Vietnam on the Real Cheap! Hi everyone, we are off again on another trip around Asia. This time the exchange rate is in our favour – in Vietnam we are getting 22,000 dong to the AUD. When we first started coming to Vietnam in 2003 we were getting 11,000 dong to the AUD! Everything is now so incredibly cheap now . A special hello to Tebby and Brian in Mexico, and Robyn and Gene who should be in Thailand by now. Sorry we have been so remote in the last couple of months but we have run into very serious trouble with what is left of our investments – we now have a rogue fund manager who is shredding us and the regulators will do nothing about it, and after 2 years in the Federal Court ... read more

It just kept raining for the remainder of our time in Sihanoukville - well it is the monsoon season! Still we managed to swim most days (30C and wet) and fill our time eating cheap food and drinking even cheaper beer and Bailey’s ($13/Ltr). Donna also picked up some very cheap Revlon cosmetics in the market but not much else. The only notable event in the last week was we both contracted the dreaded vomiting and diarrhea virus which lasted a couple of days each in succession - first Rob then Donna went running to the loo calling out for “H-e-r-b”. It’s strange because in all our recent travels we have not had any tummy problems thanks to Typhoid shots before travel. As the rainy days lingered on we noticed something strange about the karaoke restaurant ... read more

To add insult to injury after a long all day bus trip and excruciating border crossing into Vietnam we were severely ripped off by a taxi driver on our late arrival into Hanoi. Amid the confusion of securing our bags from the clutches of a marauding throng of thieving taxi drivers and accommodation touts at the bus company’s drop off point some distance from the old quarter of Hanoi. We reluctantly decided to go with one driver who had a taxi that was large enough to accommodate our baggage - a fatal mistake! Taxi flag fall in Hanoi is between 8 - 10,000 dong depending on the taxi company and type of vehicle. Bags loaded, and Donna in the back seat Robert settled in to the minimal space in the front seat. A quick glance at ... read more

On our last day in Shangri La we awoke to the sound of Buddhist monks chanting - om ra hari om… om ra hari om … - with temple bells and horns breaking the morning serenity. From our hostel room window we could see the huge automated prayer wheel in the hillside temple complex spinning faster than usual as it reflected the early morning sun. As it turned out, this was a special day (although no one could enlighten us about why it was special) with a whole range of activities in the town square. Many local people were dressed in traditional Tibetan costume, there was lots of music and dancing, local politicians handed out awards and gave speeches promising all sorts of benefits from the Middle Kingdom government. By lunch time the event had finished; ... read more

One thing we forgot to mention about our arrival in Guangzhou was the large illuminated notice board at the immigration entry which was displaying two pages of vital information for visitors - a detailed explanation about the emergence of the BLACK PLAGUE in town. The board contained a very detailed history of the PLAGUE in Europe and the necessary information on recognizing the symptoms and what to do for medical treatment. The importance of this information hit us when we discovered large rat traps strategically placed along the hallway near our room at the hostel (didn't see and captured rats though). We left Sanya on a drizzling Sunday morning, caught a taxi right in front of the hotel for 50RMB ($8.50 yes the local Sanya rip-off price - “no the meter does not work!!”) and headed ... read more

A cautious waitress in a Xiajia Lu (Lu = street) Guangzhou walking street restaurant making sure our menu selection was culturally appropriate. Left the Harbour Hotel early on Saturday 29 May, walked to Mong Kok MRT then transferred to Kowloon Tong MRT for Hung Hom, the main departure point for trains to mainland China. After a delicious $38HK cappucino at the station we exited Hong Kong immigration - yes the security took Rob to pieces AGAIN!!! (I must look like a drug addict) The ticket from Hung Hom to Guangzhou East rail station was $190HK ($30) for the 2 hour trip. This is a fast train which reached 200Km/hr on the main stretches. Entry to China immigration was smooth at Guangzhou station (priority line of course) - our business travel cards gave us a 60 day ... read more

We are running behind with the blog so we will do a couple of updates covering the last few very busy weeks. On our last day in Bangkok we were able to get into the centre of the city with the military blockade lifted in most areas. We started off at MBK the amazing discount shopping centre, with a wonton soup and Singha beer lunch (140Bt $4.60). Walking up to Siam and Central World shopping centres revealed just how much damage had been done - see the pics. Zen is completely gutted and we passed 6 other centres in the central shopping district which had been torched by the departing Red Shirt protesters. Much of the mess left by the protesters had already been cleaned but the extent of the damage was staggering. On our last ... read more

Just a quick blog to finish off on Bangkok before we head off to Hong Kong. You probably know by now that the Red Shirt protests ended in violence. The army moved in over 2 days declaring the centre of the city a “LIVE FIRE ZONE”, and shooting several armed and unarmed people. On Wednesday (19 May) the protest leaders surrendered and most of the protesters left the protest site. A small group of core protesters continued to fight the army - they torched the Siam Paragon and Zen shopping centres, the Thai Stock Exchange and several other buildings before disappearing through the army cordon. Strife broke out in several other Thai cities including Chang Mai and Ubon Ratchatani so the Government imposed a curfew for 3 days - no one was allowed on the streets ... read more

After the much publicised Red Shirts acceptance of the Government’s commitment to dissolve the Thai Parliament and call elections in November, we thought that all would be quiet in Bangkok - well that’s not how things have turned out. As we write this blog the 3pm deadline for the demonstrators to cease has arrived - we are waiting to see what happens now with troops poised to move in on the demonstrators. More on this later. We had another great flight with AirAsia from Phuket to Bangkok - $40 each just the average price. We ended up getting a “taxi” to the airport rather than the bus from the bus depot (85Bt) - it was b bit of a walk from the hotel and we were just lazy. At the airport we used the AA automatic ... read more

Hello Everyone Well after a break of a couple of years we are back on the road again - this trip around SE Asia and China again (yes it’s cheap!) especially the AirAsia flights and Tune Hotels accommodation. We had a comfortable flight to Kuala Lumpur with Air Asia X in their new A330 Airbus. We had heard some mixed reports about them but we had no complaints. Plenty of leg room, we left on time and actually arrived half an hour early. The meal (smoked chicken and veggies) was saved by the fantastic curry sauce and we passed on the $5AUD beers. Eight and a half hours went fairly quickly even though no one offered us an entertainment unit at $11AUD - we had our own! Well for a total cost including baggage charges, taxes ... read more
