even after so much traveling to get here, it is impossible to be crabby in Krabi. what else can we say? beautiful white sand beaches for miles, and a cute strip of shops that line Ao-Nang beach. we miss angelo already, but just the girls can have a lot of fun as well! jess and rachel scored an amazing roof top hotel room. to get in, one had to crawl through a hinged window, and - wow - a tv AND mini fridge? but the best part had to be that when you crawled out another window/door it brought you right to a nice little porch with a private outdoor bathroom! we could literally go pee while looking out at the ocean, palms, and islands! since the ceiling was sloped from the floor to about 5'4" ... read more

Ban Lut is a newly constructed housing camp for displaced victims of the tsunami. After doing some other tasks to get ready for the team to arrive to construct the playground at the Ban Nok Na school, I was called by the director of the Ban Muang refugee camp and asked if I would help them by driving a few people to the local market to pick up some supplies for the new daycare center being organized at the Ban Lut village camp. Rotjana, the director of the camp, has started another daycare center in a one-room building where younger children can play and learn during the day while their parents are working and their siblings are in nearby schools. The young girl (20 years old, actually) shown in the close-up photo was a bit of ... read more

Oh I do like to be beside the seaside... Flying from Singapore, none of this overland backpacking stuff, we touch down in Phuket and immediately get a taxi to the beach (Hat Kamala) very nice. Day trip to Ko Phi Phi - although weather a bit indifferent. Island still with lots of rebuilding following the Tsunami. Back on Phuket we went to Phuket Fantasea - with dancing elephants, performing cows, goats, a Tiger, chickens and formation flying doves. At one point 17 elephants on stage - most entertaining. ... read more

Most of Thailand has three seasons. The hot season is in America's spring months. Then the rainy season lasts until the end of October or early November. Finally, from mid-November until March, there is the cool season -although cool means 85F. Ko Samui and the islands in the Gulf of Siam have two seasons. The cool season last from our late summer until early spring and the hot season the rest of the year. The only truly rainy period is the month of November -something we didn't know before we planned this trip. As I've said before, we've been very lucky with the weather on our trip. We had sun all week in Ko Samui until yesterday afternoon. Today, however the sky is great and we've had tremendous downpours. No one is at the beach and ... read more

We spent a quiet final day in Thailand. I got my hair cut and an old-fashioned shave in the morning. Then we finished shopping. The hard rain got worse through the day, but has cleared up now in the evening. We went swimming during one of the breaks in the rain, but otherwise stayed in our hotel room packing and reading. Tonight, we went for a final Thai massage -best one yet. Then we went out for a very fancy dinner that was surprisingly poor for the money and have terrible service, especially for Thailand. If you ever visit Ko Samui, avoid Baan Thai restaurant in central Chawang. Hopefully, I can check in from Seoul. If not, I'll post again from East Lansing in 1 1/2 days with my final notes on Thailand and a link ... read more

Dear all, Right from Kuala Lumpar we headed over to the Cameron Highlands. This is a place where the British decided they would grow a large amount of Tea and sell all over the world. Its still going strong now and is a very nice brew. While there we did some challenging walks, one in which Anna found particurarly challenging but i dragged her up the mountain in the end without too much fuss (only because she had run out of breath to shout at me!) Next to the Pehrentian Islands in Malayasia which were awesome. We stayed on a tiny island surrounded by monkeys, large lizards, sharks and all sorts. But there is only so long you can spend on a small island so we arranged a boat to take us to the mainland - ... read more

For the past week, I've been volunteering at the Tsunami Volunteer Center in southern Thailand. So far it has been an amazing experience and I'm really enjoying myself. The Center (TVC) is based in the coastal town of Khao Lak, which was one of the areas hardest hit by the tsunami. TVC was created shortly after the disaster to help people document lost loved ones and to provide temporary housing and supplies for victims. In the months since the tsunami, the mission has shifted to focus upon construction of new homes and job re-training for residents who have lost their income sources. There are currently 141 volunteers from 20 different countries constructing homes at four different sites, teaching English to kids at local schools, and building boats for fishermen who lost theirs during the tsunami. Hello Everyone! Well at present I am sunning it up in Thailand but I have quite busy since my last entry, with many exciting little stories to share! So sit back, maybe go make a drink and enjoy our mini adventure from Singapore to where we are now, Koh Samui, which is an island off the coast of Thailand! Singapore We touched down in Singapore on the 8th of November and got our first real taste of backpacing! So far we had been living in the lap of luxury in Tom's Hong Kong apartment and now we were very much having to do things for ourselves! Once there we found our hostel and wasted no time in exploring the city, first stop, shops! They had some really cool clothes shops, though be warned as the staff ... read more

After Kuala Lumpur, we headed to Phuket (Thailand) to meet two of my friends from Toronto, Deb and Susan. We spent two days catching up on a beach in an area of Phuket that was hit quite hard by the tsunami last year and is still in the midst of reconstruction. Following a little catch up time we headed east to Koh Phangan: the site of the famous (infamous) Full Moon Party. Tara decided that heading up north was more her style and so she carried on up to Bangkok. Koh Phangan is a cute little jungle island of 168 km2. It has beautiful beaches with clear, warm water. Haad Rin is the beach where the Full Moon Party is held and between 8000 -15 000 tourists are drawn to the event. The next few days ... read more
