I'm sorry, well maybe I'm not... that you haven't heard from me in quite some time. I had my reasons. I've been spending 10 days at a buddhist meditation retreat at Suan Mokkh in the south of thailand. It was very difficult, challenging and developing. Many of you may not know anything what's a retreat like, so i'll start from the beginning. This is an international retreat, set in beatiful environment, with some 70 people from allover the world. You have to be silent except from when problems occur, then to speak to the personell or the monks. You hold the buddhist precepts, sleep on a thin mat on concrete with a wodden pillow, go upp 4 am in morning, go to sleep 9.30 in the evening. Eat max two meals a day and only after ... read more

Did you think you had lost us? this is not meant to be an outright call to Hal's dad, but rather for those of you who understand, a description of our activities of late. for those of you who dont understand, well, we will explain sometime soon. Alas, we have been finding Nemo. And it turns out (we asked him) he didnt actually want to be found. He was happily enjoying himself in the warmth of the Andaman sea. He has made many new friends, and we are happy to report, is not considering swimming off the shelf anytime soon. while he misses his dad dearly, he couldnt bring himself to phone home and explain why his new domicile was a great improvement on the last. And as for Bruce, well, he's really quite small in ... read more

Patong Beach - Phuket 10th-15th Nov. 2005 I didn't think that I would be seeing my brother and his family quite so soon. I already said my goodbyes. Bruce, Cathy and the kids had a trip booked to Bali in November. For the second time now in 3 years they cancelled their trip because of bombings. They are clearly not meant to go to Bali. So they changed their travel destination to Phuket. It just so happened that I also would be in southern Thailand at a similar time. Holiday Inn For 5 days I was a very regular visitor to the Holiday Inn where Bruce & Cathy were staying. So much so that the hotel staff really thought I was staying there. I sometimes just left temporarily wearing one thing and came back half and ... read more

Home Again There is a line in The Beach where Leonardo De Caprio's character snaps at his friend and says "You've got to forget about Thailand". Obviously this is a problem for many people and in my endorsement of this sentiment, I arrived back in my South East Asia home: Ko Phi Phi two months after I had left it. I was already well over two months behind schedule and so had decided that a mere ten days on Paradise Island was going to make no odds. Journey to Phi Phi I know I am digressing on my Phi Phi tales but I do need to let you know about my journey back - getting there was no easy task at all -the whole journey involved the following, in chronological order: * A drive on SE ... read more

{backdating to pretend I'm keeping up on this} Ko Phi Phi is the quintessential island paradise. White sand beaches, swaying palms, beautiful limestone cliffs dropping off into waters so clear you can see 30 ft to the bottom, while dangling your legs off the side of a boat and cruising by islands straight out of "The Beach". It is not, however, a hidden paradise, but rather (one of) the most touristy places I've ever been. Sandwich and 'pancake' shops far outnumber thai restaurants, and it's definately impossible to "eat local" as I've been trying to do. Everything and everyone on the island revolves around the tourist trade, and it's more common to hear Dutch, German, French, English, or any other western language, however random, than Thai. It still is beautiful though, despite the scenery being marred ... read more

Hi everyone. Linda and I are now in Phuket, at a place called Chalong. Hostel very nice if a bit spartan. this is our third day here and it is absolutely bloody marvellous. weather in the mid nineties. food and drink is great and cheap. marvel of marvels we bumped into a old freind on Chalong beach the first day we were here. for those of you who might know him it was Paul and Di's son, Daniel. Spent yesterday at Karon beach which was so great we have already booked a room in a hotel for the whole of next week. Trust this finds every body well, Ken and Linda.... read more

Lester, Dave and Doc were tasty characters alright. Although quite easily reeled in, they were as slippery as they come and always prepared to put up a fight. Yep, the highlight of our travels to Hat Rai Ley was catching our dinner on what was a very successful fishing trip. I wasn't expecting much more than maybe a welly boot or a burst car tyre but I should've learned by this point that Thailand just doesn't disappoint and our haul of a monkfish, a barracuda and a red snapper was a catch to be proud of. Later that night, the restaurant took care of all the yucky bits and we feasted upon our dearly departed friends having prayed to God that they suffered a painless death during the Last Rites which I duly administered. We enjoyed ... read more

Firstly, sorry for not putting any entries into this blog since I've arrived. I had all the good intentions, but now I'm here, the last thing I want to do is sit in an internet cafe. The weather is beautiful and there is so much (or little) to do and it's just too lovely, so again, sorry! I will try to keep up-to-date. Anyway, I have been in Thailand for around three weeks now, but in this entry I will only really talk about the first two as I am now currently eslewhere from Ko Pha Ngan (never really sure how you spell it - it's different everywhere you look). I decided to go to Ko Pha Ngan as my first stop on the recommendation of Kate T who had been there previous year and loved ... read more

...or how are you? (to those of you who don't speak Thai!!). Thanks again for your happy (and often crazy) messages. Please keep them coming as they really do cheer me up whenever I'm feeling a little low. I was going to add an entry a few days ago but I wanted to wait until I had lots of photos before updating it. Unfortunately, after tinkering with my camera and being a bit girly, I accidentally managed to wipe all of the photos and video clips I had taken which means that everything prior to yesterday is gone. Boo Hoo!! So all I can show you are some photos of Koh Lanta, in Krabi and Kata Beach, Phuket which is where I am today. My third stop after leaving Cambodia was Patong in Phuket (aka ladyboy ... read more

Day 1: Got up early as we'd booked to go on a speed boat trip to Hong Island. The bus picked us up and took us to the harbour point and we jumped onto the boat (turned out to be a really nice speed boat) and introduced ourself to everyone else! Got friendly with a lovely father & Son-Nick and Peter-who were from Singapore! We made our way out to Hong Island stopping at some of the beautiful paradise beaches along the way to enjoy the sun and explore the sea life!!! We arrived at Hong Island ready for lunch and were joined by some huge monitor lizards that lived there...stayed well away though as they were looking pretty aggressive! For the rest of the afternoon we relaxed on the beautiful island and enjoy feeding the ... read more
