When we got to Madurai on March 11th it was late, and we went straight to our chosen hotel by rickshaw. Our hotel—Sree Devi—was located breathtakingly close to the Meenakshi Temple complex, and according to our guidebook it was “spotless” and “great value.” Two bellhops led us into the tiny rickety elevator, insisting that all four of us crowd in with our bags despite the fact that we were nearly on top of each other, and could much more easily have taken two trips. Our room was small, windowless, filthy—to the point of dirty handprints and hairs all over the sheets—and absolutely reeked like a pile of trash that has been stewing in the sun for days. We’d had some less-than-perfect rooms before, but this one was certainly the worst. But by then it was ... read more

16 MARCH 2007 We finally arrived in Chiang Mai just as the sun was going down. We rang our guest house and they eventually picked us up. (having a thai sim card comes in very handy) The city is pretty and has a big moat all around the centre with fountains in. It's so much calmer than Bangkok. My room was pretty crap and didn't even resemble the nice rooms the tour place had shown me in the brochure. It was also quite noisy. Christian and Birgitte the German couple were also doing the same as us but had got the train. We met another German couple who were doing our tour, and we all went for dinner. We went to the night market which was really nice with loads of great stuff (fairy lights, ... read more

March 12 ~ March 15, 2007 Diving in bohol was an awesome experience. I get to enjoy a different kind of blissfulness in another dimension of space. Being down under has given me the opportunity to see an untouched paradise that i will always want to go back, time after time. Memorable also was that I met fellow divers and on that trip i was the only pinoy on board. It was pretty good being around them and not that intimidating because they were very supportive, helpful and friendly who shares the same passion with me. My diving buddies are Lur (german guy) and Dave (american guy) whose infectious passion has caught up with me. Dave was also responsible for taking pictures of me while I was diving. Diving has given me the opportunity to ... read more

We had around 5 days to get a feel for the city and spent the majority of that time wandering around wearing out the soles of our shoes. Other than the usual tourist spots of Tian'anmen Square, The Forbidden City, Summer Palace and a trip out to the Great Wall, we didn’t have much on the agenda. Often we have found it more rewarding to visit the ‘normal’ parts of a city rather than those aimed at visitors as this process gives you a far more realistic (and cheaper) perspective on a country. Our first encounter with the city was the Wangfujing ‘walking street’, a pedestrian area right in the center of town. Adjoining this was the ‘Traditional Custom and Culture Alley’ which was mainly aimed at tourists and contained lots of small restaurants and ... read more

Asia » South Korea » Seoul March 16th 2007

Our first trip into the biggest trip into the city in South Korea :) We finnished work earlier than usual (prob around 4ish) and as it's a pretty far drive into the city we decided to make the most of it and go for it. We ended up missing the 4:15 bus (You need to pay attention ALL the time at the bus stop cos unless you wave for the bus, they won't stop for you! oh well.) So had to wait for the 4:45 instead. The trip into Seoul took an hour and a half on the bus, and then another 10min on the subway to get to Yongsan (where we wanted to be). We met a really sweet lady on the bus who's invited us to come to her house for a home cooked ... read more

We got the air conditioned overnight train to Chaing Mai. Chris made friends with the locals and got pissed on about 5L of heinken! Clickety Clack Lak Lak was our waitress and MaiFriend was the carraige supervisor. We had to fight this herd of thai ladies who were part of a group of about 10 and only bought 6 tickets and wanted us to share our seat and give one to them! Crazy ladies. At Chaing Mai we stayed at the Family Tribal Trek guest house. We had our own bathroom and a fan...good times. Your own bathroom in Thailand is a good time....a REAL good time :) We spent most of our time walking around and getting lost. It was really hot and smokey up there. There had been heaps of fires and alot of ... read more

As we turned the corner, walked through the portcullis gate and took our first glimpse of the Taj Mahal, we were overwhelmed with the sense that we'd remember this day for a long time to come. It's such an iconic site that when we first booked our 'around the world' tickets with a homebound flight from Delhi, we could picture ourselves there, at the end of the year's adventures. We stood in the shade and thought back on the year - the exhaustion during the Inca Trail, the adrenaline rush during our skydive, the homesick feeling at Christmas time, the joy at seeing the sun rise over Ankor Wat, the serene beauty of reef diving in Thailand, the fear of poisonous animals in the jungle, contentment in New Zealand, the boredom of taking yet another train..bus..car..plane..ride, ... read more

Asia » Hong Kong » Lantau Island March 16th 2007

Next morning we had an early wake up call, after some repacking we were on our way back to Hong Kong airport, only a 10-minute drive away. We checked in at the Cathay pacific First class check in counters, and then went to ‘The Pier’ one of the 2 lounges Cathay Pacific offers. Here we had a great sit down breakfast in the restaurant, and then spent time catching up on Emails and just relaxing. The lounge was very quiet, and a little dark and gloomy for our liking, but very tasteful and luxurious nevertheless. All too soon it was time to board CX504, our 747-400 bound for Tokyo Narita airport. Once on board we settled into seats 2A and 4A, and were offered Champagne prior to take off. The cabin was quite full, but the ... read more

Asia » Singapore March 16th 2007

Last March 16, my friend Froila and I headed to Singapore. My other friend Nhuj from China followed us to Singapore the next day. Singapore is a very small country maybe just as big as Quezon City (one city of metro manila) with a population of only 4.8 million people making it very manageable. Singapore also had several ethnic groups of Indian, Malay and Chinese. What I love about this country: 1. Transportation system - Singapore has a very nice transport system. Taking the MRT is very convenient. It has a link to all places and shopping malls in Singapore without getting lost. Our EZ link card which we put a credit of $20 lasted in our almost five days stay just for taking the ride in MRT and the bus. This card can also be ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Sumatra March 16th 2007

Arriving in Sumatra, via Medan, we enjoyed a night in a posh hotel (well, for Indonesia anyway), and were off the next day to Bukit Lawang to see wild Orangutans in one of the National Parks. After a bus journey that felt like we were driving on the surface of the moon, inside a sauna on wheels, we arrived at the jungle and booked into a pleasant eco-lodge. We had decided to take a trek the following day, and soon hitched ourselves up with a guide; the incorrigible, self-titled 'Jungle Eddy'. Bukit Lawang, having recently been devastated by a flood (caused by a nearby broken dam), was amidst a process of reinvention. The locals, having recently received government housing for a newly located village, were beginning to set up shops and restaurants again. They were pleased ... read more
