Wednesday night I hit Phi Phi town again with a bunch of fellow backpackers. The highlight of the evening was that the owner of the "Rolling Stoned" bar allowed me to DJ from my MP3 player while I was there. Thursday I completed 2 more SCUBA dives at Bida Nai, near Phi Phi Ley island. They were great, save for 2 crappy sets of dive partners- the first was an older out of shape man who sucked his air down faster than anyone I've ever seen... second an Israeli couple who seemed to like to hold hands more than swim in any general directions... so I kinda just wandered around on the ocean floor by myself. I was all SCUBA'd out (and broke)... so that'd be my last dives of the trip :( I spent my ... read more

Since my last blog I completed my Advanced Open Water SCUBA course after 3 more dives... each better than the next. Night Dive: 1 hour after sunset. Was pitch black out. 6 of us descended to 60 feet, torches in hand. At first it was totally nuts, but I quickly got accustomed to using the torch. The coolest part was when we all turned off our lights and waved our hands in the water causing the plankton to autoflouresce green! Wreck Dive: This was like something straight outta a Cousteau episode from my youth. We followed this buoyed line down... not seeing anything.. all of a sudden there was this HUGE ship lying 100 on the sea floor. We went through the engine room, captains quarters and bathroom swimming through school after school of fish Anemone ... read more

We got the ferry onto Koh Phi Phi, which were the set of islands used for the film The Beach. After a thankfully calm trip on a bit of a dodgy looking ferry we arrived on the main island Phi Phi Don. We got an air-con room for over twice the price we paind on Phuket but it was worth it. Asides from the Tsunami damage which is still very apparent on the north side of the town, you can see why people come here and don't want to leave. It's still a lovely island but only backpackers seemed to have returned. We got to go over to the other island Koh Phi Phi Leah and do some snorkelling and visit some of the crab eating macaques that live on Phi Phi Don but they seem ... read more

Last night I fell asleep to the sound of the frogs in the nearby woods, and woke to roosters and the sounds of thai children playing. I'm really enjoying the location and simplicity of where I am right now- For $6.25 I get my modest 12 foot square room with oscillating fan, queen size bed, multitasking bathroom (shower + toilet) and 2 windows with screen. No ants or mozzies (mosquitos) yet, hot water or A/C. The walls are made of stained and thatched bamboo, and thin enough for me to hear the guy coughing next door. Plain, simple and clean. Makes you appreciate everything we have in the States, or helps me to understand all the materialistic nonsense we unnecessarily surround our lives with. No TV, no cell phone, no car... but yes of course I ... read more

Finally arrived on Phi Phi island (Ko Phi Phi) on Friday afternoon. There are actually two islands, one that i'm on Phi Phi Don- and the other Phi Phi Ley which is uninhabited because of its sheer rock cliffs. I should be able to get over there tomorrow. Phi Phi Don (where i'm blogging from now) was hit quite hard by the tsunami. The scene is quite relaxed here, and it seems there just aren't very many people visiting. I spend the first night enjoying dinner on a terrace overlooking the main beach area. I found an air-conditioned bungalow about 100 feet from the water for a couple days. And i've been relaxing to the max- waking late, enjoying an evening beer or two and just taking it all in. Yesterday as the tide went out ... read more

On my quest to find Nemo I signed up for the Scuba lessons that were offered by our hotel. Prices were pretty standard throughout the island, and it worked out to be about $300 to do a 4 day open water course. There was theory with some American drongo video's that they had spiced up with attempts at humour such as splicing in the frame: 'fact: divers have more fun than regular people'. There were only three of us trying to find Nemo, Me, Jessica and Constanze (off my tour). Jessica was from Amsterdam, and came as a bit of a shock for little old NZer me. She was loud crass, and extremely funny. She introduced me to the concept of "Lachen voor weinig" (includes a lot of hoicking that you can't pick up from the ... read more

What a pleasure it was to cover so much territory in just a few hours! I caught my first flight in Asia from Luang Prabang to Phuket and although I had a few arguments with immigration, I had made it back to the land of Thailand. Whilst on the minibus into town I met a couple of girls that were also avoiding the tourist trap of pre-arranged hotels. It's so annoying when bus drivers/companies do this. I understand that everybody needs to make a business of sorts, but I still have a bit of a brain and would like to do things for myself thank you very much! Unfortunetly, I wasn't really organized enough to have a chosen hotel, I just didn't want the tour companies'. Luckily, Tanya and Helen from England didn't seem to mind ... read more

Yesterday I took it easy, and why not? I'm on vacation- right? I woke late and blogged, took a nap and vegged. In the evening I hit the market again and broke my fast with a home cooked meal prepared here in the internet cafe: Panang Chicken (red curry and cocunut, WICKED spicy), Tom Yom Soup (Chicken and fish broth with lemongrass and some heat), and fried Thai vegetables. I got a mini cooking lesson as I watched them prepare it, and used my handyman skills to help them to fix a fan that had fallen off the wall. I also got to try some Boppy? (friend cococut pancakes). Dessert was this crazy dish- vegetables (corn, kidney beans, sweet potatoes) cooked in coconut milk until thick. Later that evening I took a car out to Patong ... read more

Sorry for the sporadic, and increasingly half-hearted, nature of these blogs. Important news: from October 20 - November 5 I shall be in Europe. First I'll be taking leave from October 20 - 30, visiting Liege, Belgium and London. Then I'll be on a work trip, visiting counter-trafficking organisations in Kiev, Ukraine and Rome, from the 31s to November 5th. If your path happens to cross mine, send me an email :). More importantly, please let me know where the best places to eat in Rome are! And if anyone knows of decent, clean, safe and not too expensive accommodation in London, please let me know too. Then I'm back in Bangers for a couple of weeks, before going to Australia in November, again for work. I shall be in Sydney from the 19th to 23rd ... read more

Hello everyone, We arrived in Satun just over the Thai border and got a major shock! There was a festival on in the town called the Vegetarian Festival. It's a buddhist festival that involves acts of self mutilation!!! One minute we were strolling down the road with our backpacks trying to find out how to get to Krabi, the next we were seeing a parade of men with metal skewrs pierced through their faces and pretty much every part of their body, others with machatties, saws and axes slicing their faces and even lips (giving themselves a chelsea smie!). It was totally surreal, blood everywhere, we were thinking what have we left ourselves in for!!! We knew nothing about this festival before arriving there but we've read up a little bit about it since and discovered ... read more
