After spending all day yesterday wandering around Airlie Beach and swimming in the lagoon we took an overnight bus to Agnes Water. It was a tough bus ride but unlike Hannah I managed to get quite a lot of sleep during the 10 hour journey. Once we arrived in Agnes Water our hostel shuttle bus was waiting to take us to our accommodation down the road. Since it was somewhere we hadn’t originally planned to visit we didn’t really know much about this place, except that people kept telling us how good Scooteroo is. Scooteroo was a three and a half hour chopper tour around Agnes Water and The Town of 1770 down the road. We were unsure whether or not we really wanted to do it, but eventually we just booked it. For most of ... read more

Yesterday Hannah and I decided to take a closer look at one of the islands that made up the Whitsunday’s so we purchased return ferry tickets to Daydream Island. We took our time in getting up and getting ready because today was actually the first day we didn’t have to get up early for whatever reason. We walked all the way back to the marina at Abel Point and caught the mid-morning ferry across to stunning Daydream Island, it took around 20 minutes to get there. Daydream Island was a very small island which had one large resort with facilities open to the public. We walked around the resort past an amazing looking swimming pool to have a look at the world’s largest open air aquarium. It was really impressive actually, full of loads of different ... read more

28/11/2009 - Since we arrived into Airlie Beach so late yesterday we were unable to check in for our Whitsunday’s Sailing trip on board Powerplay. We woke up and checked out of the hostel, we pack a small daypack and left our main luggage in the YHA hostel. We headed to the travel agent who gave us some forms to complete and take on board with us, we sat down at McDonald’s and filled them out. Our boat left at noon so we walked all the way to the marina and eventually found Powerplay being prepared. Powerplay was a catamaran which focused on speed and diving. It was also equipped with a spa bath and had a maximum of 18 passengers. It was more of a luxury boat considering the options available for sailing the Whitsunday’s. ... read more

25/11/2009 - After a fantastic time in Cairns it was time to move on even though we could have easily spent longer there. We got our stuff ready and checked out of the hostel, we caught a taxi to the Greyhound coach terminal. We were a little early so in the meantime we sat in the café opposite and had some breakfast. Soon enough the coach arrived and we jumped on board. Including our lunch stop just off the motorway the trip took around 6 hours to get to Townsville. Once we arrived we bought return tickets to the ferry to Magnetic Island and boarded it straight away. It took another 20 minutes on a very rough and windy ride across. Next we jumped onto another bus which dropped us off right outside our YHA hostel. ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Great Barrier Reef November 22nd 2009

22/11/2009 - We woke up ridiculously early this morning, packed up our stuff and got ourselves ready to be picked up from our hostel just after 6AM. We were taken to the Pro-Dive shop where we would leave our luggage and collect our scuba gear to load it on the ute. It wasn’t long before we took the mini-van to the marina and boarded Scubrapro III. There were 32 of us in total, most of which were certified divers coming along to experience the Great Barrier Reef. Everyone sat down for an introduction chat as we left the marina and headed to our first dive site in the outer reef, it would take 3 hours to get there. After controlling my sea sickness pretty well for 3 hours the boat came to a stop and everyone ... read more

Another early start this morning and I was so excited at what we were going over the next few days. I had booked Hannah and I on a 5 day PADI Open Water Diving Course with a company called Pro-Dive. I had wanted to do this for years now and finally I was starting it today, Hannah on the other hand was a little reluctant. We were picked up at taken to the training centre where we would spend the first 2 days of the course in the classroom and in the pool, leanring how to dive. We arrived and filled out all the paperwork and after introducing ourselves got stuck straight into it. We spent the first half of the first day in the classroom watching videos then doing a quiz then the second half ... read more

Again a brutally early morning today, we were being picked up at 6AM for a day trip to Cape Tribulation and the Daintree Rainforest. Shortly after getting ready the bus/4WD arrived, we were the first to be picked up. We drove around Cairns picking a few other people up then were on our way to Port Douglas to pick up a few more. Even though for Hannah and I we had really only been driving around, it was quite a good way to see more of Cairns and Port Douglas. The drive to Port Douglas from Cairns was also a very good one with beautiful views out over the cliffs towards the ocean. Eventually everyone was on board, it was a full bus, and we were on our way to the Daintree River for a cruise. ... read more

We woke up at the crack of dawn to get a lift to Melbourne airport for our 7AM flight to Cairns. It was the start of 5 weeks travelling down the East Coast of Australia. The flight took just over 3 hours and as soon as we stepped off the plane we could feel the heat, it was a beautiful day in Cairns. We waited for our hostel shuttle bus to arrive and got a free lift to our accommodation. It was the cheapest place we had booked all holiday so I wasn’t really expecting much at all, however we were pleasantly surprised, the place was fantastic. We were shown to our room, which was small but very clean, then got straight out of our jeans, it was boiling. After looking around the hostel we decided ... read more

It was good to finally be back home but at the same time strangely felt like I had never left. There were a few big changes but for the most part everything was exactly how I left it. Since Hannah wasn’t arriving until the same flight next week I spent most of the time catching up with friends and family. It was exciting to see what everyone had been up to over the past 18 months and also telling everyone what I had been up to. I was stunned by the incredible weather that welcomed me back, the first few days were all above 34C, it was hot! On Tuesday I headed into the city to have a look around Southbank and my former workplace Crown Casino. Inside everything was completely different, I couldn’t believe how ... read more

This countdown clock started on 26th Janurary - Australia Day - at: 276 Days 16:02:00 Wow, I started the timer above in the beginning of the year, 26th January in fact, Australia Day, I have waited all year but finally, finally I’m heading home. The timer which began with 276 days remaining is now down to 3 days as I frantically pack and get everything ready for 2 months travelling down under. I have thrown in the job, am completely free and ready for excitement and adventure. It’s this feeling I have at the moment which makes me love travelling so much, total freedom and excitement. We have been quite organised for this trip so far, we have most of our accommodation booked and paid for, as well as many expensive extras and all our flights. ... read more
