It was an early start on Tuesday and Erica was the first to use the bathroom where she found Nigel in his normal hiding place, only today he was feeling more adventurous as he decided to venture into our room where he hide under Erica’s backpack. We caught a boat to take us to the tour operator’s office, one and a half hours down the river. The scenery was amazing and we saw buffalos drinking from the river as well as lots of colourful birds. We then caught a minibus to the train station where we were catching the jungle train. Yes a train that travels through the jungle. Erica and Rich thought that it would be some old steam train, despite us being in the 21st Century but it turned out to be a normal ... read more

Earlier this week, we decided to take a 2 day stop to Shanghai. It is only 1 hour away. We have been fortunate enough to befriend a wealthy student of ours, Paul. We helped him pass an English certification course so that he could travel and study in Australia. He is very generous. His father owns a tea company, and apparently he owns a foreign currency trading company. He is 22. His father is very influential, and his uncle is the head of police in Suzhou. He said if we ever get into trouble, let him know, and he can get us out of trouble. Anyways, his father's partner let us ride with him in a car early on Wednesday morning. Very convenient. We arrived in Shanghai and went right to the Shanghai Museum of Science ... read more

Nar strommen helt plotsligt gick i hela Kathmandu sent pa kvallen(vilket den tydligen ... read more

Well a slight change of plan, as we were in the North of Thailand we decided to head to Cambodia via Laos instead of going back to Bangkok and across. Maybe this wasn’t the best option as have now realised as transport (or anything come to think of it) isn’t that easy in Laos. But anyway, we caught a night bus from Chiang Mai to Udon Thani and onto Nong Khai where we crossed the boarder, 15 hours travelling in total. This was an interesting journey to say the least as the driver over took on every blind bend flashing his lights to warn others we were coming through, needless to say we decided the best option was to close our eyes, put our fingers in our ears and hope for the best!! As they say ... read more

A new day and a new city! We get up early before 7:00am and head for our included breakfast, a far cry from the Sheraton, but better than horrible. We go back to our room to decide how to tackle our day. Our cab driver from last night had given us his business card that offered tours and drivers. We were about to call him when the phone rang, like any good salesman, he beat us to the punch. We agreed on a fixed rate of 500 rupees about $14 CAD to have a driver in an air-conditioned car all day. Our first stop was the 17th century aqueduct called Panchakki. Water pumped from a reservoir in the hills 6 km away collects in a square pool filled with Kohl fish. Then it was off to ... read more

Samir's article. Back in Bombay, we finally went to the Elephanta Caves. First we took a 1 hour boat to the island, then a 5 miniute mini train to the stairs, and then a 10 miniute walk up the steps. When we got there, we realized it was worth the time. The Elephanta Caves are three caves carved out of the mountain, and there are giant statues of gods and carvings that tell stories. There were more monkeys and stray dogs there than anywhere else that I've been to (not including the SPCA shelter.) The caves were ancient, but probably not as old as the Hampi ruins. We also fond a small hole in the side of the hill that had 6 cute, as in sickening cute, whimpering puppies trapped in it. No clue what they ... read more

The new year consists of 5 days of events. In Joe's hometown, you usually did something different each day. On day 4, I believe, we went off to more parties. These were special parties in celebration of people's birthdays who were turning 50, 60, 70, 80, etc. Birthdays are different here. After the New Year, you add one more year to your age. And when you are born, you are automatically 1. So we are 24 here, but 22 in the US. Anyways, I guess actual birth dates aren't celebrated in excess. So on the 4th day, we went to another relative of Joe's who was turning 60. The lunch was crazy, and we weren't ready for it at all. There were around 20-30 people at the party, 5 people per table. The family hosting the ... read more

Spent our first day exploring the sights- went to floating village which was pretty cool. Everything on bamboo rafts inc police station, secondary school (which was saw moving to higher waters!) Quite ingenius really so save them from being flooded! Visited war museum about the civil war in cambodia- was good (if not bit complicated!) but our guide was blind, had an prostetic leg and ball bearings and shrapnel still stuck under his skin. Made you think a bit, especially as there are still millions of mines over Cambodia. Ended the day more happily watching the sunset over Angkor Wat at the top of a mountain... very peaceful (except for the Japanese tourists!)... read more

... read more
