worse for wear this morning. The entire group had very little sleep, if any, and needed to be packed and ready as soon as possible as we had another big day ahead. We had breakfast and got ready, eventually everything was packed into the bus and we were ready to set off for Florence. We drove all morning, most of us recovering from the previous night, until the early afternoon when we reached Pisa. The Leaning Tower of Pisa was something I had wanted to see for a long time and today was finally the day. Billy parked the coach and we walked a good 20 minutes to get to the Tower. Jamie had warned us not to buy anything from the people trying ... read more

Europe » Monaco » Monte Carlo August 14th 2008

Hannah and I woke up earlier than everyone else in the group since we were taking the train into Monaco, however by the time we left the others were starting to get ready. We walked down to the train station down the road which took us straight into Monaco, but we realised that we had only just missed the train by a few minutes and the next one wasn’t for an hour. We bought tickets and headed down to the beach for a look around. We walked up and down the pebble covered beach until it was time we head back to the station and catch the train. It took around an hour to get into Monaco but the train ride was fantastic. It ran along the cliff side where we had incredible views of the ... read more

We woke this morning after an absolutely fantastic nights sleep in our hotel room. We ate breakfast downstairs then packed our bags to meet at the bus around the corner for 9AM. Eventually after waiting for people who got lost on the way, we jumped aboard the bus and were on our way. Since we didn’t go to Avignon after the events of yesterday, we were stopping there for lunch and a quick browse around before we headed for the French Riviera. Most people were happy just skipping Avignon so we had more time in the French Riviera but apparently according to Jamie we had to stop there. After a few hours in the bus we were in Avignon, we jumped out of the bus and had a look around this small but historical town. The ... read more

We were up incredibly early this morning, breakfast was at 7AM and we had to set off around 8AM. We packed our gear and tents then threw it all into the coach. We waited around another 20 minutes for Jamie then eventually after standing in the freezing cold we boarded the coach and set of for Avignon. It was another long drive today and the weather was pretty bad as well, constantly raining, sometimes pouring it down. We were all sitting in the bus, keeping ourselves entertained by either playing games, chatting or just sleeping when all of a sudden the bus seemed to lose power. Billy pulled over on the side of the highway to try get it started but it was dead, eventually we all figured out what was going on, we were stuck ... read more

Europe » Switzerland » South-West » Lauterbrunnen August 11th 2008

We were up early again ready to take the train up the Jungfrau mountain. We walked through the village and arrived around 30min early so we decided to have a quick look around the small town. A few of us searched for the Swiss army knife shop and had a quick look before it was time to head back and get the train. We jumped aboard and slowly began climbing up the massive mountain. The views on the way up were breathtaking, it was hard to believe I was actually seeing these beautiful snow top mountains. We made our first stop at a small village where we changed trains and once again slowly headed to the top. The landscape got better and better it was an incredible sight. As we ascended the Jungfrau I took some ... read more

Europe » Switzerland » South-West » Lauterbrunnen August 10th 2008

Woke early to my alarm and packed my bag and eventually the tent. This morning I wasn’t feeling great after a big night last night. After my shower I ate breakfast and helped loading the bus, soon enough we were ready to leave. Today we had a long drive across the boarder to Lauterbrunnen in Switzerland. We drove all day long, stopped for lunch then continued driving until we finally reached the border. Switzerland was known to have strict border control so we were expecting to be here for a while waiting to be granted entry. The bus pulled over and Billy turned the engine off. We sat for 5 minutes and were cleared into Switzerland, Jamie couldn’t believe it. He had never heard of it taking such a short amount of time before, considering a ... read more
