Seriously. The combination of terrible weather and the presence of Sabby was a recipe for a five day session. At one point, (during day 3 I think) we decided that it would be an idea to break up the drinking with a few games of ten-pin bowling. Little did we know at the time that the bowling alley would be home to the ladyboy show in aid of the King's birthday celebrations. So there was us clattering down the skittles on lane 11 while Chaweng's finest decked out in gear that wouldn't look out of place in the Paris Fashion Show were entertaining the masses as their Adam's Apples bounced up and down to Tony Bennett covers on lanes 1-10. The crowd thought it was great anyway... If you've read any of my mails before now, ... read more

Hi There It is two days after full moon. Been sleeping heaps. Full Moon was on the 16th and we got a taxi with 12 other people from our resort down to haad rin, the location for full moon. Got there about midnight and the place was packed with touros. Couldnt get down to the beach area so we when to a quite club for drinks till about 5am. By that stage the crowd had sufficiently cleared so we could get onto the beach. There's like 20 clubs right on the beach all pumping out all sorts of music, loved the cheesy house and progressive music myself but the others wanted more psy. We hung out with a german couple from our resort, Itza and Ricky. I could only remember her name by thinking of ... read more

The trip is winding down now just as the climate is changing here on Koh Samui. It started to rain this evening and likely will rain almost every day for the next month. We lucked out on the weather. The other odd thing, is after a week of not seeing any Americans, they now seem to be poping up all over the place. We even met two guys who graduated from MSU with Colin in 2003. The island is beginning to get a different crowd than those who were here earlier this week. I did a ton of shopping for friends and family yesterday. I'm doing a good job with bargaining. On most items, I offer 25% of their offered price and then will go up to about 50%. Some shops seem particularly generous, others ask ... read more

I'm feeling a lot better this afternoon. The hangover is gone and I've spent a good hour at the beach followed by a lunch of chicken with cashew, spicy Thai salad with beef, sweet & sour chicken, and basil beef. The dishes are smaller and much cheaper here allowing us to try a number of different things for lunch rather than one huge dish like in the USA. The travel agent refunded our entire cost of the unused Full Moon Party tickets and apologized over and over for the failure of the minibus/speedboat service. We found out that hundreds of people suffered the same fate we did. That would explain why there were still so many young people hanging out in the bars on Chaweng Beach with us last night. We bought our full day tours ... read more

Matt, after your e-mail, I was afraid your post would be too dirty to accept for the blog, but it looked tame enough. Opium is very big in northern Thailand's "Golden Triangle" but not down here in the south. The drug here is Yang-Ba and it often puts users in a zombie coma for three days or more where they wander the streets like stray dogs. Sounds like fun, but I would rather stay on the beach and get Thai massages. Also, I can't imagine you with a mustache. I can't picture how your hair would get dark enough for anyone to even notice it. Ok, now on to today's blog....... Yesterday was a lot of fun mixed with two big disappointments. First, Colin and I rented a sea kayak yesterday to take over to the ... read more

Despite November being the rainy monsoon month in Ko Samui, we awoke to another very sunny and beautiful morning on the island. Today is Loy Krathong, one of the most important holidays in the kingdom. This evening at dusk, Colin and I will travel to Big Buddha Beach at the northeast end of the island to watch as Thais and tourists launch krathongs into the ocean. Krathongs are small floating objects built of banana leaves, paper, or even bread and contain offerings, incense and always candles. The idea is to float away your difficulties in life and wish for great times ahead. I haven't seen krathongs for sale and I'm not artistic enough to build my own, so we will probably just watch. We went to bed early last night. We were both drained and needed ... read more

Doesn't look like yesterday's message got processed. So briefly. Last Sunday we went to a Thai temple. See photos - I hope! Monday we went to Pi Phi Islands - first indication of the Tsunami damage. But still some stunning scenery. See photos - I hope! We have now moved to Karon, which has a wonderful beach and quite a healthy night life as my headache this morning will testify... read more

note to readers: this blog contains details that may be inapproprite for loving family members! read at your own risk... but don't worry, we are still alive and well! after Koh Tao we took a ferry boat to another island called Ko Pha Ngan. we have been hearing stories about this place throughout our travels, but still we were so unprepared for how crazy it truly was. we met up with two of our friends from uc davis, and the four of us shared a cute little bungalow right by the beach. the hotel we stayed at, coral, threw parties in their restaurant overlooking the sunset every night. on one of these drunken nights, the dj asked us if we wanted to be ring girls in the thai boxing match he was announcing for. it was ... read more

There's no way to write about all we have experienced in the past day. Ko Samui is paradise on Earth; certainly the most beautiful place I have ever visited. Imagine the photos of a Caribbean beach and multiply that by 10. Our flight arrived safely and on time yesterday. The trip was very fast, lasting only about 40 minutes, yet it is certainly a whole world away from Bangkok. We came in over the islands from the north and as we got lower the mountains rose up to meet us. Ko Samui, the southern most and largest island is a set of mountains rising out of the Gulf of Siam covered 98% with Coconut Palm trees. The weather here is mercifully cooler than Bangkok (about 85F) thanks to the ocean breeze. However, it's still very humid. ... read more
