Hello once again to everybody, It seems like an absolute age since my last post, although that's probably mainly because I've been doing so much. For those of you that don't know, I have now begun my volunteer project in northern Hanoi, and it's so interesting to see the difference between being here as a tourist and as a volunteer. And I've met so many cool Vietnamese people (mainly students) here, and the volunteers are great! Don't seem to have done much volunteering so far though... When I left off last time I had just finished giving you guys my first impressions of Hanoi as a city, and I remember describing my trip to the Perfume Pagoda. I had a great time going around with a tourist group consisting of two suspiciously un-Canadian Canadians (the man ... read more

Now we're back in India. It's more pleasant than I remembered. We're staying in this place called Main Bazaar witch is not that different from Thamel in Katmandu. Lots of hotels, shops with tourist crap and grown men on tricycles. Here the people dont yell at you as much.."buy this and that". Tonight we leave for Chennai which is a lot more south, on the east coast. Maybe the south has nicer people. The Delhi people are pushy and a bit rude. I'm not giving up on India yet. ... read more

Hi all I'll start by saying my flight home is now booked for the 11th June, it's due to arrive at Heathrow at 11.35 am. Mum, I'm sorry it's a Monday, but I can easily make it back to Chelmsford by myself if it's really awkward, I even contemplated with Kim + Gemma how fun it would be to make the journey back entirely by myself, although I think the walk back from Eves Corner would be tough and I left my door key at home, so that's probably not a clever idea. Anyway, I'm by myself here at the moment. When I've been busy teaching or making a trip into Tiruvannamalai I've felt fine, but when I have marking or planning and I'm left by myself I miss the company of people a lot, I ... read more

Haven't really been blogging lately. Don't really know what to write about. Can't write about Cam any more and don't really have a great feeling about writing about what I do every day all day long - teaching and studying. Not really much of a change. Someone kind of said it once a long time ago when I was blogging, my blog isn't a travel blog and that's what the site's for. I live here and have a life so I haven't really thought that people would want to read about it. The things I could possibly write about are the changes in my daily activities - like yesterday my class had a get together so I went and got to meet a bunch of Germans. There aren't any Germans that I know of besides them ... read more

Arrived in Mumbai on the 16th about 9.30pm after my flight was delayed for a couple of hours. I got my first taste of India before I'd even landed with the trippy woman next to me giving me a basic lesson in Kundalini Yoga, resulting in a few wierd looks from the other passengers. The smell and heat brought back instant memories as soon as I was off the plane, and after a battling touts for a taxi, I was starting to wonder if I'd made the right decision. The taxi ride didn't help (mad overtaking through crazy city streets with no lights on - just the usual), nor did my overpriced craphole of a hotel. Mumbai is just like any other big city in India; smelly, hot, poverty-stricken and full of people trying to ... read more

No rest for the wicked, and frankly, after five days of yoga and holy sites, we were far from wicked. Nonetheless, we had to pop out of the protective hug of Varanasi's old town, into the mind-bogglingly congested streets towards the train station for a 16 hour journey west, to Rajastan and its capital, Jaipur. I say 16 hours. But the train was one and a half hours late by the time it left. It was four hours late after 30km and by the time we reached Jaipur it had taken a bum-numbing 24 hours! Amazing to think that the world can do a complete rotation and we spent the whole thing sat (or laying pressed tight against the ceiling) on a train. Still, it wasn't such a bad journey. We spent the first few hours ... read more

Just wrote a whole long intro to this blog and then the computer stuck and I lost the lot. :-(( Firstly, I am really grateful to Mike, my travelling companion over the last week (more later), for this blog entry still having photos, as my camera was lost/stolen in Jaisalmer (more later). He has kindly copied all the photos he took during the time we travelled together. So as Mike was behind the camera, this means I'm in more of the pictures, which is a good or bad thing depending on which way you look at it... I'm just coming to the end of my time in Rajasthan, I've been here almost 3 weeks, and about to make my way up to the Punjab, to Amritsar. So, rewinding a couple of weeks, if I can recall ... read more

Ahhh.. last night went out for the usual Thursday end-of-week drink session with me buddies.. I started asking them, hey, should i bring my Tibetan dagger along for the trip? It's no Ka-bar.. but it's a Ka-wa! haha.. Kawa is a branded dagger in the Yunnan/Tibet region in China.. made of tibetan steel that can 削铁如泥!shave iron like mud.. dun play play.. they say dagger too small.. and the dagger's more like a ceremonial/souvenir dagger.. melvin then suggested taking adrian's Lord of the Rings sword.. the reforged sword of Isildur.. dunno what new name.. a double handed broad sword.. that should earn some respect.. heh.. Then they said no lah.. cos they'll most probably be carrying guns to rob you, if you encounter them.. so mel suggested, why not buy a gun?? TING! light bulb appeared ... read more

We toke the over night train from bangkok up to chang mai . air conditioned and a bit like a morgue. the buffet car though was amazing. they close at ten but around half eight turned off the lights , cranked cheesy western music right up and just left us with a string of crappy coloured lights hanging from the ceiling and a banner saying happy new year, plus there's no windows. the noise was amazing what an experience. kinda made the night. got to Chang mai early doors and had a free day so went up to to the elephant conservation centre. they had a two day old baby elephant and put on a bit of a show. moving stuff, painting and the like. next morning we went up and up in to the hills. ... read more
