The last two weeks of our year long trip was spent in Costa Rica. It was in the hope that the sun would shine and gives us some super tans to go home with. Unfortunately it was the rainy season so we only managed 2 hours of sunbathing in the morning at the most, before the clouds came. We stayed in some lovely hotels and hostels with huge rooms and swimming pools. Very comfortable! We travelled to a few locations including a tree plantation where we went horse riding. I was extremely nervous to begin with, but soon relaxed, as it was far less terrifying than riding an elephant! (I'm sure you've read my Laos blog!). We thoroughly enjoyed our riding, which began with a river crossing! Home on Wednesday 30th August , but we're off ... read more
Our Amazing Amazon Adventures! We had to fly from Lima to Iquitos as Iquitos is the Worlds Largest city that can’t be reached by road. However, on arrival we were so surprised at the traffic in the town. Most of the vehicles were 3 wheeler motorcycle taxis, making an astonishingly loud noise and pollution. The vegetation and climate reminded us of the Philippines; it was so very hot and tropical here, a complete contrast to Lima! Our stay in the Amazon was an hour and a half away by car from Iquitos and another hour on a wooden boat. Only us, the tour guide, the boat driver and a few food reserves, we motored down river. It was a relaxing journey, absorbing the landscape of muddy banks and luscious tropical vegetation. We were excited to be ... read more
Celebrations in Cusco Cusco is the continent's oldest, continuously inhabited city and was the home of the Incas for two centuries before the Spanish built their first capital here. For us this made it a fascinating city to spend some time in. I liked the cobbled streets and the main square with large colonial buildings. Cusco is 3400m above sea level, and we were fortunate with the sunny blue skies during our visit. On our first day we ventured into the main square and found the city jam packed full of people. A carnival was in full swing, people were in their traditional dress for the areas they’d traveled from. Children danced their way around the square non-stop until they reached the end. For a few days Cusco was transformed into a party city, a different ... read more
Our trip from Puno to Lake Titicaca with the islands of Uros and Amantani. Lake Titicaca - the highest navigable lake in the world. You will notice from the photographs Uros Islands were floating reed islands and Amantani Island was where we had our home stay. Uros Islands Here people live on floating islands handmade from totora, a type of reed. Everything is made from totora; houses, seats, shelters and even boats. The lower root part of the totora is edible and is used in their cooking. Layers of totora are placed on the floor, which is quite spongy to walk on. Once a month a new layer is put down to replace the lower decaying layers. Every 10 years a new island is made, to replace the one being lived on. The totora roots are ... read more
Arequipa - know as the White city due to the vast amounts of white volcanic rock used as a building material. Arequipa astonished us with its quaintness, of cobbles streets and beautiful architecture of archways around the main square. Ambling about the central plaza, it buzzed with locals socializing with their friends, it was so busy. Along the streets we dipped into a few tourist shops selling numerous items claiming to be made of alpaca wool. It was a little colder here so we hunted out hat and gloves for the cooler evenings. We had an interesting city tour of Arequipa. It was a perfect blue sunny day, which I remarked on, to be told it was like that everyday of the year!! On our tour we visited the Santa Catalina Convent, were driven to a ... read more
The Nazca Lines, the cemetery of Chauchilla and the Cantallo Aqueducts Our flight over the Nazca Lines The plane was super tiny, only a 4 seater, including the pilot. Nervously we sat waiting for airport control to allow us to take off, Then we raced down the runway and gently lifted into the air, oh my goodness the view around us and below was extraordinary. The dry landscape, crops of mountains and evidence of past rivers flowing was a superb sight. The Unesco World Heritage Site of 500sqkm of rock-strewn plain, Nazca lines, 800 of them, 300 geometric figures and 70 animal and plant drawings we were floating above. These lines were made from the removal of rocks, exposing the lighter soil below it. Due to the climate and weather conditions very little erosion occurs. ... read more

Our main aim of this journey Not quite sure how to describe our travels across Agrentina. It is a huge country, providing extremly comfortable tourist buses to place to place. We stuck to the north, gradually travelling from Mendoza to Iguazu Falls, down to Buenos Aires. Unfortunately we didn't had enough time to discover the south, dramatic cold scenery. So what did we do in Argentina Mendoza was the first town we stayed in, in Argentina. Travelling through the snow capped Andes Mountains from Chile was an exciting journey. The boarder crossing was a little time consuming as well as a little cold. But arriving in Mendoza we quickly settled in, we had booked ourselves onto a Wine tour which was great fun! I now have a strong liking for Malbec Wine, so tasty! Our main ... read more
Argentina’s Iguazu Falls - One of the Best Waterfalls in the World. Iguazu Falls, should be on everyones travelling agenda if in the area! Simply fantastic sights We spent 2 days in this great National Park. Our first superb sight was at the Garganta del Diablo. Never had I ever seen, such a breath taking waterfall. The colossal volume of water cascading down, producing deafening sound and dampening us with its spray, we stared in amazement. Several photos later we hoped we’d captured this wondrous experience. The walking circuit in the park led us to numerous other areas of waterfalls, top views and lower views, some splashily close. Rainbows formed from their spray made this place feel quite magical. We strolled from one mesmerizing view to another, along the tropical forest pathways, wondering what was ... read more
