Flying from Cebu city to Caticlan airport, we wondered what Boracay would be like. Listening to other travellers had made us a little weary about it being built up and full of tourists, despite its beauty. Sounded like a place we may like to avoid, but intrigue got the better of us, we simply had to find out for ourselves. Arriving in Caticlan (smallest airport I've ever visited!) we were greeted by tourist guide, who was really genuinely helpful. We boarded a typical Philippine boat which took us across to Boracay. Arriving we jumped into a motorcycle side car, and zoomed to our hotel which the guide recommended. It was in our budget and it had a pool! Not believing our luck, it all seemed quite unreal. Where's the catch? We gave the guide a well ... read more

Hong Kong.

PHILIPPINES - OCTOBER 20-25 Three friends, my cousin Katy, and myself went to Philippines for our October Break. We arrived in Manilla, the capital city, after a 3 hour flight from Bangkok on Saturday afternoon. A family friend of Allyson’s (Dolly) picked us up at the airport in her van and drove us to our hotel. Manilla is a busy place, with loads of cars/motos/vans/trucks/ buses/song-taows/tricycles/etc. You name it, it’s there. People came up to our van selling cigarettes, food, dishcloths, anything. There were kids playing on the street corners and dancing and people walking around - it was nice to see. I imagine it was quite an impoverished area, though everyone was super happy. That evening we went to a comedy club - with drag queens and a lot of singing. It was a new ... read more

Hello All What a busy time we have had during the last few weeks all the way from Langkawi Island in Malaysia to another beautiful island in the Philippines called Boracay Island. We had such a lovely time in Langkawi, our two weeks there just flew. On our last night in Langkawi we were invited to the opening of Langkawis new and stylish restaurant Putumayo. We had a great night - and really enjoyed all the FREE food and drinks. Thanks Paul and Rebecca for you hospitality and best wishes for a successful future. Next day a taxi to Kuah Jetty and a 50MYR - AUD$17 boat trip to Penang. Rob resisted taking the sea sickness tablets and only just made the 2.5 hour boat trip without throwing up everywhere. Looking rather green Rob piled the ... read more

It's Sunday, October 21st, and I've returned to Thailand. I wanted to give a little update on my last few days in the Philippines, and the latest news since my return to Bangkok. Ok, the Philippines. Thankfully, the good weather held in Boracay until my departure on Tuesday, October 16. I really enjoyed my time on the island. I connected with a group of Germans (4 university students) when I returned to Dave’s Straw Hat Inn for my last 3 days on Boracay. They were on vacation from their internship in Malaysia, and also staying at Dave’s Straw Hat. Rolf, Jens, Ina, and Tobin were an interesting bunch. Tobin was the guy who regularly disappeared late at night, and showed up the next morning (or afternoon). Where he went will remain a mystery. I spent most ... read more

It’s Saturday, October 13, and time for a little update from paradise. The weather has been incredible this last week. So what did I do? I decided to stay on the beautiful island of Boracay for the rest of my vacation in the Philippines. It's hard to beat this. I’ve got a couple more days before I fly to Manila, and then it’s back home to Bangkok. Island life for me has mostly consisted of relaxing on the beach, reading, and eating. However, I've done a few other things. In my last update, I mentioned a boat/snorkeling trip around the island. The boat/snorkeling trip was offered by Allan B Fun Tours. On my particular trip, I believe we had 24 customers plus 4 staff. It consisted of a few snorkel stops, a simple lunch, and a ... read more

The first thing we noticed about Manila was the guns. Outside the airport a security man guarded a cabinet where everyone had to leave their guns before entering the airport. Police and security men all carry guns. The next thing we noticed was the God mobile, a long, silver jeep with benches facing each other in the back and purple disco lights flashing and the words, God is Good, emblazoned across the front above the windscreen. They’re called jeepneys and we came across many of them, they operate a bus service all over the place for a cheap price but they don’t all have the same decorations. You never know what you might get. We took a normal taxi cab to Pension Natividad on M H del Pilar in the Malate area which had been recommended ... read more

The weather on Boracay has taken a dramatic turn. The storms passed, and the rain and high winds have been replaced by calm seas and sunny skies. Let's hope the good weather holds! Tomorrow I head out for a boat trip around the island with snorkeling gear and lunch included (all for under $15). Love it! I'll let the pictures and captions cover these last two days... Look! There goes Dave ... read more

The beach has always been a special place for me. From my early years of building sand castles, boogie boarding, and digging up sand crabs on the beaches of Orange County (So Cal, USA) to more recent years of playing volleyball or relaxing on beaches from all over Southern California to the Caribbean to Thailand. I've seen quite a few beaches in my life. Yesterday I arrived at the most popular beach in the Philippines, "White Beach" on the island of Boracay. This beach is often included in top 10 lists of the best beaches in the world. Unfortunately, my first view of it was in the rain. It is the rainy season in the Philippines, and I have experienced plenty of it in my 5 days in this country. Still, I can see the appeal ... read more
