The last day of the year is finally here as everyone prepares to celebrate the beginning of 2010. We again woke up early as I was keen to get a good spot to watch the famous Sydney New Years Eve fireworks display, I was maybe a little too keen. I quickly got ready and rushed outside heading towards the Opera House, there were a few people out and about but not many. I grabbed a great spot in front of the Opera House I arrived just before 8:30 in the morning. Hannah came and met me shortly after and we settled in for a long, long wait. That really was about if for the majority of the day, which seemed to go forever. By lunchtime it was packed, hard to move around there were so many ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Blue Mountains December 30th 2009

Another very early start this morning as we prepared ourselves for a day trip around the magnificent Blue Mountains of New South Wales. We headed to McDonalds for breakfast, conveniently it was also where we were being picked up for the trip. Both Hannah and I were really tired and weren’t really up for another busy day so as different tour companies came and went picking up tourists we were kinda hoping that they would forget us. Eventually a busted up ancient mini bus drove by as we laughed at the crappy tour that must be, the tour guide jumped out of the bus and called out our names. We were driving around the streets for what seemed hours picked people up then it was another hour or so until we finally reached the Blue Mountains. ... read more

As soon as we started planning for our trip through Australia we decided that we would go to Sydney for New Years Eve 2009. It was just by chance that we were looking at availability of accommodation in February that we discovered there already wasn’t a whole lot left. In fact already was it so booked out we could either have gone really cheap and further out of the city, or go really expensive closer to Circular Quay. So we decided to treat ourselves and in February, 10 months before the end of the year we booked a room in the Sir Stanford in Circular Quay for almost £200 a night! Our flight left for Sydney very early in the morning and once our stuff was packed we got a lift from my parents, who were ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Byron Bay December 21st 2009

21/12/2009 - Our last Greyhound bus ride was early afternoon after a fantastic and expensive time in Surfer’s Paradise we were moving onto Byron Bay. Neither Hannah or myself had ever been to Byron so this was something we were really looking forward to. It was a short bus ride to Byron and we were dropped off at a small bus shelter in the middle of town. Our hostel had a shuttle which was waiting for us so we jumped in and were taken to Cape Byron YHA, our last hostel of the trip. We checked in and went up to our room, it wasn’t great. Most of the hostels we had stayed at were outstanding, this one was anything but. Room was small and lifeless with no air-conditioning only a useless creaky fan. We dumped ... read more

15/12/2009 - Today as a treat we were able to sleep in a little longer than usual since our bus didn’t depart till 10:30am. Once showered we went to find a café to get some breakfast then returned to our room to pack our bags. When we arrived at the bus terminal we bumped into a couple of girls who were on our Whitsunday’s cruise, we decided that we’d meet for dinner tonight in Surfer’s Paradise since they were only there for 1 night. The bus ride was stress free and only took an hour to get into Surfer’s Paradise. Surfer’s Paradise is a lively place with an amazing beach, theme parks, and amazing nightlife. I had been here time and time again and loved it. We got dropped off at the Surfer’s bus terminal and ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Brisbane » Moreton Island December 14th 2009

Hannah and I woke up at the crack of dawn this morning and got ready for a massive day out on Moreton Island. We took the local bus to a rundown hostel down the road where we waited to be picked up by the tour company. Eventually a beaten up 4WD stopped and our tour guide with his long dreads came out and met us, it was going to be an interesting day. We introduced ourselves to everyone in the 4WD as we drove towards the marina which was a good hour away. We had been told that this tour includes lunch which led us to believe something will have been prepared or waiting for us when the time came. However on the way to the marina our tour guide stopped at Subway and picked up ... read more

Since both Hannah and I had previously been to Brisbane on our return we decided that only a couple of nights should do. We met some of Hannah’s friends for breakfast at a really good café down the road. Once we finished we headed into the city and headed straight to Peter Pan’s to organise what we would do tomorrow. Our plan was to find a cheap tour to Moreton Island just off the coast and spend the day snorkeling and sand boarding. There were loads of tour groups but somehow we managed to pick the most expensive one, even though we were running extremely low on money. We paid up then headed out to explore the city. It was another really hot day so we headed over to Southbank and into the lagoon to dip ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Sunshine Coast December 7th 2009

07/12/2009 - We checked out of Colonial Village YHA for a second time then caught the shuttle bus to the Greyhound terminal. Just as we were leaving the owner ran up to us and thanked us for staying, then offered us some free candy, this hostel and its staff truly were outstanding. It was a good few hours before we reached the Caloundra turnoff where we were dropped off. The taxi we had booked earlier came as soon as the bus left, perfect timing, we took it to my Grandma’s house in Pelican Waters. It was good to see her again, it had been a few years since I was last here. For the rest of the afternoon we caught up and settled in for a relatively relaxing week here. 08/12/2009 - Another relaxing day really, ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Fraser Island December 5th 2009

05/12/2009 - We woke early again today, got ready and checked out of this fantastic hostel in Harvey Bay. We left our luggage at the desk because we would be returning late tomorrow afternoon after spending a couple of days on Fraser Island. We grabbed our overnight packs and sat to have breakfast while we waited for our tour bus to pick us up. Soon enough it arrived and we jumped aboard for our trip to the barge. There were so many different companies, most of which I recognised from when I was booking, we were on an overnight tour with Fraser Island Explorer. It took us around 45 minutes to reach Fraser Island where we met our guide and group for the next couple of days. After intro’s and safety tips we were on our ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Hervey Bay December 4th 2009

It was another very early morning as we woke up and packed our gear ready to take the morning Greyhound bus into Hervey Bay. Once we were packed we took the free shuttle bus from our hostel and boarded the Greyhound was we were there. It took us a few hours before we reached Harvey Bay where our YHA hostel shuttle was waiting for us. Since there were a few buses coming in we had to wait for them to arrive so we headed to the supermarket to pick a few things up before eventually we were on our way. We arrived at the hostel and were greeted with cold drinks and small cakes, it was a first for any hostel I have ever stayed with and it made a big impression on us. After checking ... read more
