So, I wish I had something exciting to report... But I haven't been too touristy, I've tried to do some work and remember that it isn't vacation. So yesterday, which was Tuesday, because I'm trying to keep track, I decided to venture forth for lunch. I walked around, had an iced coffee off the street, it was tasty. Being a "farang" which is foreigner, I got the plastic cup to go with it. Just like in Peru, people love little plastic baggies with straws to drink out of. I don't know if it is cheaper or what the deal is... Regardless, I got the cup and straw. People seem to go for straws here. Then I tried to find one of the restaurants listed in the book. I finally find it and it is closed. So, ... read more

After a 4 hour bumpy bus journey from Malacca, & 1 1/2 hour speed ferry from Mersing, we arrived at Bamboo Chalets - Air Batang Village, Tioman Island. From the boat we could see the peaks of the mountains clad in lush rainforest vegetation topped with misty clouds. As we got closer it soon became apparent of why Tioman Island has been voted as the 10th most beautiful island in the world. The soft sandy white shores fringed by coconut palms and the crystal clears waters of the South China sea are perfect for swimming and snorkelling. As we approached the jetty we could see our accommodation perched on the hills amongst the rocks and surrounded by bougainvillea and tropical gardens - not bad for just over ten pound a night! The view from our balcony ... read more

Asia » Singapore March 13th 2007

The day began just before we landed in Singapore at 3:45am. Once in the arrivals hall we did what any self-respecting luxury traveller would do and found a quiet corner, unrolled our sleeping bags and went to sleep for another 3 hours before getting the unfeasibly clean Mass Rapid Transport system into town. We’d chosen the Little India area as our base and our hostel was called ‘The Inn Crowd’ - a place we’d recommend with air-con in the dorms, free Wi-Fi and plenty going on all the time. We went down to the Harbourfront and found ourselves in a land of spotlessly clean shopping and entertainment malls and small hyper-polite people. We saw an advert for a new attraction called ‘Tiger Live’, which pays homage to all things Tiger-related (the iconic beer that is rather ... read more

A QUIEN CONOCI?

Today is a good day. Yes, this is it. Some of you may have heard me talk about chasing that feeling of being grounded and content? Today I feel it. Although I've been in KL for almost a month now, seeing friends and relatives still seem like a neverending feat! Can't remember the last time I've slept in any one place for more than 2 nights in a row. I get it. Some of the questions I've set out seeking answers for are finally answered. ... read more

PROLOGUE While still on the way from Kuching our party was already planning for our next trip. Dr. Burton wanted us to go to Manado in Indonesia. But I have learned enough from our trip to Kuching. I want my next trip to be planned down to the last detail. While searching for affordable means of transportation within Asia, I stumbled upon the Air Asia Website. At that time they had a promo for MLA-KL. When I computed the round-trip ticket, it only cost a little over Php4,000.00 so I grabbed the opportunity and availed of the promo. Dr. Talaroc and Melvin also availed of the promo but Dr. Burton did not due to some reasons. Melvin was not able to come with us in the actual trip, however, because he was not allowed by his ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » Central Highlands March 13th 2007

Time has really been flying by in Vietnam. This bustling country with the second fastest growing economy of Asia is certainly a contrast from the laid back, relaxing atmosphere I experienced in Laos. Vietnam has been a welcome change and with unique culture and social characteristics apart from the partially homogeneous nature of Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia. Over a thousand years of Chinese influence has left its mark in many parts of the country, both culturally and socially. It's been less than 100 years since the Vietnamese switched over to the Roman alphabet from Chinese characters. During the French colonial rule the Vietnamese accepted many influences of the west in an attempt to partially assert themselves against foreign domination. Many political and social leaders believed that the best way to free themselves from French-rule was to ... read more

It’s been a fairly uneventful 2nd week at Aravind. Most days have followed a similar pattern, I’ve been struggling to secure meetings with key individuals from whom I need information and I’ve also discovered, much to my annoyance that one area that I have been investigating has previously been very comprehensively analysed by staff here and several days of my effort have effectively been wasted! In addition to the fascinating camp review meeting on Monday I have also been invited to observe a presentation delivered by a reasonably junior member of the faculty staff, a young girl called Deepa, to 30 or so of the organisation’s most senior medical staff. Not wanting to be late and being unsure of the precise location of the meeting room I deliberately set of early, arriving as Deepa was still ... read more

Asia » Laos March 13th 2007

Four Thousand Islands is the name given to the southernmost region of Laos where the Mekong River, having already wound its way thousands of kilometres from the mountains of Nepal, decides to broaden and pokily thread its way among a nest of islands. The number of islands is certainly not the nice round number of 4000: it differs depending on the season. In the wet time, the Mekong swells, submerging some of the islets and rubbing the silt off the banks, turning its waters from green to turbid brown. In the dry time though, as now, mopheads of jungle pop up everywhere, and you'd even be forgiven for mistaking a water buffalo, plying these byways with just nose and eyes levelled above the surface, for one of the four thousand. It is here in this gentle ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Pahang » Taman Negara National Park March 13th 2007

We arrived at the main village people stay in called Kuala Tahan in Taman Negara National Park at 6.30pm. The forest here is supposed to be the oldest in the world, the area was never affected by assorted ice ages or volcanic eruptions so besides people there has been little interference with the virgin jungle in the last 130 million years, (or so my little book says!) We found accommodation which turned out to be a bit of an effort after travelling for so long but was also quite entertaining. Whilst Rich was trying to barter the price of a room down with a Malaysian man the man thought he was asking where the internet was so Rich was saying 50 Ringitt a night & the man would say it's round the corner & to the ... read more
