We now find ourselves in Karon after a pretty eventful two days. Sunday saw the first heavy rain that we have encountered; this as we were visiting a nearby temple- it was Sunday after all! The temple(s) were awesome - see photographs. In seeking shelter from the storm we went into one open-air building only to discover that it was the place where people were cremated and that their was a cremation due within minutes. Yes, we got very wet! Yesterday was our last day in Chalong and we went on a visit to Phi Phi Islands. This was the first time since we arrived that we became aware of the effects of the Tsunami on Thialand in general, but on these islands in particular. Shan't dwell on the details, suffice to say that it was ... read more

Koh Tao (15th-20th Nov. 2005) After leaving Phuket I flew across to the eastern side of southern Thailand to Ko Samui. Samui airport was just like a little resort next to a single runway. Little open trams on wheels transporting you from the plane and open thatched buildings, a bar and a post office. I then got a catamaran across to Koh Tao island stopping on the way to let a lot of tourists off for the Full Moon Party at Ko Pha-Ngan island on the 16th. Take note - the water was like glass on the way to Koh Tao, not a single ripple on the water! Another story to follow! Coral Grand Resort Bern & Liz did a sensational job finding this one!(although they told me it just happened by accident). Coral Grand Resort ... read more

So much to do on this island and so little time. After I last wrote, Colin and I left for our island safari. It was fun, but not worth the $30 cost, either here or in America. I got some good photos out of it though. First we saw an elephant show and did elephant trekking that I'm sorry to say probably wasn't PETA approved. The elephants seem like very intelligent animals, probably more so than their handlers. Then we went to see a monkey show which was a bit more interesting. From their we took a trip to one of the best waterfalls on the island and afterwards did a bit of canoeing. Following the safari we had a great lunch at a Thai place called "Will Wait" and laid out on the beach. Later ... read more

Those of you who know me best will be aware that I was always more of a guitar sing-song in someone's gaff with a few bevvies and a few mates type of guy and not one to go for the drug-induced euphoria of rave parties. But as any one of the hundreds of thousands of travellers who have made the pilgrimmage to Ko Phan Ngang since 1995 would tell you, Full Moon is no ordinary rave party. And despite my normal aversions to over-hyped DJs, house, dance and trance, I could only soup up the spectacle as I was, literally, party to this Wonder of the Backpackers' World. To get the full benefit of this mail, I'd suggest looking for the most funked up CD in your collection and turn up the sound full blast. The ... read more

Early morning speed boat to Koh Tao (via Koh Phangan). Great ride out. Weather perfect - sunny and a light breeze to cool us down. 1.5 hrs. We booked into Ko Tao Resort, situated on Chalok Baan beach, for 7 nights - mainly for Spence to get over his bird flu!!!!. Really lovley bay. Just a few bars and resturants. Longtail boats in the bay. Sunsets and swimming in the sea and pool (which was a horizon style so lovely). Quite a few friendly dogs and mad cats. Had regular escort back to bungalow and guard dogs through the night (Thai dogs have fondness for sesame seed crackers it seems). 3 days of beautiful sunshine, 3 days of gradually heavier and heavier rain which swashed our hopes of hiring a bike or snorkelling. Sairee beach not ... read more

After leaving our very homely little bungalows in Krabi we headed over to the east coast to the island of Ko Samui. It was yet another one of Thailands unforgettable bus journeys which took about 5hrs..no air-con and probably about 3 times as many people as it should hold, on it..so you can just imagine how hot we were! We now realise that no matter how much more money you pay for luxury they all the same rusty tim cans on wheels!! After that we got thrown off into a travel agents in some town in the middle of nowhere where we waited to or more hours until another bus came and took us to the ferry. Finally we did arrive at our little place and it was lovely so was definitly worth the trek! It ... read more

Flew from Bangkok to Koh Samui with Bangkok Airlines - took around 50 mins Spent 2 nights in Koh Samui. Stayed at Seascape Beach Resort on Chaweng beach. Not great but reasonably cheap! Chaweng Beach full of Thais constantly trying to sell/pick you up in cabs. Sat and watched England v Argentina in an Irish bar - very sad but had to be done! D only caught on half way through entire bar supporting Argentina after half cheering an England near miss. We left shortly after for some food.... Spen watched replay of match later that night! Great result!!! Beach was nice but wanted something less commercial and less 'brit abroad'. Raza Buri for drinks and a light meal - very nice. Rooms v expensive so no chance of us staying there! Spen develops man flu ... read more

Dear All So mum's 3 week holiday is now over and she's flown back to England. We had a whale of a time and now she's deserted me to travel solo for the next year. OH MY GOD! I will admit I am finding it quite daunting but off to Phuket (by air, can't quite get my head round 14 hours on a train yet when it only takes an hour by air) Whoops - budget's broken already. I haven't told you about our day in Chiang Mai last week - We had a day at an elephant sanctuary and it will definately take some beating - we watched the elephants have a bath in the river, they entertained us by showing their skills (which included logging, basketball, playing musical instruments - well, banging a tamborine! ... read more

Am writing this from a cafe about 15 minutes from our hostel. after this we are catching a bus to Kata beach. Spent yesterday in Phuket City where we went on a guided tour (50p each!) which included a trip to a hilltop view point from which some of these photos were taken.
