I'm originally from London, England, and left everything to go travelling in October 2006, with just a one way ticket taking me to India, Singapore, Bangkok and Sydney. The rest was up to me and left largely unplanned, purposely - I wanted my travelling to take me rather than me controlling it. I had no idea how long I was going to be away for, or when, or if, I'd be back.

In the end I travelled for 15 months, spending the first 6 months travelling all around India, a long-time dream of mine, then on to Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand again, Australia, New Zealand, and Australia again for the last couple of months.

You can read all about it in my blogs which are - just to warn you ;) - very long, and anecdotal as well as travel-tips oriented. I hope you find something useful - and maybe entertaining - in them.

I started writing a book based on my travels, while I was still away, in Australia, and finished it when I came back. Now I'm trying to get it published. I used bits of my blogs in certain parts of the book. I always wanted to write but had never written anything substantial. I think having the experience of travelling, and an instant framework for a 'story', plus writing my travelblog, was inspirational enough to get me writing properly. I'm now also running my own business as a copyeditor/proofreader at www.copyeditingproofreading.co.uk

The following writing is another extract from some of the work in my book. I thought I'd post it up as it describes one of the not-so-good times I had while travelling. I sometimes found it difficult to admit to having bad days, and succumbing to loneliness and other difficult emotions, but it's part of my travel tapestry and I hope some people who read it might resonate with the feeling behind it as being something we can all experience at certain times. Pushkar I lay on the bed, wondering at which point I could consider that this man was molesting me. I was in Pushkar having a Reiki session, with someone who was highly recommended in Lonely Planet. Maybe this was what was clouding my judgement: I must be imagining what he was doing, over- ... read more

Inspired by Mell (tried to do a link but can't seem to) who writes really enjoyable travel email blogs, I thought I'd put this one up which I sent to a friend of mine whilst travelling. I did also write it partly as a piece of writing I thought I could use one day. I've added in a few photos as well. 24 Jan 2007 Mysore Hi Tracey! How annoying - I was in the middle of a great piece of writing about Mysore, then the power failed (again) and I lost the lot. AAAARRGH! Ok let's try again..... So - I got on my bus to Mysore on Friday afternoon, thankfully this time it was indeed a Volvo A/C bus as promised and was a nice comfy ride apart from the screening of a really ... read more

Following on from my last entry, this next bit is from my first day at the Sivananda ashram in Kerala. A loud gong being pounded over and over woke me at 5.15. It was still dark outside and the ceiling fans were whirring so the power must have come back on at some point. “Om Nama Shivaya! Good morning! Time to wake up!” Neesha’s voice boomed through the dorm as she went around clicking on lights and turning off ceiling fans. I saw her poking her head underneath people’s mosquito nets and singing “Om Nama Shivaya!” individually to each person and I jumped out of bed quickly before she got to me. I stumbled down to the trough sinks at the end of the dorm, to clean my teeth. A big line of ants was crawling ... read more

I haven really done any travelling since coming back from my long trip, but I feel inspired at the moment to do some more writing anyway. So Im just going to pick random days from my time away that I remember well for various reasons, and write about them. This first one is actually an extract taken from the book I wrote about my travels, and I have just changed it in some places for the purposes of posting it up here. I need to say also that the main essence of the writing is true, but names have been changed. Sivananda Ashram, Kerala. I sat in the back of a white ambassador taxi, and looked around me as we pulled out of the tiny Trivandrum airport. As we’d come into land, lush, green rainforests spread ... read more

Finally I get round to doing this last blog. Way out of date, but better late than never... As some of you didn't know, you'll see now there is an end to this story, or at least another beginning - yep, I'm in Dublin! but I'll leave that till later on; first, I've got the task of remembering back the last couple of months. I flew to Auckland from Melbourne, and for the first time since being on the other side of the world, suddenly really felt very far away. I'm not sure why, maybe the knowledge of New Zealand being that much more remote, two small islands in the middle of the pacific, maybe also the cooler weather, and the harsh blustery winds. I couldn't decide what to do in New Zealand, so was in ... read more

A friend of mine emailed me after my last blog saying it was nice to get a shorter one, and good to be able to read it all in one go for once - well, I'm afraid I'm back to normal! - and as it's been so long even since that one, (so long in fact, I just noticed they've changed the layout and font for uploading entries) this one will probably be longer than ever (sorry Nikki!) and sorry to everyone else too. Also I have to apologise for the possible lack of paragraphs and gaps after full stops in this - I keep putting the paragraphs in and then when I save it, it just comes out as one long text which makes it harder to read - very annoying -I'll keep trying but ... read more

Just a real real quickie this time - I'm not doing a blog this month because I'm writing a book instead (yes really!); and at the moment I'm writing a lot and haven't got enough time for both, I'm afraid; I'll try and get a blog together by the end of Sept or early Oct, maybe just before I leave Australia this time round. In the meantime, I've uploaded just a few pictures anyway and done a map. In a nutshell: Sydney, Woy Woy (about an hour north of Sydney), Urunga or nearby, anyway - close to Coffs Harbour - staying with Helen) and now Byron Bay, where I've been for a week so far. Been travelling quite slowly, as you'll see from the map - in a month, haven't covered much ground. Then again, it's ... read more

If you think you've seen this blog before, you have - was one of the ones lost but I managed, with lots of help from Liz (thanks so much!) to recover it, and think when I hit 'publish', you'll get an email alert again. Sorry if you've already read it..... Thanks also Beth (my sister) who has spent loads of time trying to recover my other stuff! So, back in Bangkok for the third time now. Almost feels like coming home to come back here, and I have to say that though when I first came to Bangkok I didn't like it that much, it's definitely grown on me over time. When we were back here a couple of weeks ago, I had still been planning to go on to the Phillippines - I was going ... read more

Really meant to get my act together and not leave it so long between blogs, somehow this didn't happen. I can partly blame the crap internet connections in Laos and Vietnam, and partly me.... the plan to make it shorter didn't seem to work that well last time; Rod, one of my friends who I'm travelling with, encapsulated it by saying, "I read your blog. Well, some of it. It does go on and on..." Anyway, back to Laos. Will just say a little bit more about our time in Luang Prabang, that I was brief about last time. We had a really relaxing nice time there, and it's one of those places that's hard to leave, just being a very chilled out place, full of nice cafes where you can actually get real cheese ... read more

Sorry again for the long delay in this blog entry, a) didn't realise how much time had passed since the last one and b) since getting to Laos, internet connection is very erratic. It's now taken me about a day and a half to upload all the photos I wanted to put on this blog and there are loads this time. And what I've decided to do this time is do a much shorter writing bit (ha ha, I guess we'll see how that turns out!) and let the photos do more of the talking. So I'll just try and do (the several) highlights of the last few weeks. I ended up in Bangkok for 2 weeks which wasn't planned at all, and I wasn't particularly enjoying it, not least because of spending my first ... read more
